Hello, Patrick :)
I just want to say that (Of Course) I still LOVE the Chaos Walking Trilogy. And I still read it all the time, even though I've read the books so many times that I've lost count, I still read them and still find myself excited to see what happens next.
And, in fact, I get confused when I read other books. When something happens I'm like, "Why don't they just read his Noise?" Then I figure out what book I'm reading, then I'm like, "Oh...duh."
I keep thinking that everybody, in the books I read, has Noise. Ha! I've read you books too many times! But I'll keep reading them, of course I will.
Your books are the types that, no matter how many times you read them, they never get old.
A very rare thing. For me, anyways.
And, I am VERY excited to read A Monster Calls, I can't wait to get it!! :D
You are my favorite Author ever.
Sincerely, Skylar P.
:)
hi:)
been a while since I last wrote and since then I've been doing some thinking..
I know you're probably sick of questions about the CW films, but I was just wondering if it was possible that they would be made into animations?
I've always been really scared of books being made into films as they rarely seem to give justice to the books and often end up disappointing, but now I'm starting to accept that films don't have to be exact replicas of books in picture form but can be their own adaptation..
So, I'm really excited for the films even it is quite a long way away as I would love to see how the film maker people present the different features that are so amazing/perfect in the books and yeah:)
Also, do you have any tips on writing short stories?
Naomi :)
Please don't let them ruin the film.Chaos walking is awesome and I don't want them to change any of it.
Patrick, a couple of colleagues and I came to the talk at Foyles last night, and we talked to you about your book being featured in our local area book awards. You also kindly signed some books for us to use as prizes. If you would like to see the website for the awards, where I have posted about our visit, please see here: http://maba.edublogs.org Your book is in the 7-9 category, and our books are selected with a theme in mind, rather than recently published. To reflect the spirit of the Olympics, our theme this year is 'Winning Through' - which is what we feel Conor epitomises. The awards have just been launched this year, so there aren't many pupil comments left yet, but the enthusiasm for your book is very high so I expect lots of good reviews on the site. There is also one good animoto film in response to your book, and I am expecting more to be produced. Thank you - Caroline Roche, School Librarian at Holmesdale Technology College, Kent.
Patrick, I interviewed you a year or so ago for Publishers Weekly. I've just finished A Monster Calls and, to echo some of the other comments above, it's wonderful, it's devastating, and it made me cry. I'm sorry that Siobhan Dowd didn't live to write this book herself-she was an enormously talented woman-but what a blessing that the publishers found someone who was up to the task of creating something that she would have been proud of. Thanks for this gift.
dear patrick.
i just want to thank you for writing the chaos walking trilogy!. i have read all the books about 5 times and can honestly say that they are the best books i hav ever read! i cudnt believe when i heard that they were becoming movies! i absolutly love viola eade and really relate to her character. she is such a strong independent woman and i would giv anything in the world to have a shot at playing her in the movie. or even just having the chance to audition! so please consider holding auditions in Ireland!! we hav soooo much talent and im sure you wud find the perfect viola here! :)
thank you so much for writing the three best books in the world. jane xx
I also think you should write Todd's mum's book in full
I urge you to write the equivalent to Tolkien's Silmarillion for your chaos walking trilogy. It is brilliant, and i would like to read more about the planet and 'creachers' right off to read The New World...
I have just finished monsters of men and the ending is brilliant. Some books you read and the ending is disappointing, but i thought the way u spread your writing round the page in monsters of men @ the end in a kind of dreary fashion, similar to Todd's mind after the incident with 1017 was incredibly unique. I cant wait to read the new world.
I think the knife of never letting go was the best book ever and i finished the trilogy in about 3 weeks. it would have been faster but my mum insists my light is out by 10pm.
please dont make the knife of never letting go a movie u may have remembered i sent u a letter in my crazy stages after finishing the series and if they do make a movie it will e torture to me please dont let them do it
Mr. Patrick Ness,
Hello! My three best friends and I all read your book, A Monster Calls, and we all loved it so much. We all just broke down and cried. Our eighth grade reading and language arts teacher, Mrs. Hughes, actually introduced us to your book through a book talk. We all got our hands on a copy and read it all in the matter of four days. ( A day per person) We loved inferring what the monster's true meaning was. Emily and I's favorite character was the Monster himself! For my persuasive speech in L.A. I am writing about why you deserve a Newberry Honor Award! It would mean so much if you wrote back. By the way, how many copies were sold??
You are an amazing writer and the illustrations were just plain fantastic!
-Amanda
"The knife of never letting go" and "The answer and the asking" are driving me nuts! They are soooo good. Really, you are now my favorite author (back in 2009 was Stephanie Meyer and last month was Suzanne Collins) but as of today it is you!
The downside is that I am writing a novel and after reading yours I feel...well, you know, how could I ever come close to write something as good as yours?
And finally, is there a writer that EVERYBODY loves? You are awesome!
And yes, I am on my way to read the final book.
Hey Patrick.
I love Chaos Walking, and I think it's
PERFECTLY FINE WITH ONLY 3 BOOKS!!
As for the movie Russell Crowe Would be perfect for the Mayor. I Read some of these comments and one guy said
that when Manchee died he almost stopped reading them.
The Same thing happened to me. (It's a good thing i didn't seeing as they are my favorite books. EVER!!) I am a guy, Repeat 14 yr old guy and Chaos Walking is the only Book/Series I have ever cried during.
The reason I think they would be better without a 4th
novel is because with [edited for spoilers, sorry], it is the perfect ending to that adventure. If you were to write a 4th about [edited] I don't think it would be as good. (No Disrespect, You could probably make it as good. I just love it the way it is.
I just finished the Chaos Walking series. I really really really enjoyed it. I cried so much when [edited for spoilers, sorry}
So are you writing a 4th book???? Please say you are!!!!
Emma :-)
dear Patrick Ness
i read the whole Choas Walking series. I really hate that there is no more to the series. I mean the way you left the book Monsters of Men end makes it have even more potential to continue into more books. I would love to see move of the series. Hope you eventually continue the series and have it made into a movie, good luck with your writings!
sinceraly, Cody
Dear Patrick,
I'm writing from Saint Ann's School in Brooklyn, NY, where our Mock Newbery Committee - brand new this year and comprised of twenty-five 4th and 5th graders - has chosen A Monster Calls as our Mock Newbery Award winner. We started with 37 books, and got A Monster Calls a bit later on, but the kids loved it, and many of them said it changed the way they look at the world.
Thanks for writing it!
Hannah Mermelstein
Saint Ann's librarian
Please know there's a cluster of librarians in Virginia hoping hard that your Monster Calls gets the Newbery. It is a perfect book.
Patrick,
I am re-reading the Chaos Walking series again. They are some of my favorite books. Please tell me you're going to write a 4th book following Monsters of Men!?
Hi Patrick!
I love your chaos walking series soo much! Monsters of Men is the best!!!!! It makes me cry everytime, its just brilliant :)
I havent read a monster calls because I have read all of siobhan dowd's books and I am slightly scared that it will change my views on her.... Im not sure why though because I love both hers and your writing :)
What are your favourite books at the moment? Have you ever read any of Michael Grants work(the Gone series)?
Also, where do you get the ideas for your characters? Mayor Prentiss, Todd and Viola are so unique!
I love it all, thank you for writing such excellent books!!!!!
(quietly calms down by saying I am the cricle and the circle is me)
XD xx
I both hated and loved The Knife of Never Letting Go. I want to both recommend and not recommend the Chaos Series. You had me from the first paragraph and I read it nonstop, but.....I'm so upset with what happens to [edited for spoilers - though you can probably guess] that I may not be able to read the rest of the series or any of your other books. pure genius and evil at the same time. If you do not write [edited] into the fourth book (better be a 4th to make this happen)...I will forever hold a grudge. Congrats to you on writing a book that makes it hard to tell yourself....it's not real, it's just a book.
Dear Patrick,
Thank you so much for writing your incredible Chaos Walking Trilogy, I can honestly say that they are some of my favourite books ever. I was so ecstatic when I found out that you had sold the movie rights, I just can't wait to hear about when the auditions are, I've made a promise to myself that I will try out for the part of Viola if a movie is ever made, because she's the most fantastic heroin ever, she's truly inspiring. Please make a movie soon! haha, thank you so much once again for being an amazing author :)
Darcy xxx
PLZ do aditions in vancouver i really want play viola i have spent enouph time at my mirror pretending to be her! At this point i might actually have some form of skill! I did drama in school if that counts. I am extatic just to be talking to you i keep trying to think of something to write but i am honestly speechless! At least if i dont get to play viola please make sure she will be played by a nobody. I am seriously considering getting an agent just so i even have a shot at being apart of something so amazing.
I think we can all agree your books are amazing! I heard that you are making a movie and i strongly suggest that you include the song us against the world by coldplay because it perfectly protrays all the obstcles that Todd and Viola have to over come throughout the course of the trilogy!
I Can't wait to see who is casted!
Hey Patrick, I've chosen to do the first two books in Crimson Walking for my grade 11 ISU, and I find it amazing how you wrote such an amazing trilogy in just 3 years! I sure would wish other authors would be more like you haha (not mentioning any names here, but waiting 3-4 years per book is unacceptable). Anyways, thanks for the pleasure of reading those books and best of luck with any future projects of yours.
I am 55 years old and read mysteries and young adult fantasy. I don't have time to sit and read so I listen to audiobooks. I just finished The Knife of Never Letting Go. When I finished it all I could say was "Oh, my God". I have the next book downloaded and ready to go. When I find an author I like, I put their website on my favorites list. I found out it is a trilogy. The narrator for you audiobook was tremendous. He made all of the characters come to life, especially Manchee who always made me smile.
Patrick,
I'm currently reading ''Monsters of Men''. I have to say i love this trilogy! i haven't finished the third yet but i just got to the part were [edited quite a lot for spoilers, sorry, but I did read it!]
Sincerely,
Deanna
p.s.
1017 is my daughters birthday day! so i thought that was kinda cool.
Hello, Patrick,
I love "A Monster Calls." Thanks so much for writing it. :-)
Here's a link to my column about it: http://www.al.com/living/index.ssf/2012/01/patrick_ness_a_monster_calls_p.html

Hey, I just wanted to say I LOVE the Chaos Walking books. Also, can I just post this link here - http://chaoswalking.wikia.com/wiki/Chaos_Walking_Wiki Me and a few other people are working on this wiki dedicated to your Chaos Walking books. It's quite small at the moment and I'm wondering if I could post it here to improve the communty. Thanks again for writing such great books :D
hey patrick you know your walking caous seres? the monsters of men was that the last book? if it is please write more! it is my favorite book ever? if it isnt then please send me the name of the next book i need to read them all! please write more of these books!!
Hi Patrick,
I am a French teacher in Ipswich and I am just about to start studying "La Voix Du Couteau" with my Year 10 and 11 GCSE students. We have been studying Harry Potter but the kids are getting a bit tired and when I took a straw poll of the classes, only 3 students had read the books, so I thought it my duty as a human being to allow them the same enjoyment your books have given me. Thank you.
Hi Patrick!
I'm from Mexico and I want buy "A monster calls" but my english is poor. The book exist in spanish? Where can I buy it?
I would just like to say, I think The Chaos Walking trilogy is absolutely fantastic. I have read all three books over and over and over, and I love your writing! :) Also, does anybody know where I could send a letter to Patrick Ness? Let me know :)
Hey we are like IN LOVE with your books!! They are our favourite books by far and we've heard that the Chaos Walking trilogy is going to become a movie :D!! When we heard we were literally jumping around!! But we were looking at possible Todd's and you should seriously choose Joel Courtney!!! Like fo'reals... He looks just like we pictured and he is an awesome actor!! We think he could really do the amazing part justice and if you wonder who to choose for Todd choose him!! We already are depressed cuz they didn't choose who we wanted for Hunger Games so do us proud, Patrick, do us proud... WE LOVE YOU!!!!! p.s. REPLYY!!!!!!!!
Just wanted to repeat Ryan's question for effect, are you going to write a fourth? I may well be 18 years old but i still enjoyed your trilogy (way to captivate a huge audience) and would love to see the characters continue their travels...
Other than that, thanks for deciding to write (y)
This is now my third comment here, haha. I would just like to say, i finished monsters of men for the third time this morning, and i still manage to bawl my eyes out! I do cry at some books but normally only the first time.
I'd also like to say i can't wait for the film! But i am of course dreading it, as any fan or their favourite series would be. I'm interested in how noise will be conveyed, and who will act it. I have no acting talent but i may have to follow my urges and audition as manchee. Or being an extra, maybe village girl number four, would suffice.
And for my final point, i want to say that this art website has it's own group (which i am proudly in) dedicated to chaos walking. They have some beautiful art by fans of the series, some are scenes from the books, others are predictions as to what happens next! i thought you might like to see them. http://chaoswalking.deviantart.com/gallery/?set=24509846&offset=0
Hi,
I love your "chaos walking" trilogy and although some people say that the ending of "Monsters Of Men" [a whole bunch of really wonderful stuff about the ending, which I did read, but had to edit out for spoilers! Good stuff, though -- PN]
In my honest opinion I believe you should write a fourth book (or more) to extend "chaos walking" beyond being just a trilogy.
Also I believe that the trilogy (and possibly extras) would be great, best seller films as are the books themselves.
I hope you read this comment and take other commented ideas into consideration.
I cant wait to read "A Monster Calls" I hope it will be as gripping and addictive as were the books "The Knife Of Never Letting Go", "The Ask And The Answer" and "Monsters Of Men".
I hope to maybe get in touch and maybe be part of your greatness.
Ryan Johnson,
A newbie auther, aged 13
To say I've been slightly obsessed with your writing the last few weeks is an understatement. I picked up "The Knife of Never Letting Go" at my favourite indie bookstore in my city. I was early for a dinner date, had some time to kill so I popped in to browse. The guy on staff was eyeing me while I mulled titles in the YA section. He then pulled out your book, handed it to me and walked away. He didn't say a word. I thought it was odd at the time, but shrugged and gave it a buy. I understand now. There really are no words to describe your series. It's a leap of faith.
I love that you've taken the rule book on writing YA and chucked it out the window. You've not made your characters the typical 17 year olds every YA author seems to do, because it's "safe." But then you've taken those characters and put them through a gamut of emotion and hardship, ripped their hearts out (and ours) stomped on them (and ours) and then put them back together only to do it all over again. You pull no punches; writing outside of the formula where death and violence usually needs to be coddled. Instead, you've given it all a purpose, and a damn amazing one, too. On twitter, I said you have brass balls...one day I hope to have the balls to write like you. Thank you for an incredible ride.
Dear Patrick,
Just finnished monsters of men..... and I'm amazed that someone can write that well. I cried when [edited for spoilers, sorry], I was so happy when [edited] and then I cried when [edited again, sorry]. Please WRITE ANOTHER CHAOS WALKING. We don't care if the series was ment to be a trilogy write another please! :)
Your biggest fan,
Jade W.
I love your Chaos Walking books,I love the characters most of all which leads me to ask this - are you going to write a fourth book,or a new series about Todd,Viola and all the other amazing characters you've created?
Wow. I just read A Monster Calls. It was just...amazing. What a book. Wow. It is totally deserving of the Newbery, but I find that books deserving of the Newbery rarely WIN the Newbery, but I hope this year it will win and turn that whole Newbery deal around! Fantastic.
Just awesome.
Obviously I am not a writer, so this post is pretty bad! But I just had to tell you...wow...amazing and incredible and I can't wait to recommend it to everyone. THANK YOU for sharing your time and talents with all of us.
Blessings,
Ing
Dear Mr. Patrick Ness,
Thankyou so very much for writing these amazing books. They're brilliant!
Your style of writing is really unique and interesting. It is similar to the writing style of Huckelberry Finn, which is one of my favourite books (along with the Chaos Walking Trilogy, of course!)
Good luck with everything you're working on now. I can't wait to read A Monster Calls and again, thankyou for the amazing Chaos Walking Trilogy,
Aoife :)
YOU NEED TO WRITE A 4TH CHAOS WALKING BOOK!!!
Please?
Yours books are amazing! I have really all the Chaos Walking trilogy and have literally just finished A Monster Calls. I got the Chaos walking when I was younger and not into reading but picked them up recently and they are wonderful! I have managed to persuade my mum and friends to read then who all love them as much as I do! And A Monster Calls is just fantastic, I'm in tears but it was so, so good! Also, if it would be at all possible to tell Jim Kay I love his artwork in the book and I think it fits in perfectly!
I'm now stuck for books now, can you suggest any other books by you or by authors that write books like you that I could get hold of and read?
Thank-you, Imy
P.S thanks for editing out the spoilers, it made me laugh trying to work out what they had said!
I EFFING LOVE THE CHAOS WALKING TRILOGY. I didn't think i could be so obsessed with a book until i read the series. Whilst i was reading it felt as if i was living in 2 worlds. The characters you created felt so real, everything Todd and Viola felt i felt with them. The mayor is so twisted you could never predict what he would do next. There was never a more endearing villian. Towards the end of Monsters of Men i cried, more then i have in any book or movie. I really didn't want the series to end, If there were 20 Chaos Walking books i would have read them all. Your my favourite author. I hope the upcoming movie does your work justice. I Have a feeling everyone will fall in love with the world you created just as much as i did. Thanks for being such an amazing writer (:
Mr. Patrick Ness,
I walked into an airport book store in Seattle, where I live, looking for a book to read on the plane to Phoenix. I saw your book, The Knife of Never Letting Go, and read the blurb and thought it sounded interesting. I then looked at the author name and saw yours. I, in all seriousness, bought the book because we share the same last name. One that I don't think is too common to see around anymore! I started reading the book, and got hooked almost immediately. I then, while visiting family in AZ, had to buy the next two books in the Chaos Walking series, knowing I would soon finish the first, and would need to read the next. I'm only in the first 100 pages or so of, The Ask and the Answer, and I'm loving it so far. Although I'm just about 20 years old, I believe this series is suiting for any adult as well as teenage readers. Seeing how good these books are, I'm very tempted to, after I'm done reading the Chaos Walking series, to buy, The Crash of Hennington. Thanks so much for writing these books! They're great and I would recommend them to any of my friends looking for a good read.
Dear Patrick,
Have just read Your's and Siobhan Dowd's 'A MONSTER CALLS'
Found it Breathtakingly brilliant, heartbreaking, lyrical, Intense, harrowing, and unforgettable
Thank you Patrick, for the best book I've ever read, and will treasure forever ...
Dawn x
PS .. To anyone thinking of buying this wonderful book
Don't wait for the pb ... the HB is such a lovely book, and one you will want to keep forever .....
I'm an English teacher and so keep a look out for exciting and well-written books that are coming out. I have devoured your Chaos Walking trilogy over the xmas week and just loved them!! I'm now thinking of ways in which I can use them to inspire the young people I teach. My favourite character was the Return - very well drawn, complex 'person'. Thank you for writing them - I am now going to investigate your back catalogue. Jenny x
Bloody loving the Chaos Walking Books
My Aunty bought them for me as a Christmas present.
If a film is made I'd love to audition for it
Thanks for a great series
David
Dear Mr. Patrick Ness,
I just want to start off by saying thank you.
Your Chaos Walking books are the most beautifully written, amazingly executed, exciting, wholesome, and powerful things I have ever read, bar none. I have read so many books in my life, and yet none have ever quite been able to reach me in such a way that yours have. Your characters are so real, the story so meaningful, and the plot nearly impossible to predict. I'm glad that it ends in such a way that it lets the reader conclude for themself what becomes of everything.
I just want to let you know that you truely inspire me. Your books are the most powerful novels I could have ever hoped to read, and I look forward to reading A Monster Calls, ASAP.
Sincerily,
Anslee
P.S. I eagerly await the Chaos Walking movie!
i love your books and would like to have information about auditions if lionsgate is making the movie it would be an honor if you could help me out. thanks one of your biggest fans, amber :)
hey patrick,
when i saw the knife of never letting go in my school linary i thouhgt the blurb was amazing and when i actually read the book it was superb... the ask and the answer was brilliant but my favourite wAS monsters of men espeically the way you describe how the cHARACTER IS FEELING AND WHEN [edited for spoilers, sorry] is hurrendously funny ... these books are absoloutly amazing and don't know how you could come up with such a superb story ... XX Ifrom jochebed P.S i love the YA YA YAS interview its amazing xx
All of your books place holes in my heart when I finish them, because I know I won't be able to read them again for the first time. So, for my stability, please never stop telling wonderful stories.
I picked up your Chaos Walking books by chance, doubtful as to whether I would enjoy them or not. I did enjoy them. I have enjoyed them so much I literally haven't done anything else but read them for the past two days and I have never cried so much in a short space of time before. I've enjoyed them so much I do not want the story to end, which is why you have to continue the Chaos Walking series. It is cruel to end it where you have. I'll leave now to allow you to write, so come on then, there's no time to waste.
P.S I forgot to mention that since reading the Chaos Waling books I have begun to adopt Todd's dialect and it ain't good. Will this side effect soon pass?
Dear Mr. Ness
I was a little apprehensive about reading your books. But once I got started I couldn't stop! I got all three books for christmas this year and I am sure that they will be finished very very soon! You are obviously a very talented writer and just after reading your first book in the chaos walking trilogy. I aspire to be a good writer some day. After reading a particularly good book I wonder how the author did it. I'm not asking for your secrets or your files of amazingness i just want to know some tips on how to be better. I'm sure you have gotten hundreds of e-mails like this before and I totally understand if you can't write back, I can imagine that you are a very busy man, but if you have a minute some time....... well I would really apreaceat it.
I love your work and if you did read this thank you for your time.
L.E.F
Hello Mr. Ness,
I'm fifteen (and French), and here and now I'd like to say thank you. Last night, I couldn't sleep and so I've read A Monster Calls (got it for Christmas), until it was far too late to find sleep, and until I finished it. It was so breathtaking, so TRUE, I don't even have the words (might be a french problem, though)to say how much I've been moved by this book. Both Chaos Walking trilogy and A Monster Calls make me feel respected as a reader. When I'm writing myself, I use everything I've learnt, especially what I've learnt from books I've read. And your books taught me more than others, about another way of telling a story, about how to tell the truth. It's when I read this kind of books that I'm sure of what I want to do and of the kind of stories I want to tell.
Wow, a very long comment for a tiny thing !
Well, that's it, thank you very much for writing so stunning books (and sorry for sounding a bit awkward, my English is not so good yet !)
Eloise
PS : Is there any chance for you to ever come to North of France ? It would be such a pleasure to meet you ! :)
Your books are outstanding! I have read th first two of Chaos Walking and I am in the middle of the third. They are all BRILLIANT! You have done the story so perferctly, and I have no idea how it is going to end. I don't know how you came up with this, but it's really amazing and I've never read anything like it.
From Jessie in South Africa.
I just read A Monster Calls and wanted to thank you for writing such a brilliant, heartfelt story. Now I'm going to look up everything else you've ever written--and pass this one on to my 11YO who loves this kind of book.
For Christmas every year my neighbor goes into the book-shop in town and asks the person at the desk for a set of books that a fourteen year old girl who only reads horror/thriller books, would love. The person working in the shop handed my neighbor the Chaos Walking trilogy. I was gutted to tell her that I had already fed off the series almost six months ago. The series is so addictive all of my friends crave the books! I loved them!
hi!!
i got a monster calls for christmas, and started reading basically as soon as i opened it......and finished it before lunch the same day!!!:) it was that good!
thank youuu!!
I've just finished A Monster Calls and am alternately crying and smiling. Thank you so much for creating such magic in its purest form of a story.
How could [edited for spoilers, sorry]!!!!! I cried. Love the books. I am on the 2nd chaos walking, I don't want it to end!!!
Jade
WOW!
Your books are amazing!
I just finished Monsters of Men, and I must say, you are brilliant.
Patrick,
Thank you for "A Monster Calls." It came walking for me at the perfect moment.
Sincerely,
Emily
Hi Patrick (or should I call you Mr. Ness?),
I just finished reading The Knife of Never Letting Go and it was amazing!! And now I have to wait till Christmas for the next book in the trilogy..
Anyway, I just wanted to say you're a really good writer, I was able to place my self in Todd's world completely and Manchee made me laugh, and cry...
Bye, J
Hi Patrick! I'm a creepy fan who's obsessed with your books, and I force all my friends to read them
Oh, and I can't wait to read more of your books; I'm disappointed I haven't gotten the pre-Chaos Walking ones yet. I'm working on it! A Monster Calls was amazing.
Hey there! Ok so i'm a long time (and big time) fan of your Chaos Walking trilogy and just so happened to discover that Lionsgate has bought the rights to the trilogy! I think i stand for a majority of the fan base when i say that i'm extremely excited....and extremely terrified by this news. Excited because, well, my all-time favorite book series is going to be a movie! Terrified because Hollywood usually butchers movies based on books. I was wondering if maybe you'll pull a Suzanne Collins move and work on the script? I feel that i would (and i'm sure many other fans as well) feel a whole lot more excited and ready to see the movies if we know a great mind like yours is making sure the producers and writers stay on track with the books :) Because for them to take apart and change such a masterpiece should be considered illegal.
Just a consideration coming from a loving fan :)
Anyway, i must say that Chaos Walking has definately found a secure place in my heart. I haven't felt such real emotion coming from a book series in...well ever! No book has made me angry, laugh, cry, or made me want to chunk the book across the room (in a good way) like yours did. The character depth, the action, the emotion, the cliff-hanging keep-you-on-your-toes suspense, it all made this book seem so real to me and i thank you for sharing it. Whenever somebody asks me for book suggestions Chaos Walking is always the first. I'm getting A Monster Calls as a Christmas prestent for myself and i cannot wait to start reading! Thanks again for an amazing story!
Hi. My name's Ellie, and I'm thirteen years old. I just wanted to say how absolutely awesome your Chaos Walking Trilogy is. I read everything, everywhere, all the time - and I have to say that your books are right up there at number 1 on my list.
Todd has to be my favourite character of all time. I could relate so much to everything he did; when he was hitting Manchee I was like- That's so like me when I've had a bad day and I come home and whack my brothers for no reason. So yeah.
I'm also really into acting, and I just wondered whether someone is going to make the books into films, because I would love to audition as Viola. I don't know whether I'm too late, or if it's never going to happen but I'm just letting you know that I exist.
Thanks for writing such amazing books. They really inspired me and I seriously enjoyed reading them. Every single page.
Hi Pat,
I have just got done reading the chaos walking trilogy and look forward to "A monster calls" but then i heard that there would be movie's on this trilogy, and my heart did a backflip.
but for more then one reason
I am above all excited out of my mind to see that something of such literary beauty will get a chance at the big screen. And i anticipate it greatly (any idea on when it may b finished?) I also worry though. I can't explain why but you seem like a man who cares deepley about your work, and this seems like something you wouldn't want to just leave to hollywood. I implore you to oversee the production yourself, for both myself and another fan of the book I know, would hate to see this go wrong. I know if you oversaw the event though, you could eliminate that worry entirely. Secondly, don't rush the event, put as much time and heart as you put into the books themselves. Finally, many people i either read about online o know in person loved the ending of the book like no other, but desire a true ending to the book itself. I for one, agree completely, and it is my own personaly opinion that (*SPOILER ALERT, SKIP TO NEXT PARAGRAPH TO AVOID SPOILERS*) you tell the definite fait between...well i think you know what i meen. even with my alert i do NOT want to ruin the ending for nobody, but you left the end of the book leaving most readers in wondering as to the end fate of a certain someone. Please make sure it is done justice...and i do hope that we can see a finale end to the series, so as i kan resist the temptation, nay the DESIRE to want to bug you to finish it up so we can now the finale fate of everything and everyone.
Thanks for the books :)
Chris H.
Heyy if you need an actress for the chaos walking movies im free :) But seriously are auditions in UK because it would be the biggest dream come true to even audition :) LOVE YOUR BOOKS and also PLEASE ;) x
Dear Patrick,
I am a young artist from Blackpool who has just finished her fine arts degree from the university of central Lancashire. I spent most of my 3rd year consentrating on video editing and dance performance. Once that was over I wanted a break from video for a while to consentrate on drawing and illustrating again and also getting back into keeping an art journal, which sat on a shelf for months...
So I began researching novels to read and different styles of illustrations to inspire my creativity and one day I wondered "Would there be anyone with the name 'Ness' who is an author and works with children's books?" and I discovered you! 'A monster calls' looks like such a beautiful book-it is on my christmas wish list!I love dark/sad fairy tales like Pan's Labyrinth. Did you know the name "Ness" is an ancient Norwegian name of a clan that eventually settled in scotland?
Looking forward to reading "a monster calls" and many more of your books in the near future!
Love Katie Ness
I loved the chaos walking series, and I went to the book store the other day, to ask if they had a fourth book, and I got really dissapointed when they said it was only a trilogy. I was really dissapointed and maybe, you could write a short story because it ended soo soon.
I would definately read it. And im sure anyone else who read the trilogy would read the book too.
Please? Even if its only 20 pages?
Dear Patrick,
You are definately the next J.K. Rowling and perhaps even better. I read the Chaos Walking Triology and they are incredible. Congrats on getting it bought by Lionsgate but pre warning, if you want the film to be successful like Harry Potter you have to be strict on editing to the plot, casting and the script because Rick Riodarn, who is also a great writer, had his book made into a film and despite it being an amazing series of books, the casting didn't work, the plot was wrong and it just didn't work. Sorry I'm nop film critic or in any position to be giving you advise but I just love your books so much so I have really high hopes for the film
Eleanor
Can't wait for the movies. Would love to play Viola but probably wouldn't get an audition. I actually wish sometimes to play her. I can't wait to see who is actually chosen to play Todd and Viola as I'm the same age as them and I hope they're unknown. I cried at the end of the last book. I loved them and I'm really sad I'm finished them.
I have a close friends that says there are only two things that drive people and protagonists--love and fear. Love and fear. I had only felt the essence of this truth in one book prior to reading A Monster Calls. I now have two favorite books.
I adored The Chaos Walking trilogy. I was initially annoyed by the change in perspectives in the second book, but the third book explained this shift. I read Knife of Never Letting Go twice. I have had so much to say about it that it is rarely checked in at the Library where I work.
I have barely begun to talk about A Monster Calls. I am not sure how to speak about it. A few books, a rare few, actually have a soul. And, that, Mr. Ness, is just beyond what my feeble brain can comprehend and explain.
I hope you are eligible for the Newbery. If not, you will be the winner in all of our American hearts anyway!
More books please!
Sincerely,
Laini
Thank you for chaos walking. I cried at the end and I believe you wrote the best ending in literary history (maybeee I'm going a bit far but you get my gist). I want to name my daughter Viola now. If she grew up nearly as brave and all -around amazing as Viola Eade, I would be immensely proud
Hey Patrick :)
Im 14 years old and read all of the Chaos walking series in a week, i was crying so much throughout the books. I just want to say you are a fantastic writer :) the Chaos Walking series is one of my favourites :).
Hello. I was originally a fan of The Chaos Walking Trilogy, but I recently read A Monster Calls. I must say that it is an excellent book that everyone should read. I especially liked "You do not write your life with words, the monster said. You write it with actions. What you think is not important. It is only important what you do." I also like the picture of the robot from The Castle in the Sky.
Hi Patrick, I am 26 years old and discovered your Chaos Walking trilogy books at the school library my son attends. I thought they were absolutely amazing and so did my (31 years old) husband. Recently the librarian gave me your 'A Monster Calls' book and I must say it is the most beautiful book I have ever read. I never ever get upset but this book touched me in a way that no other has. I think you are an amazing author and I love reading your books. Looking forward to your future works.
i have found the perfect song for the chaos walking series
it is called Dance with the Devil by Breaking Benjamin
Hi Patrick,
I just wanted to leave a note saying how fantastic I think the Chaos Walking books are. Im 19 (hi from Australia!) and typically I dont read much YA fiction because most of the real estate in that section is occupied by sparkly lovelorn vampires and the like. I picked up the Knife of Never Letting go yesterday and finished it this morning.
I've read that the best YA books stroll out of their category and this is so true of Chaos Walking. Todd's honesty, bravery and his youthful innocence contrast so starkly against the darkness that surrounds him. I loved (and by same token, hated) sharing Todd's frustration as we slowly find out the truth about Prentisstown and the New World, piece by piece.
I'm an aspiring Young Adult writer myself (heavy emphasis on the word aspiring, I have so much to learn) but I know that if I ever write a half-decent book I'll definitely be listing you as one of my inspirations.
I will recommend your books to everyone I can because I think you have achieved something truly wonderful with this series. I can't wait to get stuck into the second book.
Thank you for your time,
Natalie
Hi, Mr. Ness.
I know about the translation of your book ("A Monster Calls")for the portuguese idiom! I'am a brazilian reader and I hope the book.
Hello there,
Hi my names Daniel it has been a real thrill ride reading your books Patrick that i decided to write on you for one of my authors study. I know you might think another usual reader doing this, but this is real today im writing a business letter to you but i cant seem to find your mailing address if u can supply me with the address that will be cool. And just to let u know if u reply to my letter afterwards i get xtra credit. At this point u might be thinking "He's just in it for extra credit" no im not i just want to learn more about you.
Sincerely,
Daniel
Hello Patrick!
My name is Kayla, i'm thirteen. A few days ago i was in my school library trying to find a good book, and i found your novel 'A Monster Calls'so i borrowed it and started to read it! Then just a few minutes ago i finished it!
I absolutely loved it! you are an amazing writer and i hope you know that! There arent many writers that make meaningful stories that get to your heart like that anymore and i'm glad you do!
I suggest you write more creepy stories like a monster calls haha
Have a nice day!
Hello, Patrick Ness. I'm a girl, 13 years old. I just wanted to say your books have changed my life. I sound like a weird person, saying books have changed my life. But they have.
Your stories are so delicately and shatteringly told and so devastating I cried, laughed and threw the book on the floor in frustration.
I can't stop thinking about Todd and Viola.
I'm writing a story of my own, and I can't stop reading the relationship between Todd and Viola. Do they love each other?
You are my favourite author, your books are my favourite. I've read them all so many times, and they always leave me reeling.
If your making it into a movie, please choose the actors and actresses carefully. I don't think even the best actor could portray some of your characters.
Thank you. :-D
Oh, and nice picture. :)
I've recently read the three chaos walking books and, just today, finished 'a monster calls'. A monster calls and the chaos walking books are beautifully written and I am truly inspired. Your books are currently my favourites and I hope you write a new young adults book.
Hi!
I just wanted to say that I love your books so so much!! My favourite characters are Manchee and Davy Prentiss Junior at the end of The Ask and The Answer.
I really hope there will be a movie for the series because I love them so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From Christina
Hi Patrick,
I've recently been reading a lot of YA books. My early teenage daughter is a heavy reader and I started reading YA looking for good books for her to read. I've also really enjoyed the genre and now I'm reading them for my own enjoyment. I was a teenager in the 70s and this type of genre was not really available.
I really enjoyed Chaos Walking - Thanks for the journey.
I hope that you can extend the journey but I can understand why you would stop were you did.
On another note - I found "A New World" on Goodreads.com and was ecstatic. I then tried to download it from Amazon and was told that it was not available for Australia - I'm now a very sad panda.
Any chance of getting it made available to those of us down under??
Cheers
Dear Patrick,
It's 1.15 am in the UK and I have just read "A Monster Calls" in one sitting. It is a truly beautiful book.
I am still crying as I type this but also feel so uplifted by the story.
I'm sure Siobhan Dowd would be delighted and very proud of this book.
Jim Kay's illustrations complement the story and add their own special magic.
Can't wait to return it to the library I work in tomorrow and tell all my customers to experience this book.
PS Still missing Viola and Todd desperately!!!
Dear Patrick
I must just let you know I am an avid fan, and I can't wait for the movie(so don't mess it up, I talk from experience :P). I would just like to point something out to you and wonder if there is an answer:
Todd's mom plays such a big role, with the whole journal thing, but how come we never learn her name?
Or how come his dad is only mentioned once?(For this one I guess it's because of Ben, but still, nothing on him - at all).
Also, what woman would have a child with the mayor, I mean there has to be someone, but who would be that possessed? He's crazy, unless he wasn't before, but becomes mental....
Hmmm...
Just wondering if you could give some authors insight, that's all. [edited for spoilers, sorry]
Anyhoo..
Can't wait for any new stories,
Tash
I saw you at the literature festival in cheltenham, I asked you about writers block. Here is the website you asked me for

Hey Patrick Ness,
I want to say that I absolutely love the Chaos Walking Trilogy and A Monster Calls. I am an avid reader and sometimes have trouble finding a good book to read. After some thought I decided to give the Chaos Walking Trilogy a try and found that it fufilled all my criteria in a book. I have found that after reading a great deal of books that they often become repetitive but with your books it took me totally be surprise. I have got to say as well that A Monster Calls had me bawling my eyes out for a long time after reading and then again on the second. I was amazed at this as only one other book had managed this and it was the Book Thief. All I have to say after this mini essay is keep up the good work, I love it and so do many other readers. :)
I was very impressed with your trilogy "Chaos Walking". Read the first paragraph in the first book and was hooked by the end of the page. I don't usually read books. The only series I've read is the Artemis Fowl series and this trilogy (Which could easily become a series if you deemed necessary). Which is why i'm commenting, actually. The ending of the first book was marvelous, it wasn't a day later when I started reading the second. After the second, I bought the third and read that within a week. I could not have been more impressed, simply because you flawed my prediction skills. Usually I can predict what's going to happen, but this book proved me wrong. Whatever I thought would happen, it would be turned upside-down, twisted left to right, and deep-fried before it was returned to me. Not to mention the perfect mix of romance, suspense, and fast-paced reading (2nd favorite). [edited for lots of spoilers about the end, sorry] What I do know about you from your books, Mr. Ness, is that you love to take left turns. Why spare such a perfect opportunity? (In other words, a series?)
I just finished reading A Monster Calls. I'll totally admit that this was an impulse buy for me while on vacation and I was sucked in by the cover art. Thank GOD I was because this was one of the most moving and beautiful books I've read in quite a long time! I didn't even realize it was illustrated until I got home.
Thanks!
Preita
I loaded down the kindle onto my smart phone and was looking around inside the app when I came across free books to read. Saw your free short story titled "The New World" I read it and was blown away with the story. But there's one problem with it. IT ENDED!! leaving me with unanswered questions. Please finish the story. I want more of what happened to the little girl on the new planet, all along.
Hi Mr. Ness,
I completed the "Chaos Walking" series a little over two months ago, and I'm still reeling. I just can't stop thinking about it. I've not felt such a jolting connection to a work of writing for a long while. The end of the third book moved me to tears, and that's not something that happens to me often.
Just wanted to thank you for writing that series. I've got "A Monster Calls" on the shelf now, and ready to tear into it asap.
very best regards,
Chris
Dear, Patrick Ness
hey i just finished Monsters of Men last night and i cryed alot (just like i cryed alot in the other 2 books) but i really hope you can continue the series. i understand its a trilogy but tv series make seasons. so you could make like a season 2 or part 2 of the series and continue because i was hoping for so much and the ending sounds like its going to continue. (well to me it does) but i love the series and hope mabey a movie or a continuation of the series comes out.
sinceraly, Cody
I just got done reading the Chaos Walking Trilogy and I would like to know if you are planning on making more books because I would like to know what happens to Todd, Viola, and the rest of the characters in these books.
P.S. I dont normally read but your books are just amazing I love them so much
Hope you get back to me on this and thank you for reading it
Sincerely
Dillon
I had just about read every book in the teen section of my local library, and I was seriously dissapointed with many of them. Dont get me wrong there's a ton of great books but after a while they all seem to have the same plots and characters. Then I came upon your first two books of the chaos walking trilogy...and WOW! I was hooked after the first sentence. I read both books in two days, then I read them again. I bought them and re-read them and was the first on the waiting list for Monsters of men. I truly cant describe my love for your books, they are unique, epicly stupendous. And I love your writing style, and the layout for each page is genius. And how you swtich back and forth between Todd and Viloa in fast paragraphs!...I also liked that you chose to bring up some topics that people ignore, there are some fantasic lines - which I highlighted in my copies... Iam such a nerd. Last comments: The last chapters of Monsters of men brought me to tears!(literally distraught) I was highly moved by this series and has pushed every one to read it. Cant wait to read A Monster Calls!! I hope to see more books from you and would love to see this series made into movies, if theres any possiable way way to translate it into film (?) -sorry for the rant-
hey! i absolutley adore your series (chaos walking)! they're written so well! i acctually cried in "the knife of never letting go" when manchee died! have you ever thought about making them into a movie?? alot of people would like it!!! but anyways... i am an aspiring writer and am currently working on a book now. and i would like to communicate with you about some things and get some advice, so i wrote you a letter... but im not sure where to send it...... so if you could give me a mailing address of some sort that would be wonderful!!!
hope to hear soon!
your #1 fan,
Ciara
Last week, my daughter came home from school with "The Knife of Never Letting Go" and convinced me to read it. The next morning I returned it to her and gave her strict instructions to bring home the sequel immediately! She and I quote the book to each other, bonding over the enjoyment of a good book. Thank you for that. And thank you for the opportunity for me to see my tough as nails teenager show such empathy for characters. She will literally burst out in tears if someone says to her "Todd? Ow, Todd".
We finished "Monsters of Men" tonight and again, sobbed, right to the very last page. I beg of you, write a fourth book for this series! We need more closure!
Thank you again. We look forward to devouring any further work you put out.
Love Chaos Walking. :) My second favourite series. Been a fan for two years now of those books! Woo!
I just bought A Monster Calls today on my Kindle and finished it, and it was amazing. There are no words to describe the feeling I got when I read the ending. I cried. It was just heart-wrenching. You described everything so... wonderfully and I love how you wrote it for Dowd. Amazingly sad story that was. Thank you for writing it and keep up the good work.
I love your books there AMAZING!! I got really excited when i heard you've finally said yes to creating a film out of the series!! :D But what i was wondering is would you (if you have planned this far already) ever have open auditions to play Todd & Viola ? Thanks!! x
Hello Patrick,
Have you considered writing a book on the aftermass of the Chaos Walking triogy? I think it'd be great I'd really love to see where you'd take them to see [edited for spoilers, sorry] Thanks!
Dear Mr. Ness,
I have read all of your chaos walking books and have been addicted to them since the time I started to the time I ended. I sometimes felt as if I were Viola or Todd or 1017 and I got to experience all of your books as if I were them. It would be for the best for the world if you would write another series not just like that, but close to it, so I can have another book to be hooked on.
Sincerely,
Noah
hi Patrick, just finished A Monster Calls, have managed to scrape myself off the floor and thought I'd write to you!
How you manage to encapsulate loss, grief and anger into a little over 100 pages is wonderful, I was crying so hard, I had to take myself off to the bedroom and take breaks so my eyes would clear enough to see the words!!
I am a 49 yr old YA librarian/ wanna-be writer in Christchurch New Zealand, and I read the Chaos Walking Trilogy as partly work, partly for my own love of sci fi and it was a stunner also. Loved the premise, the characters, the world you created - the page turning suspense - great stuff, thank you. I bored collegues, friends and family ranting about it, encouraging all to read it and along with The Road by Cormac McCarthy (Do read it if you haven't already) they were my top reads of the last year. I downloaded Monster on my new ebook and just loved, loved, loved it... Connor is wonderful, honest and real and I even loved the monster! I'll never look at a Yew tree in the same way again! Looking forward to your new book!! Jacqui
The Chaos Walking books were amazing. It really opened my mind to the truth of just being me when everyone is saying something else. It would be wonderful to see the trilogy in movies.
Keep writing,
Noah
Hey Mr. Ness,
I was just wondering if you actually DID read all of your comments, and if so, hello!I really enjoyed your Chaos Walking Trilogy and was wondering if you answered questions about the series etc. Thanks!
From Moose, an inspired 14 year old.
Hi! Your Chaos Walking trilogy was amazing! the best books!!! I want to know, have you ever thought about making a movie for the first book- The Knife of Never Letting Go? I think that would be amazing and soo many people would love to see it! Please get back to me, thanks!!
Keep writing,
Sara
-Waves back to Patrick and giant robot in Tokyo-
The Chaos Walking Trilogy is truly amazing. Once i picked the books up, i couldn't put them down.
Just writing to say thank you very much for all of the effort you must have put in. You truly are a genius.
Further books in the future would also be lovely?:)
Thank-you,
Emily.
Hi Patrick
The teacher again. Just wanted to let you know that my students in Grades 9 and 10 have read "The New World" and everyone is clamouring for a turn to read our library's single set of the trilogy. One boy's response immediately after reading the story was, "Ma'am! This can't be it! Please tell me there's more!" And this from a boy who had told me that he'd lost his fondness for reading.
Thank you!
I just started your Chaos Walking trilogy, and I'm almost done with the first book. I bought it at a book fair at my school, and I wanted to buy the rest of the series, but I didn't have enough money. Now it'll take a while to get them because I live in China, and it's hard to get a lot of books here. :(
Anyway, I love your book so, so much! I love how you wait until the end of the book to reveal a lot of information; most authors reveal things like that really early. You described the characters really well, but also really subtly so your image of them just kind of creeps into your mind, and I feel like I knew them very well, even some of the characters that didn't appear for a very long time. The characters themselves are great, too. Manchee was, of course, my favorite.
Well, thanks for reading my comment (if you did).
I finished Monsters of Men last night at about 3am (!!) and bawled like a baby like a book has never made me bawl before. Amazing amazing stuff.
Hope the movie does it justice. I wonder how they will do Noise, and Viola's Silence.
Take care mate, can't wait to see what your working on next?
x
i have just finished your chaos walking trilogy and is wondering if there's going to be a fourth. too many unanswered questions, please reply and let me know what you think about all this.
P.S. i actually cried a lot throughout the three books and did a lot of laughing too. your one out of about five author who i really like and love the way you create interesting/totally awesome books!
Hey :) any more news about the movie? x
Hi! im am a huge fan of your Chaos Walking Trilogy! I love the adventure ,danger, and love portrayed between Viola, Todd, and the world! I may be a girl but the only great books are books like these that contain all of these themes into one. I'll admitt at first it was a little confusing at first reading all the noise and everything, but thats also what kept me reading. I am one of those people that when I read a book i feel like im there and am part of each character.I know exactly how each character felt! it was litterally breath taking! The only thing I have to complain about is that its a trilogy. You have to wite a fourth book!!! I tears me apart because i am a curios person and I want to know if [edited for some spoilers, sorry]! Please, I beg of you; write another book! Don't leave us all hanging in our curiosity!!!!!!!!
hi, i'm writing from France. I'm reading the first book (The knife of the never letting go) to my son. As it was difficult for him (he's 13) to get into the story due to the fact that Manchee was talking and all that "noise" around, I wanted to help him so I started reading the book aloud... and reading... and reading... and getting deep into the stories, into the human relationships and all that stuff. And today, with [edited for spoilers, sorry] we almost( or did we) cried ! We've just ordered the sequel(The ask and the answer)... we want to know... so we keep running with Todd and Viola. Thank you for this wonderful trilogy.
Hi Patrick
Thank you for your wonderful writing. Your books have brought so much to me, my husband and our kids (13 and 2x11). Having each read all your books we've laughed and cried together - and alone. I suspect we all still mourn for Manchee. We've argued over and been released by your books, and learned new things about ourselves and each other. We've also found new, spectacular ways of deceiving each other in efforts to be the first to read The Ask & The Answer, and then Monsters. Food and drinks were banned as each tucked up to read A Monster Calls - luck had it we bought a copy you'd signed. It's all been awesome
I can see what's exciting about films for the trilogy, but we're not sold on the idea in our house. We've had lengthy discussions about whether or not we wanted this to happen, and we ultimately agreed that despite the huge pull to see Todd and Viola and all the others, the most satisfying place to see them is likely in our own imaginations. So many wonderful stories have been ruined when shifted to film. Still, there are some exceptions (Shaun Tan's The Lost Thing), so we'll see (no pun intended). Anyway, I sense another lengthy discussion tonight when I tell the news to the fam
Congratulations on your PB in Dublin and thanks again, so much
Sarah
I love you!!- the only way to say it
I love reading, but this series is so beautiful and gripping and no words can explain it!
I finished the series in a week- my family barely seeing me-and I cried and laughed at everything- I feel so connected to the characters! I love Todd and Viola like family- I know I must sound crazy!!!!! I cried so much at the end!!!!! I read the all the books twice in two weeks and I’m not much of a rereader, but I felt I had to! I am currently reading them a third time since my eyes first feasted on them four weeks ago! I would love there to be a movie and if there is will there be any way of playing viola?????-I'm obsessed! Please tell!!!!
However I have another request. Please ( I am on my knees) write a fourth and finale to conclude (trying not to spoil) what happens to Todd, Viola, Ben, Bradley, 1017 and all the new settlers coming, as I’m sure other thirsty fans would agree- as brilliantly touching the end is, it left me haunted and wondering what happens next! This book has changed my perspective to the world and you are the most amazing author- while reading chaos walking it felt like I was right there feeling the hurt and love, standing right next to the characters. You are the most artists with words in the world!
Thank you- my books are forever tear stained:)
Hi Patrick,
I work for teen services in a public library and just finished Monsters of Men. What an amazing trilogy! I do booktalk these books and love that they reache both boys and girls. After reading some mediocre young adult literature, I was so happy to find this story. I think people may be a little tired of me telling them to read your books.
Keep up the good work, these are books that teens will read over and over again.
Regards,
Sandy Hancock
Hi- my other half and I have just read the chaos walking series. I had bought it for a younger member of the family, but a teacher friend at school suggested I read them. WOW! I just want to say 'thank you' for writing books like this- that challenge the thinking of young minds, that are engaging for boys and girls, that DON'T PATRONISE young adults or attempt to shie away from difficult, ugly situations.I aslo think they work on several layers and adults may find them more disturbing, as their knowledge of man's cruelty is far more sophisticated. We have discussed your books and the themes that they bring up quite a lot- considering we are 'mature' readers- that says a lot! I can see these books being part of secondary reading work some day. Maybe that fills you with dread???? Thanks, Rosie P
P.S.
Please don't make a film of this series unless you are convinced it requires it!
i love your books, i am starting to pursue a writing career, my teachers say that its best to start when your young! but anyway, your books and the style that you write in are so inspiring, i really want you to keep writing more chaos walking books. do you have any tips on becoming a author, because so far, its pretty challenging, but very fun, my book is turning out well so far. please email me back!!! =)
ahh my god i have just been WAITING for this movie XD
can i just say, i really do wish you could have made a fourth book.... or a fifth.... and a sixth...
this trilogy could go on forever and i would still follow it
oh yeah, anyway you are a genius, really, and i cried at the end of book one for manchee.. the best dog that never was :)
Patrick,
I would love you to know that I have fallen head over heels for your Chaos Walking books. I have yet to get my hands on the final book in the trilogy, but as soon as I do I will sit down and read and read and read. As I've gotten older, I've been extremely picky about my books. I found The Knife of Never Letting Go in my local library in the new Young Adult section. I thought I'd give it a try, but I was pretty sure I wouldn't like it because my library doesn't have much to read anymore. I was completely astonished by how fabulously you wrote that novel! The way you write your words so it sounds like a boy who's never learned to read or write is phenomenal. I enjoyed it so much, and then I got your second book, and enjoyed it even more! You have definitely become one of my new favorite authors after just two fantastic books. Please keep writing!
~Aiyanna, USA
You're books are going to be a movie. Fudge. I wish you the best. Finally got around to ordering A Monster Calls. I can't wait. Us Americans had to wait a bit for it... but I'm finally getting to it. I your movie will do some justice to Viola and Todd and everyone else. Don't worry about the criticisms because you're all amazing out on your own. No movie needed to bring you up or down. Just don't forget the little people who started writing here, thinking that you're some kind of god sent writer!
Hi Patrick
Ummm... so after posting my comment about the health warning, I read the article about the health warning-violence-uproar-thing. Haha. Not what I meant, though.
As a teacher, I have to agree with you. Teenagers respond most readily to extremes and the skillful combination of extreme violence, love, adventure and tenderness in your novels is your success. If the book doesn't answer to one or all of these requirements, the teenager will label it as boring and move on. Well done, sir.
Some more warm regards
Heidi
Hi Patrick
I just spent about half an hour scrolling through the comments on this page and wondering what I could say that would add to this wave of admiration and appreciation. Should I say something clever, something funny or just gush like everybody else?
(Thoughtful pause)
Oh, well. Here goes... Your books are awesome and your voice is wholly original. I don't know how you do it! Thank you for sharing your gift with us, but please don't write another Chaos Walking. I don't think my nerves could stand one more ride like that! Methinks the cover should have a warning on it: "Do not attempt to read this series before you have increased your lung capacity by 10%. Breathless moments may be hazardous to your health."
A new series, maybe?
Warm regards
Heidi
Dear Patrick, I am a 45 year old father with a six year old. We both read avidly. I just wanted to thank you for writing a superb story, that has to rank as one of the best books i have ever read ( I will read this to my som soon). I love the way it has an appeal to both adults and kids and the structure of the tale is just so good, the way it works through the tale and how denial works. For me, it held a Dickensian flavour that packs the emotional ability of Dickens' writing, along with the moral truisms of Steinbacks of Mice and Men. Even though you know what will happen and what the nightmare is, through your writing ability the climax was not lessened in any way. I lost my mother to cancer last year and though she was old and it was not a harrowing ordeal, the depth of your understanding of this kind of event through the eyes of Cernunus and the child is truly beautiful. Thanks again for a wonderful experience
Kind regards David Conway
I just wanted to say that I read all of your Chaos Walking Trilogy and loved it...
and then I just read A Monster Calls.
I was a sniffling, burbling, horrifying wreck of a woman this morning (which is when I finished it). After six tissues I managed to said to my husband,
"No book has any right to be THIS GOOD!!!!"
And then I burst into tears again.
Congratulations on your most excellent work. It was good tears. Good happy tears. Great tears.
I will continue to tell people how great you are, and spread the word of your most excellent voice.
Thank you for writing. And sharing with us.
Thank you so much.
-Rose
Dear Mr. Ness,
I'm just gonna come out and say it: you're one of the best authors I've seen. I love your books - as soon as I read the first one, I practically had to manhandle my mother to get her to take me to the neasrest library to find the next one. I can't wait to see what literary masterpiece you come out with next. Well, I won't keep you long - I know you have stuff in real life to get to - but you rock my socks. (And if you ever meet a Mr. Derek Landy, tell him to get his lazy rear in gear and get his books to Omaha. Don't know if you writers have secret societies or something where you plot nefarious things, but I just want to cover any bases.)
With all due respect,
Roni
Hello Patrick Ness. I found your Chaos Walking series in my school library. I am a senior that loves to read. The three books I read of yours were very well written. I couldn't put them down until they were finished! I do want to bring up the last book in your Chaos Walking series, Monsters of Men. I liked how the other books lead up to [edited for spoilers, sorry] I, as well as other fans of yours, would love to see a fourth book to the Chaos Walking series. I do hope you atleast consider writing a fourth book for the series and I look forward to the book if you decide to write it!
I have just read A Monster Calls, looking for something to read to my class of Year 6s. I was more moved than by anything else in years and can't possibly read it aloud til I get a grip! It's an astonishing achievement and I can hardly express my admiration. With warm good wishes Jill
Dear Patrick (again),
I literally just finished Monsters of Men 13 minutes ago, at 6:08, and I am truly distraught. I was really surprised how it ended. I think (need) you to right another book telling us how Viola and Todd's life continues and develops! (Not that you haven't done an amazing job already) =)
I wanted to know what inspires you? I am writing a book, at age 13, yes I know, not going to happen, but I still am. I was also wondering how hard it was to get your books published, as I know it is very hard for some people. Thank you so much for writing these amazing books!
Your Dearest Fan,
Olivia

Mr. Ness,
Hello. I'm currently taking an AP English course at my school, and we've got to do American authors. I'm more than pleased to say that you're the author I chose! My teacher was interested in the themes that you choose with Chaos Walking---and I must admit, Chaos Walking is certainly the trilogy that I've been reading for two years straight.
I find the trilogy to be more than a good read--I find the books to be true stories of someone's life.
But personally, if I must say, my favorite character in the trilogy is none other than the one and only Mayor Prentiss. After studying the vernacular that you use in the books, I've noticed how different Todd and the rest of the 'New-Prentisstowners' speak.
If Chaos Walking were to become a film (and I really hope it does!) I'd think that everyone in Prentisstown (Mr. Hammar, Mr. Tate, Cillian, etc) would all sound as if they are from the south. But as Todd explains in the second book, "Mayor Prentiss's voice is much sharper than any old Prentisstown voice he might've had," makes me think that Mayor Prentiss must be British, or at least have a British accent.
Anyhow, these are just a few things I'd noticed in the books.
As you did with Viola in New World, you gave the readers a small insight on Viola's life before she met Todd. (I haven't read it---yet! I hope to.)
Could it be possible that you'd do the same thing with Mayor Prentiss? Sort of give the whole story of the Mayor, from first book to last? Told in first person?
Anyhow, it'd be interesting.
Hope you keep writing!
I hope to read A Monster Calls soon, as well!
Best wishes,
Mitch Boucher
Dear Patrick,
I'm a huge fan of your books! I'm reading Monsters of Men right now and I'm obsessed!!!!! My mom yells at me all the time because I'm always up in my room reading your amazing book! I just wanted to tell you that I'm soooooo excited that they are going to make a movie! I think its going to be awesome, no matter what, even if people say it might ruin the books. Hope you are doing well!

Great review in the Times.
ABOUT TIME, long overdue.
Now you'll have to come to New York! HA HA.
I just finished Monsters of Men. I am not a young adult, unless you consider 29 young...and I do. My house is a mess, my two children have been neglected and my husband has been complaining about me hiding in the bedroom for the past week reading at any time I could sneak away from responsibility. My brother recommended the series and I'm so happy he did. Thank you so much for the wonderful reading. I'm sure the story will be one that I keep thinking about for weeks to come.
Dear Patrick,
I just read your book A Monster Calls it was absolutely amazing like your other books but made me cry a little. At the moment i am trying to force my librarian to get her to contact you for a school visit and i'm also trying to get all my friends to read your books
Thank you so much for writing these books they have made reading really fun!!:)xx
Hello Patrick.
Just thought you might want to know that I still haven't read the end of Monsters Of Men yet, because I don't want it to be over.
I'm a huge fan of your books, as you can see from my comment 2 years ago. After this long I am still an obsessive fan over them. Something about them does something to me and without sounding too wishy washy, they have changed my life, by making me think about things from a different point of view and see the worl in a different light.
I would like to congratulate you on the films and I hope they will be a great success for you. I certainly hope that they will give these phenomenal books the credit they deserve.
The only thing I'm worried about is the films taking away the imagination and emotion that's created in the books. A film is not the same as shutting yourself away and creating your own little world whilst reading. I still think it is a fantastic opportunity for you, Todd and Viola and I wish you all the best.
Rheo
Hi Patrick, great news on Lionsgate optioning Chaos Walking for the big screen treatment. I hope you get plenty of artistic input, as it is your baby. I think Irish thesp Ciaran Hinds would make a brilliant Mayor Prentiss, and US actor Michael Shannon to play the unhinged Aaron. What does everybody else think?
Hi!
recently I saw you at the cheltenham literature festival, I was the one who asked you about Writers block. you told me to leave a comment on here with my book website so here it is!
www.wix.com/BooksRCool/SkeletonHunters
Did you have to give the film-rights to the company that does "The Hunger Games"?
Everybody starts comparing "Chaos Walking" with them, and that really pisses me off (especially since they put it as if "The Hunger Games" were there first and you copied from them...)
Anyway: Great books! :)
I am 20 pages away from finishing Monsters of Men, and words just cannot express how much this series has changed my life. I know that sounds so weird and maybe a bit cliche but everytime I go to the library and look at books, all I can think about is: "Todd wouldn't do that." or "Viola is so much more bad-ass than her." So with all this extra time from reading, you have inspired me to keep writing. Some people are mad that you have sold the film rights and honestly I am happy. It will give you the fame you deserve for these golden books. I would give my arm and leg and do it for free to be Viola in the movies (as I'm sure every other fan girl of these books would) But even though I know that might not be possible, I know that you WILL make sure these movies will turn out just as you, and all the other fans on here, would want.
Thank you!

Hello Patrick!
I have no idea how this will work at all, all I know is that you're one of my favourite authors. After reading the Chaos Walking trilogy, I kept trying to persuade my friends and family to read them because they were so freaking awe-strikingly original. I actually just wanted to ask for some advice.
I'm only 15, but I've been a wannabe author for around 5 years? I have no idea in which direction my life is going, but by the end of January I have to send an application form off to college applying and telling them which subjects I want to take. And I seem to have no interest in any, apart from English Lit/Lang combined.
So I was wondering; is there anything you'd recommend? How would I go about starting to become the author I want to be? Do you have any advice?
Thanks in advance if you do see this and reply.
-Millie
Hi! Just want to let you know how amazing I think the Chaos Walking series is- I have read it over and over again but it never fails to thrill me! I am really looking forward to the film adaption- is there any information about casting or when it may be in production?
Thank you!
Hi ! It's me (french teenager) for the third time !
I just can't believe it !!! Is it serious ?! There will be a film on The Chaos Walking Trilogy !!!!!!! I'm so excited ! I just screamed out !!!! Wowwwwwww !!
I really really really want to do the french voice of Viola !! Pleaaaaaaaasssssse !!!!! Tell them to do a faviour to your biggest french fan !!!!!
I love you Patrick for saying yes to do this film, love you, love you !!!!!!!! No, I still can't believe it !!!
Send me an e-mail if you have informations for doing the doubling (I don't know if we use that word ^^) Please !
Hi Patrick i am half way through Montsters of Men and it is awesome. So are your other books i have read The Knife of never letting go and The Ask and The Answer. These are some of the best books I have ever read I hope you bring out more along the same lines.
Hi there! I just wanted to say congrats on the Carnegie win for Monsters of Men (which I shadowed with my school) and I'm can't wait for the trilogy becoming a movie! I'm such a huge fan of all your books and when I heard that it was finally becoming a movie, it was terribly exciting c: And not to forget that my friends will finally see how great your books are from the movies so I can convince them to actually read books in general, once in a while!
Mr. Ness, I finalllllllly got my mom to take me to a bookstore so I could get A Monster Calls! I'm so excited!
And I'm even more excited about the possibility of The Knife as a movie! AHHH! Please promise to let us know any/every detail about this as soon as you find them out. I'm so excited!!!
'A Monster Calls' gives us all permission to rage and cry. I bought the book for the illustrations not realising it was for children. I am a long way from being a child. I raged and cried. I passed it on, others did too. Then I saw Chaos Walking and I knew they were for children but bought them anyway. The writing is sublime, the ideas inventive, the new world as brutal and unfair and beautifully optimistic as ours. I reach the end of each out of breath. Again permission to rage. You are a master of your craft. Thank you
Dear Patrick,
I've just sent a copy of BookBrowse's review of A Monster Calls to Tracy at Candlewick. I'm sure a copy will make its way to you soon, but I'd be happy to send a PDF to you directly for your records if you'd like. Thank you and congratulations on your book!
All the best,
Elena
Dear Patrick,
You actually have no idea how incredibly ecstatic I am to find out that you have finally agreed to a film of "The Knife of Never Letting Go."
I know it's early to ask, but do you have any ideas as to when the casting calls will be and where? And will you keep us posted on your blog?
Thank you so much, you're truly amazing xx
Patrick, congrats on the trilogy securing film rights! I really hope this means that your books get more recognition, because they deserve it. That said, I'm really apprehensive about a film adaptation; I just can't imagine any film doing your books justice. And about 70% of the books' brilliance is the almost-poetic prose, and translating that (and many other aspects - like portraying Manchee as more than just your average dog) is going to be really hard. I just hope they're able to portray them in an epic and deserving way. So many film-adaptations (Phil Pullman's Northern Lights and Anthony Horowitz' Alex Rider series, to name but a few) fell flat, and I really hope this doesn't happen to my favourite trilogy!
However, after your deliberation on this, I have faith that you've found the right person to do your books justice!
Hey Patrick!
I'm also writing this message on behalf of my friends who LOVE the Chaos Walking Trilogy too :D
We are SO excited that the books are finally going to be made into a series of films! However, we can't help but worry that lots of important details will be missed out in the film adaptations. We understand that the movies must be kept concise, however we ask you politely to ensure that the films stick to the books as much as possible! Also, as huge fans of the trilogy, we were wondering if there would be any opportunity to appear as extras, or even audition for a part as one of the protagonists? Please let me know! Thanks :)
Hello! I was part of the group of friends who went to see you at Edinburgh book festival and made the t-shirts (mine was the mrs davy prentiss one ;D) and Emma just called me to say that the books are getting made into films and I am ECSTATIC. We're all so happy and can't wait for more news. Ahhhhh! So exciting! I can tell we're all going to get into trouble tomorrow at school from being so excited!
3 words:
OH
MY
GOD.
That is all.
I'm so so so so happy today! Congratulations, for the first time, for the upcoming movie of chaos walking. Hope it will not destroy the books, but I'm sure it won't! I'm so proud, and more people will know you, almost in france, and it is such a good thiiing !!! I can't wait seeing the movie and doing todd, OOPS! ;D
Your biggest french fan forever!
Ben'
Hi! I'm a huge fan of your Chaos Walking trilogy; I couldn't put them down! It's been a long time since I've read such good books as yours. Really, really, excellent writing. Anyway, I wanted to say that I would like to be a writer; I've been writing since the third grade. Never sent anything in or published anything. It's very difficult for me to finish a story because I'm always off on the next idea. I was wondering if you could give me any advice? [Try these out: http://www.booktrust.org.uk/show/feature/WIR-Ness-writing-tips -- PN]
Hi Patrick!
I'm currently reading The Ask and The Answer, I'm totally caught up in the books, even so that I almost forget to work! =) They are very well written and very captivating and sometimes scary, can't wait to read the third book! =)
Hugs, Elenor
Hi!
I read (devour would be a better word) the Chaos Walking trilogy in a week. Although this sounds cliche, I could not put them down. They are one of the best books I read! :)
Lydia.
Hello from Florida!!
I must say that I, too, am a big fan of Chaos Walking Trilogy! I actually picked the first book up on a 7 day cruise and read the whole thing and when we got home, harrassed my husband to buy the other two so I could continue reading it! I have now finished them and want MORE!! I just jumped on here to see if there happened to be another, which I am disappointed :( But happy to see there is a different book from you, which I will go check out!
From a BIG Todd and Viola fan!! Thank you!!
Hey Patrick,
I picked up Knife of Never Letting Go and I couldn't put it down. I finished the trilogy in about a week! EXCELLENT books, I have to admit they are all amongst my favourite dystopian novels of all time. I am a huge fan of your work and look forward to reading anything else you come out with! I hope you do read these comments like you say.
All the best,
Alessandro
Hi Patrick. I just finished reading the third book in the Praise the Chaos Walking series. I was wondering if you were going to make a fourth book.
Hello Patrick!
I am from hungary and i have just finished the ask and the answer (of course in hungarian)
i can't wait fot the last part to be translated!
THIS TRILOGY IS THE BEST I HAVE EVER READ!
Geli
Hi, I like your books!
Hi Patrick
Just finished " A Monster Calls".
Thank you.
Another beautifully written book. I was left sobbing!! I want to read it again and give it some more thought as there is definitely more to that book than just a light read! And I am sure that you achieved your goal and wrote a book that Siobhan would be very pleased with.
Thank you also for the Chaos Trilogy. What is it about those books that is just so different/ and 3 of the best books I ever read. Never read books like it.
Anyway, thanks again and I look forward to more from you.
SB
PS, can you put the "leave a comment" at the top, it took me AGES to scroll through all the comments to get to the bottom to leave my comment!!
Dear Mr. Ness,
I just finished reading Monsters of Men a couple days ago. And I think it's still haunting me. The book's not haunting me in a scary way, exactly, but after reading it, the book really made me think differently. And I believe that I'm going to think differently for a long time, now.
The book was amazing. It really was. But its hard for me to figure out why. Maybe it was because of the way the text was easy to understand - those fragments that accurately represented actual thoughts in text form. Maybe it was the way that everything made sense, but in a way I'd never thought about before, about how maybe the truth isn't as obvious as it always seems to be. Maybe it was simply the fact that a librarian recommended it to me, and that I knew that librarians always give good recommendations. It's probably all of that, actually.
Sometimes I wonder why you wrote the series. A lot of times I wonder how you come up with all these brutal spinning events and shocking betrayals. Did you come up with them from personal experiences? I hope that you write more books, too. Because I've never found and author yet who writes quite like you. I've never encountered a book that reads quite like Monsters of Men.
And even though Monsters of Men takes place in the future, it really made me think about the present. The switching point of view shows all of the different ways that people can react to a single situation, or even person, in this case, when [edited for some spoilers, sorry] It made my opinions waver, and I learned that there aren't a lot of definite things in life - there will always be shades of gray between what is seemingly black and white. The text really sees the goodness and badness of everything in the story. Monsters of Men also made me realize the shades of gray between goodness and badness, too. For instance, when you have two opposing forces fighting against each other, and you think that one side is definitely good, and one side is definitely bad. But later, you begin to question your opinions, because the Mayor [edited again, sorry] there really isn't any goodness or badness anymore, just opposing sides. And all you really want to figure out is which side is better. All you have to figure out is which side is the better choice.
Also, I reflected upon the text in a more personal, emotional level. I could see myself in Todd when he continually lamented over things that werent really his fault, because I worry about the most mundane things, and sometimes I blame it on myself and it really gets me down. I could see myself in Viola when she couldnt figure Todd out, because there are a lot of times when you think you know your friends, but then they go out and surprise you with a hidden talent, and you dont think that you know them all that well anymore. I could even see myself in 1017, even though I didnt really want to, when he really disliked Todd, because I dislike some people when everyone else seems to like them pretty well. Maybe I didn't like those people because I didn't know all that much about them, and I let what I did know about them define who I thought they were, like the little gem of truth repeated within the text: "We are the choices we make."
Do you see, now? Monsters of Men taught me some things, and those things are following me because they are inscribed into my mind. They are ingrained into the way I think. I know things now that I didn't know before. And I appreciate it. I really do.
Sincerely,
Tiffany
Hello!
I love your books. I've devoured The Chaos Walking trilogy and A Monster Calls, and I'm desperate to know what your next project is. When do you think you'll be able to let us know what it is?
Dear Patrick
I've been reading exciting and wonderful books for nearly 40 years, and I've never been moved to write any kind of fan letter before. I feel I must thank you for your fantastic trilogy, Chaos Walking. I read all 3 books on consecutive evenings two weeks ago, and I loved every second spent in your fictional universe. My poor family suffered for this, as for three evenings I was far more interested in your novels than looking after and feeding them! I haven't been so impressed by a young adult novel (or really any adult novel) since The Northern Lights, you have written a beautifully constructed, thoughtful, imaginative and thoroughly exceptional story. Since reading the trilogy, I have already press ganged two friends/relatives into reading them, and you can be sure I will be buying many more copies to force on other unsuspecting candidates. Congratulations on your Carnegie Medal, it is undeniably well deserved, and selfishly, I am so happy to have discovered your work when the trilogy was complete, I would have driven myself insane with expectation if I'd had to wait for each new book. I am already desperate to read whatever you write next.
THANK YOU!
dear patrick
i am 15 years old and by chance picked up the knife of never letting go at the library. i am so fussy about books i thaught id probably read a page or two and put it down but it turned out to be the best book ive ever read (in all of only 15 years that is). as i read it the pictures in my head played out just like a film and i wondered if this might happen? it would be a way to keep fans interested and having just finished monsters of men i am clinging on to the lives of these characters as they are already slipping away from me.i would be impossibly grateful if a film was made to keep the book alive. i am desperate to wipe it out of my head and read it over but since i cant do that i may have to resort to rereading, and i cant think of anything worse...or.....a film!!if there is a film i think the actors should speak with the accent the book is in...is it irish?? if so it doesnt sound quite right an american saying 'ruddy' now does it?
one last thing is that i feel so much suspense at the end of the trilogy and just cant get it into my head that its over!!! i know its like that with all good boks but....um....this one's different? can you scrape out a fourth book, or is it just too complete in your mind? i mean dont write something that you sucked out of your thumb. even if the fourth book was tiny just to give Todd and Viola some closure, which i dont think they have much of.(really brilliant ending though dont get me wrong)
thank you so much for reading my comment if you got to it. i feel so pathetically involved with a book that im actually writing a fan comment. (sorry)
And best of luck with your many, many, many books to come...........
p.s. i am from south africa and although i dont live there anymore i think it would be great if you visited there. i hope your visit was not cancelled due to them bloody visa office people!!! yes the crime is hell of a bad but you can stay QUITE safe if you know what you're doing - stay in doors from 8 oclock on unless in a mall or car etc. Please visit you will love it it is an amazing country, honest i am not a very biased source!
Dear Patrick,
For two years my coworkers have encouraged me to read The Knife of Never Letting Go. I am the buyer for Square Books, Jr., the 8 year-old third store in the historic Oxford, Mississippi square. I have finally read Knife and am halfway through Ask and I cannot wait one more day to implore you to visit Oxford and Square Books.
I know, you don't do many visits in the US, and Candlewick doesn't send many of you around (the books are so good they sell themselves), but, well, we are Square Books.
I am sending the query along to Candlewick with a reminder that another author who was impossible to get and too big for imagination visited us this year, namely Kate DiCamillo. We are a small town, but Square Books itself is an entity and a great venue for title longevity… that is, well, if we like you we will hand-sell you until we die.
Now, thankfully, the fates, Ramona Wanlass, Paul Fyke and myself, Jill Moore, are all head over heels in love with Chaos Walking. So we hereby promise to hand-sell your books for life.
What else do you have planned? Would you be interested in being the Young Authors’ Fair 9th grade Oxford for the annual Oxford Conference for the Book in 2013? We have two authors, one middle grade and one teen author on the OCB YAF panel, and for each the Literacy Council and Junior’s Auxiliary donate nearly 600 copies of the book to the county and city school kids. You get to hobnob with other Oxford pilgrims and I can get you the backdoor tour to the Faulkner house, Rowan Oak. The authors on the line-up for 2012 are James Dashner (who was also ungettable) and Elise Broach (because she’s Kate DiCamillo’s favorite). The distinguished list of other authors who have graced Square Books and participated in the Oxford Conference for the Book is much too long to post.
I have been bookselling for about fifteen years, and have only come across a few novels as poignant and beautiful as yours.
If you are even remotely interested, please mention it to your publicist, or write me back, or send noise indicating so… Until then we are your most faithful booksellers.
Sincerely,
Jilleen Moore

I have a question for the Ask and The Answer. What is the main idea? What is the theme of the story? Why did you write this story? Whats you're favorite character in the story?
Its a wonderful book series by the way. I'm just finished the Ask and The Answer the other day. Keep writing more lovely books.
Hi Patrick,
I was just wondering if you were considering a tour around Asia in the future. I am a teacher at an international school in Malaysia (Plus being a huge fan)and was wondering if you would consider doing a school visit or even just a public book signing.
I read your 'Chaos Walking' books whilst teaching in the UK as part of a Carnegie Book Award shadowing group. I was discussing the series with some of my current students who have now bought them all and are steadily 'devouring' them. They are huge fans of yours and love discussing the series with anyone who will listen. As a result, many of our students are trying to get copies to read, which is a little difficult here as we have to order them in. We are now trying to get copies of 'A Monster calls' so they can continue their 'addiction'.
Please keep up the fantastic work you do as it makes the task of being an English teacher that much easier.
I saw that The Knife of Never Letting Go was released in Brasil, by the name "O Motivo", that literally means "The Reason" (I personally didn't like this tittle). Why didn't you say that your books were going to be published on my country? I almost died! I have been your fan (I think the only one 'round here) since I first read The Knife three years ago, and I can't wait to get A Monster Calls in hands. Reading you even encouraged me to start writing! (ps: btw, I even wrote a fanfiction to Monster of Men; btw, it was posted on fanfiction.net by Duklyon) Now I will read "O Motivo" to see how they translated the fast-paced full-of-accent narration of yours. As soon as I finished reading, I'll post here a comment saying how was it.
Thankyou!
Coral.
(ps: I'm sorry for my bad English - still trying to improve it) =)
Patrick Ness,
I hope you read this- I really do. I want to congratulate you on an amazing series, that touched me in the deepest of ways. I followed Todd since the very beginning,I've laughed, I've fumed and I've cried. I contact you as aspiring young author (15), to tell you how wonderful this book truly is. I really decided to leav a message for you, as I thought it might provide some type of- closure, after such a breath-taking and impactful end to the series. I just can't seem to let Todd go, especially after all the intense emotions you created so beautifully near the end, I'm not going to lie- [edited for spoilers, sorry] anyways, you simply took my breath away, And so- I thank you. I thank you for a thrilling, magical, slap-in-the-face type of series. It was quite an awesome ride, and I'll miss Todd dearly. (and Manchee will always be with me)
-Katie
Hello, Mr. Ness. I am 18 years old, 19 in around 5 days. Your Chaos Walking series has been good to me..
and I am hard to please. I have not read them all, in fact I just started reading the first one last week. I'm almost done with the first, however, and the death of [edited for spoilers, sorry] -- was pretty heart-rending and I when I read it I said, "Oh s**t!" out loud. That Aaron survives way longer than he should, having lots done to him - including losing his nose.
Anyways, before I bore you to death, I would like to tell you to please continue writing. It would make picky readers like myself happier. And do, really, have a good life as much as you can. I wish it for you.
Dear Patrick Ness,
I LOVE and would be a spackle for you.
Your books are AMAZING 5 thumbs up!!!
I would reccomend to everyone but I can't because I want it for myself. The way you leave me hanging on a cliff at the end of a book. BRAVO!! It's like I can see Todd and Viola's relationship of trust growing and growing. I didn't get to read the third book because my school and town library doesn't have it. :( BUT I will READ IT no matter what stands in my way!!!!! :)
Sincerly, Ezra Yun,

Dear Patrick,
I just finished your Chaos Walking trilogy the other day, and I must say that Monsters of Men is the first book that has ever made me cry. Thank you.
Mariah.
Hi !
I've already send a comment on July 11 on The Chaos Walking Books (the french girl) !
I'd like to read your book : A Monster Call !
Is it already published in France? What's the title ? Or is it only published in Germany for now ?
Thank you !
Lise.
Dear Patrick Ness
I am 13 years old and have read your Chaos Walking series with passion two times. I love them to pieces but I cant help feeling cheated, as there's no closure for Todd and Viola.
Would you ever consider writing a 4th book? Or just an epilogue?
Or even a movie, as I reckon, these books are PERFECT movie material. They have EVERYTHING you could ever want from a movie - Action, Love, Comedy, Drama, suspense. The whole lot.
Do you have any merchandise to go with the books?
Rhiannon.
Hi. I am Steve Norman. I am Thirty-Five years old but since my wife left me I have started reading teenage fiction. I really find your books amazing. If you could take a minute to look at my youtube account, maybe even to comment on it or email your thoughts to me, I would be incredibly overwhelmed. It really does mean something to know your hard work is appreciated, as I'm sure you understand.
I just finished Monsters of Men, and I just have to say that it is probably my second favorite series (Harry Potter always comes first) haha. But anyways, I thought The Hunger Games was my second favorite, but after reading Chaos Walking, there was no contest. I can't wait to buy these books (because I got them from my library) and read them over and over. I love your writing style and the major themes that you put into the story. I think you are just brilliant and I will continue to support you in whatever you write. Thanks for a wonderful series. :)
Dear Patrick,
I had not heard of you until I read a very favourable review of 'A Monster Calls' on a blog a few months ago. I finally got my hands on a copy of the book yesterday, and stayed up for two hours last night reading it. It wasn't until I read your introduction that I realised the novel had been adapted from an original idea by Siobhan Dowd. I thoroughly enjoyed Siobhan's novel 'Solace of the Road' and reviewed it as an entry for a competition being held by The Guardian at the time.
What can I saw about 'A Monster Calls'? It was the most compelling, rich, emotional, and really REAL book I have read in a long time. The last two pages had me sobbing uncontrollably - not many books have the power to do that. It made me re-think my priorities in life and enabled me to understand, even just a little, how difficult it is not just for cancer patients themselves, but for the people who get left behind - Conor in this case. It is definitely a subject which needs to be talked about more - not skirted round and avoided by all but the people affected by it.
As an aspiring writer myself I can only say that I hope one day I will have the ability to write with such skill and clarity as you do, and be able to instil in my readers the same emotions that your writing has brought about in me. This novel is a masterpiece - whilst reading I was engrossed in it, so much so that time seemed irrelevant and the story flowed so continually that the pages flew by without a second glance from myself. I will certainly be reading your other works and look future to your future writings.
Wishing you the very best with everything,
Alexandra
Dear Patrick,
I just finished reading A Monster Calls and just had to let you know how much I loved it. A beautifully written book, great story, so so sad but wonderfull at the same time. Now I want to read your chaos walking trilogy......thankyou for such a good read.....Lesley Eman
My daughter Lauren (12 yo) absolutely adores your books.
All I hear is Todd this and Viola that. I love the way she is so passionate about these books. Is there any merchanise (other than your books) I can purchase for her?
hey
absolutely love your books - at the age of 21 they are my absolute favourite books (well - apart from winnie the pooh - but hey...)
my sister and i are such huge fans of the chaos walking trilogy and between us we have decided that if there was ever a movie (or series) to be made of them, then the perfect soundtrack would be songs from Noah and the Whale's album 'last night on earth' - the lyrics and style resonate so amazingly with the books that i cant think of one without the other!
can't wait for the 4th book ;p x
"Bonjour" Dear Mr Ness !
Let me introduce myself quickly ... My name is Clementine, I'm 16 years and I am a French girl. I'm here 'cause I wanted to tell you that I like a lot the Chaos Walking Trilogy, which is a part of my favorites books. I read the last book yesterday, and I found it GREAT, really !
For the little history : I found the first book some time ago. I saw him all the time when I went to the library, but I never borrowed it. However it attracted me a lot, and I do not really know how I arrived to read the summary and borrowed it without asking more questions than that to myself. It was like a revelation : at the beginning I felt a little lost in your world, but I could not stop reading. When I finished the first book, the only thing I was waiting for was the second volume. When it was finally out, and I finally have it, I was so happy. And I loved it so much that I was waiting for the last book... I wait a long time, and finaly... I got it !! And I have finished it yesterday. And I feel a little sad in my heart now ...
So I wanted to say that I really love what you do and I look forward to reading another book from you (if I find it !) Your words made me dream, they carried my mind abroad and let me tell you that when I was reading Monsters of Men, I just can't leave the book ! I leave it while I was eating, that's all.
And sorry for my English, I don't speak very well...
PS : the photo of you with the robot in Tokyo ... Do you know Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's films ? I grew up with their animation films!
So goodbye, and I hope to read your books soon as possible.
Clem'
Hey Patrick,
Your books are amazing, well so far the ones i've read! The chaos walking series is phenomenal! I enjoy reading your books! Keep up the amazing book writing skills!
hey!

it sucked when i finished them cause i was like 'well, know. what am i gonna do now?' so i .... erm, read them again ....
you're an insainly talented author and i would love to live in your head and to see what you imagin happens next!
thankyou - the last few days have been the best in my holiday :D
~Lucy
Hello,
I just finished the final book in the Chaos Walking Series, but here's the thing, I was 18 pages in and I spend from 7:30 am to 4 pm reading your book, I couldn't put it down until I reached the end. It is tied for the best book I have ever read. You use of detail and character conflict in mesmerizing. I thought I would never cry as hard as I did when Ma[edited for spoilers, sorry], but then came the third book. I wish I could just spill out everything this book is to you so that you could have a better understanding about how much I enjoyed it. I have notes that I've kept that I've written to friends on of them inculde some very nasty words directed at the mayor. Your books are powerful, thats the closest I can get to telling you how much I love your writing. Bye!
Mr. Ness,
i just finishe reading the Chaos Walking trilogy and am absolutly in love. The characters are absolutly brilliant and the plotline was amazing! But the ending left me hanging! I am dying so badly to find out how it all really ends for Todd and Viola! I need some closure. I would love love love- Scratch that, I am down on my knees BEGGING you to write an epilouge! I would worship you for years and years to come if you did. I am dying for some closure for Todd.
Yours Truly,
A. Reno
Hi Patrick!
I saw your event at the Edinburgh Book Festival a week ago, discussing A Monster Calls, and had my book signed after. It was fantastic, insightful and lovely to hear how encouraging you are of young writers.
I just wanted to reassure you that, although I didn't have my book dedicated, that's not becuase I'm going to throw it to the wolves of Ebay or the like; I just find dedications a slightly funny thing and was quite happy without my name in the book.
Cheers!
Jonny
patrick,
i just finished the chaos walking series and i loved them! they are honestly one of my favorite series now. i loved all of the books however i think it would be really cool if you came out with an epilogue, since i feel like the ending didnt give enough closure. [edited for spoilers, sorry] other then that, the series was fantastic and i loved reading them.
Hi Mr. Ness
I have read more than a hundred books in my fifteen years but no books have ever kept me awake the whole night like the Chaos Walking series did. I really enjoyed them and I know I'm going to be reading them over and over again and they will never get old! You're my favorite and most amazing author in the world!!
Dear Mr. Ness (hehe, formal..)
I want to let you know that I adore your series, and that I'm getting all my friends up here in the great Canadian wilderness to read it. I've gone through books like crazy since I was 5 (I'm 16.7 or so now), and honestly, I've read so many that I don't remember much about a lot of them. After reading The Knife of Never Letting Go for the first time last summer, I've reread the series half a dozen times, and I don't think I'll ever forget about them. Your series is so different and new and exciting. It is beyond heartbreaking. I'm not weepy, but I'll admit that I cried multiple times during all 3 books. I've fallen in love with your characters and your world. Thank you.
Hey Patrick,
I've written on the 'Visitors' page a few times now since reading The Knife Of Never Letting Go back in 2008, however I still cannot find the words to describe your work. Over the past couple of years, i've read countless books, however the three books which make up the Chaos Walking trilogy still remain my favourite novels so far, and I doubt their position is going to change soon. I've managed to persuade a small number of friends to read your books (they all loved them!) and so hopefully in the future the trilogy will be widely recognised! I'd also like to congratulate you on A Monster Calls. I don't tend to enjoy 'easy' books, but I thought the simplicity of the novel somehow enabled me to relate to the characters more.
You've been a great inspiration, keep writing.
Saphia
I have loved the Chaos walking trilogy, they are some of the best books I have ever read. Very deeply moving and a pleasure to read.
Hi :)
Just wanted to say i have read hundreds of books but the chaos walking trilogy are by far the best books i've ever read. Loved the way you can make it so easy to relate to the characters. Thank You :D
Dear Patrick,
I just finished reading your chaos walking books this morning! They were a fantastic read, thanks so much for some great entertainment!
My favourite character was Davy Prentiss, i'm not sure why, but he was just really sweet the way he was so confused about what he really wanted, it was really sad [edited for spoilers, sorry].
I also loved Manchee! I was really angry when you killed him off and I was reading that particular bit on holiday in spain, and I started crying uncontrolably, and my dad wondered what was wrong with me! I understand now that it would have been difficult to find a role for him in the next few books, and so I forgive you.
Thanks again for the wonderful books, I really enjoyed them, is there going to be another book?
Also, are Ben and Cillian gay? I never really understood why they were together until 1017 said "The source's one in particular," ... I have no problems with it or anything, it's just I wouldn't have expected that kind of thing to be allowed with Aaron around!
Best Wishes,
Emma
Just read your book 'A Monster Calls' last night! A moving story with fantastic illustrations that made me fill up at the end!
Congratulations brilliant story telling that all ages should read, as cancer touches everyones lives!
Hey Mr. Ness,
I've recently read A Monster Calls, and I would just like to say I love how your writing hooks me in...I couldn't put it down and afterwards it made me very sad. I love the the drawings that accompanied the book, and they helped alot with visualising the story.
Once again, you've truly done some amazing work.
Good luck with your writing and I can't wait for more,
Emily Z
your first three chaos walking books were amazing:) will there be a fourth book to the series?
Dear Patrick,
I have been reading your Chaos Walking series since the Ask and the Answer came out, and I received both the first and second books to read. I devoured the first book, amazed at how relatable Todd was, how you made me, as a reader, attached to the characters, and how uniquely written it was. It was amazing to me as well how you made the scene with Aaron and Manchee (don't want to give it away) so emotional and heartbreaking. The second book was just as unique and interesting, for the new characters, new landscape, and new tone was ideal for the second installment. Your depictions of certain events were so descriptive and so vividly written. After the end of the second book, I just simply couldn't wait until September for Monsters of Men, so I made a point to get it in Edinburgh when I went with family. I think you are a very skilled writer, and I will certainly read anything that you write in the future (for example A Monster Calls, which I will read once it is released in the US -- my excitement has only been increased by the rave reviews). I read a fair bit of books, but no book or series has held my attention and devotion quite like Chaos Walking. Thank you for writing such magnificent books, and please continue doing so in the years ahead -- I know I'll read them!
Hello:)
I just wanted to say how amazing the Chaos Walking Trilogy was to read. I think the third book was my favourite as i was constantly wondering what was going to happen next! I cried countless times through the whole series and especially at the very end. I am still sort of hoping you will write a fourth book?! And it would be amazing if the books were made into films!:D
Hi Patrick
I just finished A Monster Calls this second, and I had to write to you. I still have a lump in my throat. Not only does it look beautiful, but the story tucked in between the illustrations is so persistent. It pulls you along page after page, screaming at you to finish, to find out how it all ends, to find out how one boy can possiblby take so much and come out the other end! A reading experience that will stay with me for a long time...
Thanks for letting the Monster speak.
Julianna
Hi Patrick Ness
I was wondering what kind of clothes Todd and Viola would wear?
What did you imagine them wearing? Colour, material, brand?
You know stuff like that.
Thanks
P.S even though i finished the Chaos Walking series a long time ago, it is still in my head :3
Dear Mr Ness,
I've just finished A Monster Calls. Thank you.
I've not finished a book in tears for 30 years.
Again, thank you.
Graham Wood
I have commented here once before, and have come back for another question. One question, probably so simple and boring that you will be wholly disappointed by my comment.
i was wondering, after your talk on dystopias at the edinburgh book festival on the 21st of August, will you be signing books? i look forward to seeing you talk there with or without signings afterwords, but a signature from on of my favourite authors - note the persuasive flattery ;) - would be amazing! thanks for reading and keep up the great work! i hope to purchase 'a monster calls' sometime in the not so distant future.
Hiya, Mr. Ness!
I'm the 17 year-old kid whom everyone thinks is weird because he reads FOR FUN. The one who loves adventure more than anything, and is irritated by how so many people around me are absorbed in senseless things like gang violence and what's the coolest thing out. Yeah, that's me.
I just wanted to thank you for writing the Chaos Walking Trilogy. I'm always on the look out for new books ( and Rubik's cubes, and throwing knives, and all those things that make me the unusual teen I happen to be) and I'm not easily impressed. Honestly, I didn't want this series to end.
Every day would be an internal argument with myself, both wanting to finish it and not wanting it to end. But all good things must come to an end, eh?
I'll definitely be forcing my friends to begin reading this indescribable series. And I'm more than positive that they'll be just as in love with it as me.
I can go on and on with my nonsense of telling you how much your books inspired me, got me thinking, and all the things you probably hear daily about your work. But I wouldn't want to be much of a bother.
Heh, as soon as I finished Monsters Of Men, I looked all over the whole ruddy internet for any type of Chaos Walking accessories for sale. Too bad I couldn't find any! I finished it as I was laying in the trunk of my mom's van (don't worry, it's one of those really big/open trunks that are exposed to the rest of the car) driving home from Wisconsin. You think war makes monsters of men? Try traffic, hehe.
My bestbestbest regards and wishes to you, and you may contact me whenever if you should ever feel like it.
- Whirler Boy, Eric
(Waves to Patrick and Robot)
Dear Mr. Ness,
I just finished the Chaos Walking Trilogy. Monsters of Men has become only the sixth book I've ever read that made me cry but the first book that ever made me cry twice. After I finished it, I literally couldn't move for five minutes. Just sat with my hands over my face, letting the tears spill over and over.
Thank you for writing such brilliant books. I have never read anything like them.
Nicole
Hi Patrick
I emailed you after reading The Knife of Never Letting Go in September 2008 to say how much I really enjoyed it, in spite of being over 60. I have now discovered the audio version and I have to say the experience has got even better, if that were possible. The reader was so well chosen. I think he did a great job on a great book. I love his accent and his personalisation of Manchee was brilliant! It’s brought another perspective to the book. Thank you for not one but two different but fantastic experiences. A reader can ruin a good book by not “living” the book but I think Humphrey Bower injects real passion to your fab story.
I am looking forward to having the same experience with your other brilliant books, The Ask and the Answer and Monsters of Men, since I now have them both in audio and book formats!
This series of books is one of my all-time favourites along with Harry Potter, Philip Pullman’s Dark Materials, Narnia and The Lord of the Rings.
You have great talent and I feel privileged to be able to share your imagination.
All the best.
Eileen Kenny
jus thought i would tell you that i cried ( shut up ) when Manchee died. and your style infected me and now i write like Todd. so happy now?
im joking of course, but they are very good books.
hey patrick i was wondering if you were thinking about writing another series or some more books to wrap up the story of chaos walking because im DYING of curiosity of whether or not [edited for spoilers, sorry] please write another im truly a big fan and i would hate for a wonderful story such as this left without a proper end
sincerely, Jack
Okay so I only begun reading the knife of never letting go when my friend told me to read it after she accidentally bought it at the bookstore because the cover looked interesting. Holy shit the book was amazing and I couldn't wait to read the second and the third. I read the first one in one day straight. Honestly, unlike other writers who gives their book SO much details but no story at all, it gets boring. I never thought I would have liked the book at first because of the 'informayshun' and such but no I didn't like it. I loved it and I also love Manchee. Is there any way to bring him back?
I have just finished your Chaos Walking Trilogy, and I don't think I have ever read anything more amazingly mind-blowing! Thank you for writing such incredible books! And please write a sequel to the Chaos Walking Trilogy! (sorry, I know you must hear that a lot!)
Also I have heard about a prequel to the series - The New World? Is this book available to buy?
Thanks again,
Anna :) (13)
Hey Patrick
Just wanted to say I'm super amped that you're coming to SA!!!
And even better... CAPE TOWN!!
Super cool.. Took you long enough though :p
K, hope to see you here soon
...Tash...
My name is james and i have just finioshed reading the chaos walking trilogy i used to hate books but after reading thefirst sentence of your book i couldnt put it down if you are making a movie please tell me id love to know and if you even consider it i would love to play Todd
Hi Patrick,
I just wanted to let you know that I just finished reading "Monsters of Men" and I absolutely loved it. But I have to admit, there were moments in the book, that became more frequent towards the end, where I honestly felt a strong hate for you for making me cry so much! The characters... Todd especially - I never thought I could feel so emotionally attached to someone fictitious! Your Chaos Walking trilogy was so amazing yet heartbreaking and so real and just... I really can't describe what I feel. But thank you SO much for just getting the story down on paper. I think you are a fantastic author and I am definitely going to continue reading your books - as long as you continue to write!
Thank you again,
Maya
Hey Patrick
I read your books a while ago (beginning of this year) and I have to say that they are possibly the best books I've ever read. I literally wasn't able to put them down.
I was wondering if you were having any thoughts of getting a movie made? It would be so amazing so it's just a suggestion.
All the best,
Kyle
Hey Patrick,
I read your book A Monster Calls a few weeks ago and since then I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. It was so beautifully written and so shockingly real the I literally couldn't put it down. I'm a pretty big reader but I don't think I have ever read a book that affected me as much as A Monster Calls did. It's probably one of the best books I have ever read. So, I guess I just wanted to say thanks for writing such an amazing book. Keep up the good work :)
Maddy
Lol I'm crying now;D You're my idol... like I read the Chaos Walking series and I cried when it ended. I was also thinking that if you ever made a movie to this, besides dying, I think I'd need to be Viola. Because you have no idea what I'd do to get that part. I love acting and writing. And I write sort of like you now, but its more me, like carefree. My english teacher complimented me for that so I told her to thank Patrick Ness, aha(:
seriously though, you needa tell me if they make a movie of this trilogy. I used to love the Inkheart trilogy. I personally think they ruined the movie. Dont let them ruin your bookDx You deserve the best, that's what I think. Oh yeah, I may be your biggest fan ahaha... I just cried because I found your website-__-
anyways, with love,
Kim!

Greets
Janet
[Hi, Janet - there won't be a fourth book in the series, sorry, but my new book will be out in Germany on 26 August, called "Sieben Minuten nach Mitternacht" - and of course you can come to Edinburgh; tickets are really cheap and available on the Edinburgh Book Festival Website]
Patrick,
Hi. The Chaos Walking Trilogy was brilliant---planning a fourth book?
I might not be the only one, but I think Mayor Prentiss' way of controlling men--using Noise as a lever--was very clever indeed. But what if music was introduced as a way of controlling people?
Just a thought.
Best wishes,
Mitch
Hi Patrick,
By chance I stumbled onto "A Monster's Call" while wondering through the mall. To be honest Im not much of a reader, but my partner (also named Patrick) and our daughter had gone to see family in NY so I had some free time on my hands. Your book affected me in more ways than I could have imagined and cant stop thinking about it.
Im wondering if the option has been picked up on the project for the movie rights? As I really think it has the potential for a great movie.
Jason
Dear Mr. Ness,
Hi, my name is Rachel! I absolutely love your Chaos Walking trilogy, I get in trouble for reading them in class alot, because I don't pay much attention to anything else. I have all three books, including the prequel on my kindle, and read them every day! I know you live in the UK, so it might be difficult, but I was wondering, if you ever make a movie out of them, do you think you could give me a heads up? I'm very interested in Viola Eade and have made up many little novella/idea pages about her (For my own personal entertainment, I promise!). I would love to try out for her if I ever get the chance. If you would like to read a few of my stories, or just chat, feel free to email me! Thank you for reading this, it means a lot.
hiya!
i absolutley love your books, the Chaos walking series left me speechless on the edge of my seat and i have recommended the books to everyone i know. So far i know that they are enjoying them just as much as i did! After reading some of the other comments i noticed that basicly all of them are complimenting the series whole heartedly...but seriously, they are the best books i have EVER read! How do you get your inspiration for your books...any tips?!
thanks!
ps. im itching to read a monster calls after looking at all the fantastic reviews and stunning German trailer!
Dear Patrick, I have just finished reading A Monster Calls. I don't know whether to smack you or hug you! It was awesome and heartbreaking at the same time. My sister died of cancer a few years back and it felt like she was on every page. It is a whirlwind of emotions between two covers, but made me think long and hard about everything that happened to her and her family. This is definitely a book I will recommend to families having to face situations like this, especially to young people who are confused and angry about it.
You are amazing! Don't stop being you.
Pat
Hi Patrick. I heard you talking on Front Row a couple of weeks ago and I wanted to let you know about a project we're developing. At a time when libraries are closing, bookshops are shutting their doors and pages are going on-line we're working towards creating a performance and visual arts piece celebrating books and bookshops. At this stage we are collecting peoples stories about their books and why they're so important. You can see out call-out and read some of the tales that have been submitted at bookshopstories.co.uk If you would like to email me I can tell you about where the project is headed in more detail.
many thanks
Malcolm
Hi
I really like your books and I've got one question.
Would your books be avalible in other languages?
Because I would love to read them in Polish as well as english.
Thanks very much
Joanna C.
[Hi, Joanna - It's available in a number of languages, but not Polish yet, I'm afraid; Soon, I hope, though! I'll say so here if and when - PN]
Hi !
I'm a french teenager (I'm 15) and I read the french version of "The Chaos Walking" ! I love it, really ! All of them made me cry. The first one is my favourite because there are this feeling of insecurity, so much discovery, and the fact that they are on the run (and I like the chase with Aaron too). It is interesting how all the characters change in the second book, particularly Davy. I like how the relationship between Todd and the Mayor change in the last book, in fact I like how all the relationships change. The third voice in the last book is so poetic and made me change the vision of the events. I enjoyed how the Noise was different as time goes by. Every words, every events is well chosen and that makes a breathtaking story. Although, the end tortures me ! When I finished reading it I was writting on papers "I am the circle and the circle is me" (in french of course), "Manchee" and so on. I can't imagine that I won't read and feel Viola's and Todd's adventures again so you have to make sure somebody will do a film (or several). I was deeply moved by your trilogy and I feel like no other book will be able to equalize what this trilogy offered me.
Well done !
Lise.
I absolutly LOVE your books! I have just finished the third book in the chaos walking series, please please write a fourth book because i love them and i wish i hadn't read them so fast now. You came to talk at our school a little while ago and you were really good. Thank you and please write a fourth book about Todd and Viola!!
Patrick Ness,
About a year ago, I finished the Chaos Walking trilogy. Ever since then, I've been waiting for you to make it into a series, rather than a trilogy. You haven't done it yet. I don't know about you, but many kids my age are hoping to have at least one more book to the Chaos Walking group. They are all so good, and I think you just can't go wrong writing another one. Please do.
~Isabella
Hello! =D
First off i hope the length of this doesn't discourage reading it. Haha I'd just like to say you are by far the best author i have ever....jussst gahhh your awesome! The Chaos Walking series has me addicted i have read all 3 books at least 9 times each, and every time i am on the edge of my seat, and i just refuse to put down the book. Now despite how this may sound i'm not some kid who sits in his room and reads all day. Lol but i would like to happily tell you that i have recommended tremendously this Trilogy to EVERYONE that i know. Now i understand your thoughts on ending the series there it's a great ending......it's just i need closure!! Haha i mean even just an e-mail saying an ending would be enough although a few more books would be greatly appreciated. Well i'd just like to let you know that you are a personal hero of mine and i hope one day i could meet you!!!
Sincerely,
Brandon
Hello. I originally found "The Knife of Never Letting Go" on a list of good books to read, and I have to be honest- I thought it was a different book so I put it on my list of books I HAVE to read this summer. Once it came in at the library I wasn't too sure it'd be something I liked. And I was/ am right. I didn't like it- I loved it! :)
I read through the first book in four days then "The Ask and the Answer" in three! I finished "Monsters of Men" last night and for a few minutes I was really angry at you!! So much stuff was happening to Todd and Viola! But I really liked the end. :)
It's hard for me to find futuristic book series that I truly love. And I will make sure to tell all my friends about it, but not too many people because then it'll get really popular and they'll try to make a movie out of the books and it'll be horrible. :P
Thanks for writing such amazing books! I'm really depressed that they're over, especially because now I have to start on my Brit Lit summer reading. I don't think "Brave New World" is going to be amazing as "The Ask and The Answer". :(
I hope you keep writing amazing books because you are really good at it!!!
Mr. Ness,
Hi. I've read all three of the Chaos Walking books, and I think that they are really something! The way that all the characters introduce themselves to the reader is extremely unique. In my opinion (and I might not be the only one) Mayor Prentiss is my favorites character.
And all the details with the Noise---it makes one wonder, what would it really be like, having Noise? Ever considered making the trilogy into films?
Best,

hello there
i just wanted to let you know how important i think 'a monster calls' is. i had a train journey ahead of me and bought it at the station, thinking i would flick through as the pictures looked fantastic and my 13 year old son has read all your other books describing you as a writer unlike any other he's read, thinking i was buying it for him. well 2 hours later I was at my destination, sitting on the train in floods of tears, re-reading those last few pages for their simply stated poignancy. such a perfect treatment of the harrowing nature of self blame in the grief of a child I don't think I shall ever read. I really am still so moved and really wanted to congratulate you, all 3, on telling this so flawlessly. if we could all have a giant monster walk to our aid in times of great need.... well, now we have this wonderful book to offer. bless you for it
x
I read the chaos walking trilogy after a friend suggested it to me and after the first chapter I was hooked.I really enjoyed the story of Todd and Violas adventures and I was hoping to know if you were ever planning on writing another book with them because I would really love to know what happens next on new world
Dear Patrick
I have just finished A Monster Call, and I feel compelled to leave a message; to at least try and articulate how great this book was.
I am sobbing, because my father died recently and I find myself wishing there had been a yew tree monster there at the time to help me see the truth of how I felt. I need to say this, I am no teenager and still the feelings that came through this book are exactly mine, and damn it I have just spent the longest of time just denying them: the fear of loss, the "what about me", the "I don't want you to leave". And all of a sudden, your wonderfully written book has shaken me so much- and I mean it in the most positive way - that I can't even stop crying with the relief of it. So thank you, thank you a million times for such a powerfully written story. I will treasure it for as long as I live and will pass it on to my son -together I might add, with the Chaos Walking trilogy- and everyone else I know.
Warmest Regards
Francesca
Hi Patrick,
I love your books(:
The chaos walking is defenetly one of my favorite series! Are you wrighting a fourth book? Please please please? Oh my god the questions!
heyy mr ness:
i play guitar and i was wondering if i could do a choas walking song and put it on youtube? but i need your permission otherwise they will delete my video of youtube.
thank you and keep up the good work! :D
[Hi, Emily - a song would be great, you don't need permission if the song's just inspired by the books - lots of people do that; it's only permission if you use exact words from the books and all that; it'd be cool to hear it -- PN]
Are you making book 4 in chaos walking series?
Please do
Dan
Hi Patrick - Very many congratulations on your Carnegie win and on your magnificent defence of the importance of libraries and librarians. Looking forward to meeting you at Edinburgh. All good wishes, Moira
So glad you won the Carnegie. Your books are wonderful ... your thank you speech about the need for libraries just as wonderful. I urge everyone to follow your link and read this too. Maybe an army of the best writers of children's books regularly show-casing their work at libraries will make the Government see that, for so many, libraries are where it all begins ... Moxy
Hi Patrick,
A friend told me about you, I became a reader of your diary and a consumer of news about your books. is there any chance that your books may be found in portuguese in the next times?
All the best,
Jos
Dear Patrick
I was so happy your book won the carnigie book awards this year. I had read the knife of never letting go, and the ask and the answer.
Please write more books in the series as they are amazing and i love the reletion ship between todd and viola!!!
Love
Rebecca xxxxxxxx
Hey Patrick!
We met at Mr B's a week or so ago, thank's for the fantastic evening! Just wanted to say I read 'A Monster Calls' and cried like a baby, it was great, no other book has ever done that to me. I can't wait to start reading the 'Chaos Walking' Trilogy.
Thanks for the book,
Jess :D
Hi Patrick. I just wanted to say congratulations on winning the Carnegie - it's well deserved, especially after being shortlisted for the first 2 books the last 2 years. I love the Chaos Walking trilogy, and we have some hardcore fans here at Fernwood. I've been running the Shadowing scheme again this year, and we made some film trailers, including an awesome one for Monsters of Men!
I don't know if you remember coming to Fernwood School, in Nottingham, a couple of years ago. Anyway, I know you'll be in more demand than ever now for visits, but if you ever have a free slot, we'd love to get you here again!
Dear Patrick,
i am a HUGE fan of yours. I just finished Monster of Men and it was wonderful. I could not put all three of the books down. Have you ever considered making the books into movie? It has such a good story line that it would be an amazing movie. Another question is: is there going to be a 4th book? I hope so.. i never want them to end
a huge fan,
Taylor
Patrick Ness,
I don't even know where to begin. Your Chaos Walking trilogy really leaves me breathless. I wanted to cry so much when I finished Monsters of Men on Saturday. (the 25th..I believe.) But I couldn't, because I was out camping with my family though we were driving around in the car, and I didn't want to explain to them why I was getting so emotional over a book.
I'm just so sad. So sad the series has ended. You're brilliant, Mr. Ness, really you are. So brilliant, and I respect you so much. You deserve every thing great.
For a moment, at the end of Monsters of Men, I do admit I did want to physically hurt YOU because of the endless horrible thing after horrible thing that kept knocking Todd and Viola down.
And then of course, when [edited for spoilers, sorry] and my heart slowed down to a semi-normal pace.
But really, it's so rare I find a book that leaves me wanting to cry so much and wishing there were another five hundred more pages to read. Your writing and all your characters get me so emotional and ugh you're just awesome okay, haha. Thank you thank you thank you for writing books that will forever be apart of my childhood.
Dear Patrick
HUGE Congratulations on winning the Carnegie! Very very happy for you, couldn't have happened to a greater guy! Waiting very impatiently for your new book, and I hear you will be in SA soon. YAY!!!!!
Best wishes
Pat
Hi Patrick
I was wondering if you had already relised your book The new world as i have been searching amazon for the book for hours now and have not yet come across it. if not may you tell me the realise date for england (london) as i have been none stop reading your books and now have ran out, and realised without them i am extremly bored!!!
Dear Patrick, Many, many congratulations on winning the Carnegie Medal. And many, many more for your important speech about the vital importance of libraries. All good wishes, Anne
Dear Patrick
Firstly Congratulations on your latest award, and also on your acceptance speech. School librarians in Australia watch as teacher librarians around the world are disappearing, and especially in government schools here, with horror and dismay, in the shortsighted attempt at costcutting, while researching how to improve literacy and general academic outcomes.
But I have just finished A Monster Calls and that is the impetus for writing tonite. I was incredibly moved - more so than for any book for a long time. Once again, words are inadequate. It felt that you were writing for one person and for so many at the same time, and I hope you never stop writing.
Very best wishes
Judith Wakeman
Just read your Carnegie Medal speech - fantastic. I have to admit that Monsters and Men is still on my 'to read' list - now it's moved itself up to next!
Great to hear you're a regular at our library! Us staff members were quite excited when our colleague told us about meeting you yesterday. Many thanks for your support.
I'm monstorously pleased that you were awarded the Carnegie Medal. Well deserved. I ran into work yesterday and had to look it up before doing any actual, well, work. I could claim it was work related as I buy copies of The Knife and give them as rewards to my patients when they come in for their physicals. I work with medically under served youth in Dallas and have been doing this for over a year to help encourage literacy. It must work because every one of the kids who return in a year have sought out, and read the rest of the series. I have all given it to all five of my daughters, their husbands and boyfriends, and several other friends. People who tell me they never read have fallen in love with your books.
I believe your writing is evocative, exciting, joyous, and beautiful, all while remaining accessible. You are definitely one of my "top shelf" authors.
Llongyfarchiadau, or congratulations as they say in England, for winning the Carnegie. As one of the offical bloggers at the Hay Festival I thought I'd pop along and see you and David Almond, and was charmed and excited. I immediately read A Monster Calls, and it was beautiful, and I cried, of course. As Librarian of Hay-on-Wye I'd like to thank you for your thoughtful defence of libraries and librarians, and, it's true, I know everything.
I have shelved The Trilogy many times, and now shall read it. Thank you x
Hey Patrick,
Mazeltov on winning the Carnegie. Well deserved and its great to see how many people just love your books. Hope to see you soon.
Nick
Good afternoon Patrick and congratulations on winning the CILIP Carnegie Award. I was privileged to be at BAFTA to hear your speech first hand and what a speech it was.
Whilst it was also great to see the Braille copy being presented to you by RNIB, i would just like to take this chance to inform you that i work for the National Blind Children's Society where we produce large print copies of many popular fiction, non-fiction and educational titles including the Chaos trilogy tailored to the exact requirements of the children’s eye condition. In fact nearly all of the shortlisted books are now available to children with vision difficulties via our charity. Once again congratulations and keep up the good writing. regards Nigel
Many many congratulations on the Carnegie Prize for Monsters Of Men, Patrick. Really deserved for such a terrific finish to that great trilogy.Maith thu! (= Well done! - in Irish)
Karl O'Neill
Hi Patrick.
I was at the Mr B's evening the other day and really wanted to thank you for your great advice during the interval and your generous and varied signings of 5 of your books!
Also, I love the photo on the left; I have an almost exact copy from my visit to Japan 3 years ago. I definitely thought there was a Studio Ghibli films vibe going on when I first read the Chaos Walking trilogy. Possibly not coincidence after all... :)
Many congratulations on winning the Carnegie as well.
All the best,
Francis.
Just read the fabulous news about your selection as the 2011 Carnegie Award recipient. Congratulations -- and much deserved!! Also, thanks for taking on the challenge of writing A MONSTER CALLS . . . a timely book that left me weeping and in awe of how you tapped the heartbreak and heartache of loss . . . and the need for letting go. Now with this big award, you'll probably never get back to Washington State to visit. If you do, we'll gladly gather a book-loving group to raise a toast in your honor. Once again, CHEERS!
Mmmh... Isn't it the website of an amazing writer and an amazing man, who won Carnegie Medal 2011. Yes It IIIS! =D
Standing ovation for Misteeeeer Patriiiiick NEEEES =D
Again congrats and thanks!!
Your biggest french fan 4EVER!!

Dear Patrick
Many congratulations on your Carnegie award today. I didn’t get to say hi there, but wanted to say how much I like A Monster Calls - a stunning book!
Best
Mike
Hi Patrick,
Was great to see you again at Mr B's last week. CONGRATULATIONS on the Carnegie win and on your brilliant speech on libraries - wonderful!
Clare
Congratulations on winning the Carnegie prize and thank you for being so supportive of libraries and librarians :)
Hello! :)
I saw about a month back at the Hay Festival - I was the "uncomfortable stare" girl - and you were absolutely FAB!
The Chaos Walking Trilogy is the BEST series of books EVER!! One of my friends got me The Knife of Never Letting Go for my birthday when it was first out and it was the best present ever! :D I recommended it to all my friends and they love it too!
My mum and I both read A Monster Calls (she stole my copy!) and we sobbed for about half an hour when we finished. It was brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, BRILLIANT! I loved it to pieces and my mum did too - she cried even more than me!
And CONGRATULATIONS ON WINNING THE CARNEGIE! The judges finally saw sense! Our school and about 12 others did a shadowing event and I was in the Monsters of Men group (I was Mistress Coyle) :) It was so much fun!!! I hope you write more soon, I can't wait to read more of your writing :)
Sophie :D
Congratulations on the Carnegie award, Patrick! You really deserved it!
It was great meeting you and you're speech - well, I'll never forget it.
Thanks for signing my book!
Ella :)
CONGRATULATIONS ON WINNING CARNEGIE! Really well deserved and all our kids here will be so delighted when I tell them. Hope you will be able to come to St John's during WBD week next March as I thought you were brilliant at Mr B's bookshop last Thursday evening.
Congratulations again, crack open the champagne!
Anne
Dear Patrick
I've just learned that you've won the Carnegie Medal for Monsters of Men. May I offer you my heartiest congratulations? What fantastic recognition of your incredible work. You must be absolutely over the moon!
(BTW,I absolutely loved the Chaos Walking trilogy. Stunning stuff.)
With very best wishes

(humble fellow novelist)
Congratulations on the Carnegie Medal 2001...you join some illustrious writers of course, and I root for one of them, sadly dead now, a close relative! (www.rosemarysutcliff.com)
Hi Patrick,
as I reader I loved your Chaos Walking series. As an aspiring writer (35,000 words and counting) I was slightly terrified but inspired about the level of depth that this readership deals with.
Do you do any master classes or workshops for people like me? Or would you have any recommendations or top tips? I'm doing a creative writing class at the moment. Most of my classmates want to be Tolstoy, so it would be good to understand/share ideas with people wanting to write for similar genre.
I'm based in Reading but as I'm from Edinburgh originally we're planning to go up for the literary festival, I will try and catch your talk (realise this is making me sound like a wannabe stalker but you don't need a restraining order just yet ;-)).
Really appreciate any help, Sally
PS where can I get a giant robot as its the perfect accessory for my back garden?:-)
Hi Patrick,
You may not be aware of it but I have been given your book, Monsters of Men, to review and decide whether it is worthy of a CILIP Carnegie Medal. I am a 13 year old boy who goes to Valentines High School and have been given this book by the school. If you would like to read my review please use the following link:
http://www.carnegiegreenaway.org.uk/grouphomepages/index.php?GroupID=389
Then simply scroll down to our reviews.
I would be glad to hear back from you, Prem.
Here is my review, incase the link doesn't work:
I am reviewing Patrick Ness’s Monsters of Men. Monsters of men is the climax of Patrick Ness’s sensational ‘chaos walking’ saga. It is a thrilling read full of clever twists and jaw dropping turns. There is no doubt about it; Patrick Ness truly is a gifted writer. The way he expertly cross cuts between the two main characters Todd and Viola is astounding, and just when you think he’s out of his depth he introduces a third person, the formidable Return.
I found myself at a disadvantage having not read his previous books and was baffled by the first few pages, however thanks to Patrick’s remarkable writing style I found it relatively easy to piece together pieces of Todd and Viola’s past. The story is about this girl called Viola who lost her parents when her spaceship crashed on a strange planet. Scared and confused she found a boy called Todd who helped her get her life back. Until she met the mayor, a mad, war driven monstrosity who smashed her life to pieces once again. Now the mayor is at war with the Spackle again and the arrival of two people from Viola’s past only stirs things up further. The book is a feat of incredible skill and talent and I’m sure it does its predecessors justice.
The characters in the book are extremely believable and you can relate to them a lot because it actually feels like you’re on their journey with them. Todd and Viola have an extremely strong relationship to start with but when Viols finds out that Todd has released the mayor they worked so hard to capture their trust wavers. I think that Patrick Ness knows these two characters so well that they might have been inspired by his two best friends or even his parents.
The story dives straight into action with bombs being dropped left, right and centre. Patrick has created this clever concept known as the noise which is a powerful force that allows certain people to read each other’s thoughts and even use it as a weapon; it is a very unique and ingenious idea, top marks for Mr Ness! There are quite a lot of familiar faces in this book and although I haven’t read the previous two I can deduct this from the way the author has skilfully described the characters reactions to these newcomers.
The story cleverly crosses between Todd and Viola at the start so you know what is happening to the both of them at the same time even though they’re in two completely different places. Although you can guess what happens next many times, Patrick Ness’s remarkable imagination makes sure that you’re hardly ever right. The idea of being in the mind of a third person in the story excites me, and to no surprise Patrick Ness delivers 10 times what I thought he would. I have learnt more about the Spackle and their ways in just one book that I could have in a million years with the world’s best teacher.
I would highly recommend this book to people aged 13 or above but I do also suggest you read Patrick Ness’s other books ‘The knife of never letting go’ and ‘The Ask and the Answer’ beforehand. If anything this book left me frustrated at not having read the previous books earlier because I feel I’ve rather spoiled the ending for myself, I’m definitely going to have to read more of his work!
A truly unfathomably great accomplishment – Well Done Patrick Ness,
Prem
Hi Patrick! I just wanted to say that your books are beautiful, but you probably already know that. Monsters of Men is now my favorite book, and I never thought I would find a series I love more than Harry Potter but you have done it. I've recommended Chaos Walking to everyone I know, and can't wait to read more from you!
God bless,
Kaylyn
HEY! I am a great fan of your Chaos Walking trilogy. The ending was good, though a little strange. what I like about it is that you have left it open for another book. Also it makes the reader want to know what happens next. If there was to be another book I am sure it would be very popular, and I for one would definatly read it.
Hello, I would just like to say congratuations on publishing a beautiful trilogy, it has been a long time since I have read a book which inspired me like these have. The world you have created is the perfect oasis. Thank you,
LP
Hi Patrick!
Your book The Knife of Never Letting Go is my favorite book! I've read book 1, book 2 (which i just finished) and i couldn't help , but look at the end of book 3. Are you going to make a book 4? Please do, I really LOVE your books!!!! I finish reading your books really fast because i can never put your books down!!! :)
Thanks,
Alexis :D
Just wanted to thank you very much for your visit to County Upper School on Monday afternoon. It was very much appreciates by students and teachers and will be included in the school Accolade and probably in the local paper, Bury Free Press, too.

Thanks for being so nice to my daughters at the Hay Festival, they really enjoyed the talk!

Hey Patrick,
I have just finished reading the Chaos Walking trilogy and am absolutely mesmerized by it!!!! I didnt want Monster of Men to end so PLEASE write another one to follow on. I want to find out [edited for spoilers]!!!! OMG i think i might actually be addicted to the trilogy because I cant stop thinking about Todd and Viola!!!!
PLEASE WRITE A BOOK TO FOLLOW ON AND MAYBE MAKE THEM INTO A FILM BECAUSE THEY COULD BE HUGE!!!!!
Hi Mr Ness,
I absoutly adore the chaos walking books and the way you finished 'Monsters of Men' was very satisfying for all Todd and Viola fans.
I really want to read 'A Monster Calls' but I don't think I'm ready as someone really close to me has just died of cancer but hopefully I will read it someday but I think you were really brave to carry on writting that story.
I was hoping for some advice, I have an idea for a book and I was wondering if there are any rules or restrictions when creating your own Planet/Island?
Thank you for reading and I hope you could respond as I am eager to hear your advice.
Claire xxx
(P.S I am rooting for you to win the carnegie award next week!!)
Hi Patrick,
Thank you so much for A Monster Calls. Whilst I only know Siobhan from her books, I know she would have loved the the way it turned out. I heard both of your voices/styles as I read the book (being a reader of all of yours and Siobhan's books).
I also need to apologise to the other passengers who had to witness my heart breaking (and the accompanied sobbing/howling) as I read the final few chapters on the train the other morning.
A beautiful book that I can't stop thinking about - and the illustrations! I cannot describe how perfectly they compliment the story.
Congratulations to all of you who contributed to this special book.
Ferny
I'm an english teacher who is part of the carnegie shadowing group in my school (with a wonderful librarian.)Each year when I read the carnegie short list, I constantly changed my mind as to which novel I thought would win. Until the year of Todd. What a character! As a slow reader with lots to read for many years groups, including dissertation novels for S6, Chaos Walking frightened me a bit at first. But, on a train journey to Brighton in April this year with Monsters of Men, I hardly saw the scenery and had finished it by Newcastle on the way home. What an amazing climax to the series. Didn't think the knife could be bettered (to be honest, the ask didn't do it- maybe too much to live up to) but Monsters did. All I had to read in my teens were 'the classics' once I'd grown out of the chalet school so maybe I'm now living what I missed as a reading experience then- and loving every minute. So original. Unforgettable. I wish I still were about to read them for the first time. Thanks. Hope you win this year- it will be a travesty if you don't.
I have just been sent your book. I really LOVED it. My mother died this year, not from cancer but old age. This is a book that is a treasure because you can read it again and again and find a plaster to put over your pain no matter how you lost your Mum, no matter how old you are.
I would love to come to one of your classes if you have them? If you don't have them...then please invent them.
Adored the drawings too. Very dark. Very magical. A work of genius.
Thank you.
May I just say that I am in love with your books and writing style?
I enjoyed reading Todd's hillbilly "yer"s and "stayshun"s, and how Viola was so proper with her language. I believe it really showed the difference in how they were raised. The fact that you switch narratives in A&A and MOM really had me going; this is how i write my stories, because it asnwers that "what is (s)he feeling while this os happeining?" question.
I also believe the talking animals were beautifully voiced - especially our Manchee. I loved the relationship he had with Todd and Viola, and also the horses' willingness to protect.
Your plot was fantastic, and I read MOM in two days (I'm 13), starting within the release week. It was difficult for me to keep quiet to all my friends with they read it, but i wouldn't have wanted to spoil that shocker for them!
One thing we all agree on: you must write more! I just downloaded the Nook book you wrote, but I haven't read it yet, and it's a prequel. I'd love a spin off trilogy so we can find out what happens to Todd and Viola (especially their relationship). Also, if you could answer a question which has really plagued us all: what is the gender of 1017? (I figure that will be edited, but it's what we'd like to see in another series, or maybe even on her *hint*)
These books are wonderful, and i reccommend them to everyone, so thanks for writing them.
Lydia
I love your books. I especially love the trilogy of Chaos walking. I am up to the second book right now. Your writing is amazing when I read your books I can't put them down. What are you planning to write next?
Mr. Ness,
Thank you for such a wonderful ride. I'm moved by your writing. The voice of The Return broke my heart.Poor, brave Acorn. You held back no punches and for that I thank you.
Hi again!
I just wanted to say first off that I am really happy that you likes my first poems about The Chaos Walking Trilogy
AND...
I written another one:
I am the circle and the circle is me
Over and over
One, two, three
Over and over
you want to be free
I am the circle and the circle is me
All of reality is filled with lies
Always and forever
You need somewhere to hide
Always and forever
The truth always dies
All of reality is filled with lies
The Knife, The Knife, In the fading light
We'll run and run
They will not win this fight
We'll run and run
We try to find our sight
The Knife, The Knife in the faded light.
Just PLEASE let me know what you think of it. I've been working on my poetry for awhile and this poem took me over three hours to write! ha-ha... i kept deleting it and writing it again and again and again!
I really love your work by the way. and you are my inspiration for writing! I only started writing after i read your books and I just loved it! I just kept think of all the worlds people could make through writing and i can't stop. I just...Took off. I spend hours and hours on my computer typing until my fingers are cramped! (not kidding!!)
haha. you are just a genius and I really hope yuo like my latest poem!
Best Wishes,
Skylar

I loved loved loved every one of the three Chaos Walking books. Each one made me cry, but I was so happy that even though it all ended with Todd coming out of a coma, you took care of all the details throughout Monsters of Men to what was going to happen next. When I found out about The New World, I was so excited! But is it going to come to the press or is it only going to be on e-book? I need to read it!! Anyway these are outstanding books, good for anyone, and though I'm the world's slowest reader, I finished each one in a week or less. Thanks so much for writing. :) -Desire'e
Hey Patrick,
I don't know if you actually read these comments but Your books 'the knife of never letting go' and the others that come after it are one of my favourite books i have read in a long time :)
I won them through a competition and had no idea i'd win. Anyway I like them because they're unique and have nothing to do with vampires! which every other girl in my year level seems to be obsessed with now :|
from, selina
I love your stuff and I have talked to you briefly on Twitter. I do have one question for you though. What are your thoughts on Dialogue-vs-Exposition? Do you think a story is best written when there is mostly dialogue moving the story forward or exposition moving a story forward? I'm curious as to what you think.
On another note, I love your books and I hope to one day get to see my books that I have been slaving over with my profs in print!
Keep writing-
Ailyshah
Just wanted to pass on my thanks for "A Monster Calls". I read it and wept literally .. I lost my Mum to Cancer when I was 12 and I was left blissfully ignorant of her condition up until her death. To read this was the opening of many doors and the closing of a number so thankyou to you, to Siobhan and her loved ones :)
I had never read anything by you before so I shall definately reach for your books on the shelves in future.
Gerry Warwick (Mrs)
hello, i am 15 years old and finished your chaos walking trilogy yesterday! I loved every one of the books! I felt a real connection with the characters and went through many emotions while reading: tears, laughter, empathy, anger and mainly enjoyment! i have suggested the book to many friends, who felt the same way i do about the trilogy! thank you for introducing me to such wonderful characters! Well done!
Hey there Mr. Ness,
It's been a while since we've posted anything on our youtube channel. But I recently bought a kindle and non-stop read the last of the Chaos Walking trilogy. And yesterday, I read the final chapter in the middle of my lunch period. I shouted. A lot. I still want this trilogy to be blockbuster movies. Hopefully soon. And if not soon, then if I become a director (which is my dream), I'll make sure it happens and trust me I will not destroy your book in theaters like most book-based movies do.
Sincerely,
Jack
Can you please write a sequel trilogy or something? Like another trilogy or another series that continues on from the Chaos Walking trilogy? People are dying to read more! You could include things about the new.. well I think you know what I mean I don't want to spoil anything.
I could not stop reading this series. Literally. I read it more than the twilight series... that's how great it is! And I'm a teenage girl in love with Taylor Lautner. You should contact somebody about making a movie... seriously! You are great. I cried for 10min when [edited for spoilers, sorry], and same with when [edited, too]. I could feel everything the characters felt, and if you don't make a movie, WRITE ANOTHER BOOK! I cannot just wait!
Hi! :D I've come to leave a comment on your page in the hopes you'll see it. Isn't the internet wonderful?
Anyway, I wanted to tell you how much I love your Chaos Walking books. I kind of treat Todd and the rest of the characters as real people inside my head. That might make me a little crazy, but I'm totally okay with being crazy. I don't think you can even begin to understand how much I love these books. Harry Potter? pshh. The Hunger Games? ha! If you were here right now I would give you the biggest bear hug ever to try and transfer some of these exploding feelings of awesomeness to you. You see? That didn't even make sense. I love your writing so much it makes me incapable of leaving coherent comments.
Thank you for being so cool.
Thank you.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. I finished reading "Monsters of Men" last night and have been thinking about it ever since. Of all the books I've read so far, I have never felt the need to write the author a message to say just how much I love their book(s), the story, the characters in it, the way it's written - basically, the sheer brilliance of everything. This is also the first time in which I feel that words of praise, of gratefulness, are simply not enough.
"Chaos Walking" is one of the only series that kept me guessing until the very end, and even beyond the last page. The twists and turns are so unexpected and the cliffhangers so cruel that I had deliberately left this final book for the start of my summer vacation in which I have all the time in the world, knowing that once started, I would not be able to stop until I reach the end.
The characters are absolutely amazing and I find myself literally fearing for their lives, often forgetting that they're *gulp* not real. I cared more for the protagonists than for Harry, Ron, and Hermione (being a huge HP fan, that's really saying something). At one point in this last installment (and I bet you know which I'm talking about), I was so overwhelmed with emotions that I just couldn't read on. I turned off the lights and sat there in the dark and wondered how it is possible that words could be so powerful. Books hardly ever make me cry, and this one didn't either. Because I was beyond the point of crying. Because I was too shocked to do anything but sit and stare at the words in disbelief, and, in denial.
I love how the bad guys (though I really shouldn't use the word "bad", should I?) are not stock characters and are given proper treatment so that they're just as developed as the protagonists. There would be moments in which I think I finally understand them, only to turn the page and realize that I don't actually know them at all, at least not enough to be able to foresee their actions. Everything they do, no matter how unpredictable, is also within the scope of who they are, so that these characters are as real as real people could be.
I wish I could have said "I totally saw that coming" at least once while reading the series. The truth is, everything, especially the ending, is beyond what I could ever wish for. However, reflecting on it now, how could I have not seen it coming? I'm not sure I'm making any sense here. What I mean to say is that the twists and turns are surprising and yet very believably convincing and makes so much sense (now that I think about it) that everything just sort of falls into place.
While I would be thrilled if you could write a forth book, I'm also grateful that you did not make the story longer than necessary. I'm now in the process of picking the books apart letter by letter, word by word, to make sure that I didn't miss out on anything that might have gone unnoticed when I was racing through the books the first time 'round.
Sorry for the wall of text, the lack of organization and the occasional (understatement) cheesiness here and there in this message (and I also hope that you didn't get creeped out by how obviously obsessed I am with the series). But really, thank you so, so much for writing such wonderful books because reading them are experiences that I would never forget. I also tried to keep this message as spoiler-free as possible, but it's so hard to talk about it without touching on the actual content, so please remove any parts that might be too revealing.
Oh, and one last thing. Manchee is probably the best dog in the world of fiction (and possibly in the real world, too).
Hi,I am writing this through my tears. I have not read any of your other books but am a big fan of Siobhan Dowd's work and felt I had to tell you how much I loved A Monster Calls. Fantastic book! She would, I am sure, agree. Elspeth x
Well hello there!
I was wondering if you had any plans on a book tour in Canada. I know many people who love your books, and getting all the way down to the US isn't usually an option for us Canadians... We don't bite.
Honest.
Cheers, enjoy your weekend.
Evan
My copy of A Monster Calls has just arrived this morning.I love it already, just from the feel of the paper and the smell of the print... I haven't had a novel that smelled like that for ages. One part of me wants to tuck right into it, the other wants to just have it around for a few days, building up its presence, like a quiet monster waiting to devour me.
Wish that I'd been able to get it signed.. any more London dates coming up? Or do I need to wait for next time?
Thank you, for all your beautiful books, my world is a better place for having them in it.
Hello Patrick Ness.
My name is Jaqueline and I am 15 years old. In my english class we had a final project which was book club, and I chose to read your book with about eight other students. As one of our activities we could write to you and tell you our opinion of the book. Well we read "The Knife of Never Letting Go."
In my opinion, this book is very amazing! Although the begining was a little slow, it got a lot better after about the fourth chapter. As the book continued I found myself wanting to find out what would happen next. I fell in love with the character Manchee, because he was so loyal to Todd. [and then edited for quite a few spoilers, sorry, but I did read it, Jacqueline! -- PN] In the end I thought the book was really good and can't wait to read the second book to the series.
I just finished Monsters of Men, I love the whole trilogy. It was recommended to me by a Borders associate during my visit to find something new to read. She was right on the nose by saying the books were a great read and action packed.
Please consider writing more of the Todd and Viola story, I truly adored those two. I know that your books are YA books, however us adults enjoy them as well.
Carol, age 47
Hi Patrick,
I've just finished A Monster Calls. It is staggering. Normally I read like a chain-smoker. No sooner have I closed one book do I start another one. It is some forty-five minutes after the last page of AMC and I am still sitting in contemplation, my next book chosen but unopened, my own work in progress lying ignored.
Congratulations on a wonderful book.
Best Wishes,
Michael
So, your Knife of Never Letting Go trioligy was one of my favorites. Though I would love to see another to follow Mosters of Men. [edited for spoilers, sorry] It would be amazing if you wrote another because you are such a great writer and your books just make you feel like you are connected to both Todd and Viola. I love your idea of "Noise" and how you incorperate that into their everyday life. Also, there are many stories, by the Mayor, Ben and what Todd thought in the beggining, What had happened to all the Prentiss Town Women? I'm so glad you chose to be a writer because not only do you write fantasticly, you put so much into it that the reader, or I, felt as one with the characters and felt their emotions along with them. It was a very fun and interesting book, but I still have questions about the end. And hopefully you will make one more? To sum it all up?

Hi again! I just added a comment yesterday but here I am again.
I just watched an interview with you on youtube (I'm kind on stalking you online right now..) and you said Hildy is based on your great aunt from Norway. Really!? You have relatives here? Have you ever been here? You should come visit! :)
Oh my god!!! I love your books!! They are so amazing. I really want to know if you are going to right any other childrens books and if this will turn into a film. I'd love to be in it as I spend most of my time reading those books and I am thinking about doing my bedroom theme as the chaos walking trilogy
Hello! I was so excited when I found out about this website!
I read your Chaos Walking series! I finished a few months ago! But the whole story has never left my mind whenever I think about it i'm like
'Wow! That, just has to be the BEST series I have EVER read!'
Which is why I was THRILLED to find a way to contact you! To show my... hm... appreciation, i suppose, of this AMAZING series of books that you have produced!
I was actually just wondering, I know you said that the 'Monsters of Men' book was the last, but have you ever even had the slightest idea to write a fourth! I would love to know what happened! My imagination is driving me crazy!
Anyway, I'm sure you have lots to do. But I appreciate you giving time to read this.
Bethany
Hi Patrick!
I'm a 20 year old norwegian reader, and I just wanted to let you know that I love love love your Chaos Walking trilogi! I don't even know how to put to words how much I loved it. I've never read books that well written before. Your writing is amazing - it brings out the emotions and excitement like nothing I've ever read before. I haven't read YA-books with such depth, and writing that good since the Harry Potter books, which is my favourite series, and has been since I was 9. And now I have the Chaos Walking series right next to my HP-books on my shelf.
You're an amazing writer! I really hope you will be writing more YA-books soon. But I'm going to read everything you write, no matter what genre of course.
Can't wait to read "a monster calls".
Patrick,
I must say that your novel "The Knife of Never Letting Go" instantly got me hooked from page one. Everything about it was amazing! The thought of having to be in Todd's shoes kept me guessing throughout the whole story. The suspense was great as well! The detail that you put into each page made it clear for me to picture everything that was going on crystal clearly in my head.
We had to read this book for an assignment in class, and let my say that I loved every bit of it! I can't wait to buy the other two books and see what happens to Todd and Voila as they try to escape the evil men from Prentisstown. Thanks for writing such great novels for young adults. I would love to see this novel come to life in the big screen!
I'm a secondary school English teacher in South East England, and every holiday I buy myself a book to read the first couple of days as a chill out reward. In October last year, it was 'The Knife...' and by the second day of my holiday I had traipsed to a shop to buy the second and third books, both of which I had finished two days later.
This half term, I went with 'A monster calls', fully intending for it to take me a couple of days into the holiday. Three hours later I was telling everyone I know or work with that they had to buy it and ordering a copy to send my best friend in Japan.
I don't gush or enthuse, but My God sir, your books are truly a work of artistic genius. Reading has been my favourite thing to do all my life, and I genuinely think 'Monster' just toppled 'Neverending Story' and 'Something Wicked' as my favourite book of all time. I'll turn 30 this year, and I could still relate to Conor and everything he said and did.
I hope to be reading your beautiful, honest stories for many years to come.
Hey Patick,
thank you so very much for the Chaos Walking-trilogy! It's among the best books I've read lately. That perspective on people, on war, and your language ... there are mainly two words I associate with your books: "disturbing" and "beautiful".
Thank you!
Lea
Patrick,
I just wanted to write and say how happy I was that I ordered _A Monster Calls_ from the UK, rather than waiting for the US release. This book will be a classic someday, a true masterpiece.
I cried, I learned, I cried through the learning and I learned from the tears.
Thank you for this gift. And thank you Siobhan for leaving us with this idea.
Hi Patrick,
I am a film-maker that would like to send you a dvd of my film-work as Im keen to find out if there is anyway you would ever consider writing or collaborating with me on a fantasy short film screenplay. My website too peruse is :www.devlincrow.com. i love your writing and are keen to find out whether you would consider this. Hi Mr. Ness,
I was truly astounded with the book "The Knife of Never Letting Go" that I couldn't wait to get my hands on the rest of the series. I'm tearing through the Ask and the Answer right now, and I have to say you are such a talented writer! The way you switch back and forth between viewpoints of Viola and Todd without it getting confusing is AMAZING! And this is coming from the harshest book critic at my school. I applaud you Mr. Ness. I look forward to reading more of your works.
Dear Mr. Ness,
Ever since I grew up, Harry Potter was my all time favorite book series and nothing compared. Until I read the Chaos Walking series. I am about to read Monsters of Men, but my best friend told me that she wishes there was another book, and I'm sure I will too. This is the first series since Harry Potter that I can say I will read many more times. Please consider writing another Chaos Walking book ! I'm sure many fans agree !
Best Wishes,
Emily (age 15)
Hi!
I read your books for the Carnegie medal and I thought they were really really good. I couldn't put it down!
Is there going to be another book?
Because I want to know [edited for spoilers, sorry].
I'd just like to say, thank you.
You are an amazing writer, I've loved the Chaos Walking books, its almost like I've become emotionally attached to the characters. If you wrote another book on Todd and Viola, it would be absolutely amazing! I'm 15 so reading your books is a great inspiration to me.
As I said at the start,
thank you.
Hi. I am a really big fan of your chaos walking trio. I have finished the series and i can't get over the thought of not reading them anymore. Please could you write another book for the series as i would like to find out what happens [edited for some spoilers] Pleeeeeeeeease can you write another!!!!
Your dedicated fan,
Ava

"A Monster Calls" well well well...best book this year so far...so much in such a small and beuatifully presented package...this is what books should be about.
Just sheer quality on every level!
Brilliant!
Hi. I was wondering, is 1017, or The Sky as he is later known, gay? His one in particular is male and I was wondering if he was a lover or a close friend, like the previous Sky. Maybe you can clear it up for me? You can contact me through my blog:)
*THIS COMMENT HAS SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE YET TO READ THE CHAOS WALKING TRILOGY* [spoilers edited out]
Dear Patrick,
I read your Chaos Walking series on a recommendation from a friend. I can't believe I hadn't heard of it before! The books are truly the most wonderful thing I've stubled on lately, this year, in the last few years, my entire life etc etc. I haven't embraced a series of books so fondly since Harry Potter. But Harry Potter had the advantage as it had seven books. Your trilogy, while magnificient, has left me sadly unfulfilled. I am ambling through life in a zombie state, asking myself what is wrong. I ask my friend who rec'ed the book if there's more to life. Obviously the answer is no.
If I tell you what I loved about the book, will you consider writing a fourth? (Consider being the operative word.) Long and short, I loved everything. I loved, loved, loved Todd, with his simple thoughts and prose and words, the way what was written seemed like a direct regurgitation of what he thought. Some people have verbal diarrhoea. Todd Hewitt has mental diarrhoea. I loved the evolution of Todd from a boy to a man. When the series ended, it's something I marvelled at- as with Viola too. When I was reading "Knife", there was no way I could have envisioned how strong and truly wonderful they would become.
I loved Viola. I loved how she went from being voiceless to being one of the strongest female characters I've encountered in a while.
I loved the idea of a world of hearing people's thoughts (wouldn't want to live there personally.)
I loved Angharrad. I loved Ben. I loved Lee. I loved Bradley. I hated Corinne (I just didn't understand her motives or her at all.) The Mayor was interesting!!!! And my heart tore when I read about Davy jr.
I loved how nothing was black or white. That you put the good characters through bad, moral-questioning situations and drew out the baddie in them. You drew out the goodie in the baddies too. You made things go from bad to worse to the absolute worse. I loved that my heart jumped (right up to my nose, if you were wondering) and that I had to stop and catch my breath (as though I'd run a marathon!)
There aren't many books where I've felt like I've gone on a journey. But I really feel I have- right along with Todd and Viola. And I truly can't get the books out of my system. I recommend them to everyone. I had a job interview today and when asked what I do in my spare time, I let them know I've just read "Chaos Walking."
But back to the fourth book. I'm not usually one of those people who ask for more. And if an ending is unhappy or ambiguous, I can live with that, I truly can. But with "Monsters" I feel unfulfilled. Like I have a gazillion questions that still need to be answered. Usually, I'd probably read fanfic to get it out of my system, but I don't think I'd ever be content unless it came from you. There's so many things I need to know.
I know a book is probably unlikely (but PLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASE anyway). I would be happy with just a segment- like someone else mentioned, something online, like you apparently did for a prologue on kindle? I really just want a proper goodbye- nothing sappy, I don't expect a happy ending (not from you, anyway!) I watch Doctor Who, so I'll quote the last episode. I'll be all: "I just wanted to say hello" (to all your characters) and they'd be all GOODBYE etc etc.
Ramblings aside, thank you so much for writing Chaos Walking. I'm thankful for the world that has been opened up to me, and so glad all three books were out so I didn't have to wait a lifetime for each.
Best wishes and take care!
P.S- If you do write another book, it obviously won't be part of the trilogy. You can call it "Chaos Running". Or "Chaos: No More". Or: "Chaos?"
"The Hobbit" prefixed the LOTR triology; this can the opposite!
Why cannot you make anouther choas walking book?
they are the best books I have ever read.
hi patrick,
i came to the book fair at earl's high school on tusady.
i was the girl with 5 questions and i love the book even thought i haven't finshed .
thant you for writeing a amazing book i love it
keely
ps. i love to read and hope to read more of your books.
HI Patric, you're book series, "The Chaos Walking Series" is my favorite book ever. I hope you are working on new things for me to read, because you're my favorite author. Do you ever come to New York City, because I would to love to meet you.
i hope to hear from you. THX JAKE age 10/11 :D
I was the winner of your book, A Monster Calls, because I won the competition of what I thought cancer looked like as a monster. I really love this book and would recomend it to a friend. It made me cry and the end and I could really feel Conors' emotions. I would give this book 10 out of 10!
Hi Patrick. It's twenty past two in the morning and I've just finished reading A Monster Calls. I'm going to be ridiculously tired at work tomorrow but hey, it was worth it (plus, I work in a library, so being tired from reading into the wee hours is met with a certain degree of sympathy). I absolutely loved the book from start to finish, and don't think I have ever cried so hard at the end of a book in all my life. It was beautiful, and moving, and so painfully true. I was as blown away by the illustrations as the text - I'm a big fan of illustrated books, and I don't think I've ever come across one where the text and pictures worked in such fantastic symbiosis. It doesn't say on the sleeve who did the layout design - was that you or Jim Kay or both or someone else entirely? - I'd love to know. Hope the promotion stuff is fun and going well, I'll be at the Hay festival in a couple of weeks to hear you talking with David Almond, really looking forward to it. Right, time for some sleep so I can spend all day tomorrow telling people to buy the book (and maybe making some trouble too). Thanks for the great read.
Hello, dear Patrick.
My name is Zlatka and I am the Bulgarian translator of Chaos Walking trilogy. All three books are published by STUDIO ARTLINE Publishing House, Bulgaria. The Knife of Never Letting Go and The Ask and The Answer are already on the Bulgarian book market, as you perhaps already know :)
I am very glad to see you here in your website. I know that contacts like these should be properly made through your agents, but I really must tell you that I am deeply in love with your books from the Chaos Walking trilogy. It is a great pleasure to work on them - translating your novels is a real challenge and incredible fun at the same time.
Actually I discovered the trilogy for myself and then a little later started working with ARTLINE as your Publisher in Bulgaria. Translation is a beautiful and profound type of reading and understanding and you and your texts deserve every single effort!
The ARTLINE team and myself personally are great fans of your work. I would be really glad if I have an opportunity to talk to you about your books :)
Please accept my best and warmest regards!

Hi Patrick
I'm an Australian bookseller who was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy of A Monster Calls. Just wanted to let you know how much I was affected by it - Conor and his pain and fears are so beautifully portrayed, and so truthfully. I watched my soulmate suffer and die of cancer last year, so the last few pages had me in absolute waves of tears, and sympathy for Conor and his mother... I think you have honoured Siobhan O'Dowd greatly, but also that you have created a wondrous thing with this book. Thank you. Lindy
dear patrick,
its 1:oo am and i have just stayed up all night to read a monster calls and thus after finishing it, weep. I have spent the last twenty minutes surrounding myself with all my favourite childhood toys to try and calm myself so that i may finally sleep. but then i realised there was something i had to do. something that unlike homework or revision or a lot of things in life could not be left until the next day. i have to thank you. i also have to thank siobhan for the idea for the book but mainly you for writing it. i have never been so touched by a book in my life and i have not wept so much since the death of my great-grandmother. now i'll be honest i had my worries that topping chaos walking would be near impossible yet in my opinion you did it so very well. a monster calls is just breathtaking. it is one of those books i believe everyone should read, but with a box of tissues handy. i could write numerous essays on how believable and absorbing the characters were or the brilliance of the concept but i will keep it simple. literary exellence. my dream is to become an author(despite poor grammar and spelling!) like you and even though i write in a different genre and style i hope that one day i can write something that will touch at least one person as much as your novel has touched me and im sure countless others. i know you probably get this all the time but you are a great inspiration and truly gifted wordsmith. forget shakespeare. i hope you read this and i hope it reminds you of how important your work is. although if you do read this i apologise for the length, and grammar, but i felt i had to tell you just how much i loved your book and i did not feel a tweet was long enough and i as much as i would love to send you a letter that did not feel immediate enough. i truly believe a monster calls will go down in history as one of the truly classic novels of all time, as i think all of your books will but how could a monster calls not?
thank you so very much, chad.
Dear Mr. Ness;
Hello! My name is Lily, and I'm in the eighth grade in the United States. Currently in Language Arts, we're doing a study on our favorite author, during which we must analyze and compare their books.
I've been a fan of your Chaos Walking series for almost two years now, and I've all but forced anyone who will listen for five seconds to read your books, including my teacher and school librarian. I was writing a (very bad) book at the time, and while waiting for my library to buy The Ask and the Answer, I tried my best to cram your fantastic writing style into it. Needless to say, that turned out terrible, but I digress.
Your writing is so...immersive. I've read books where I'm so emotionally uninvested in the characters that they could jump off a cliff into a pit of fire-breathing crocodiles for all I care. The Choas Walking series was the exact opposite: I felt like I'd grown up with Todd, like I'd known him all my life. A lot of times when I write I end up hating my characters by page five, but I really felt like Todd and Viola were characters you cared about making a future for, not just puppets in a play.
Rarily where I live do I come across a book that is not in a genre or a pattern that has not already been beaten to death by a thousand other authors, or with flawless characters you're just supposed to love for their flawless...ness. Little gems like The Knife of Never Letting Go that lead to me wishing I lived in the UK so that I wouldn't have to wait an extra three months for the release really make my day. Thank you for inspiring me, Mr. Ness.
Sincerely,
Lily
Hi again Patrick.
Congrats again on a terrific piece of work. A MONSTER CALLS is a most touching read and a perfect memorial to Siobhan Dowd. I read it, as I expect most people will, in one sitting. A beautiful book.
Hope to see you at The Gutter Bookshop here in Dublin tomorrow evening.
Karl
Hi Mr. Ness,
You came to my school (Champlin Park) this past fall and I was in a group that got to have a seminar with you. I remember you being really smart and thought you might be good person to ask for creative ideas. This is the challenge: I need to figure out how to come up with $60,000 to go to my top college choice. I have tried applying for scholarships and it hasn't worked out. Several people have suggested writing to famous people. Do you have any other good ideas or people I could write to?
Thank-you,
Erica
Hey Patrick :)
Was jsut listening to you on Radio 4!
What you were saying about writing a comedy - if you aren't laughing then it's not funny and action - if you aren't excited then it's not excited...was really interesting.
I suppose it's obvious but I've never thought about it before. I'll be sure to read over my own writing and make sure I'm doing it right!
Can't wait for my copy of A Monster Calls to arrive in the post!
xD
Mr Ness
I should start this off by making a confession. When I first saw "The Knife of Never Letting Go", I was a little suspicious, perhaps because I noticed it was written in the present tense. I turned out to be wrong, and the writing style in the chaos walking trilogy is, without a doubt, perfect.
Not since reading Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" has a series of books encaptured me so (This is saying a lot). By the end of Book one I was in total awe. The slight change of theme in Book 2 worked really well, and I loved the way Todd and Viola developed as characters... hell, I loved Todd and Viola. The conclusion of the series, and the end of the final book was just amazing, so well thought out and totally appropriate. Having closed Monsters oof Men, I feel like I've lost New World (I am secretly very dissapointed Viola and Todd aren't real)
I'm not sure what I'm trying to say in this message, so I'll string some facts together to make a vague sort of conclusion - I am 17, and should, according to my contempories, not care about books. They're wrong. My generation needs more authors like you. Oh and I compared you to Phillip Pullman, so BE FLATTERED!!!
Several of my pupils are reading books shortlisted for the Carnegie Award and I am so glad that 'Monsters Of Men' was shortlisted, as that is how I stumbled across your 'Chaos Walking' trilogy. Myself and others are now racing through the books, absolutely hooked and desperate to find out what happens next. I finished the series today and thought it was stunning, however, I would add one caution for others; these books are addictive and you may not want to do anything else if you pick one up! Well done for capturing the horror of war in a way that young people will relate to. Best of luck with the competition.
Hi Patrick!
Wow you are an amazing author. I have always been into reading and I fell in love with all the supernatural type books but then shadowing the carnegie I read the chaos walking triology. It completely overtook any books I have ever read before. I couldn't wait two days until the school library had the book, I literally ran from school and bought the last book. I was shocked that the ask and the answer didn't win the carnegie last year and my friends and I were grumbling for months. I was so happy to see monsters of men on the short list. The year before I joined my school you visited us I was so upset that I'd missed you. So good luck for the carnegie even though we all know you don't need it. And I hope that one day I can meet you. Please let us know if you are doing any book signings soon!
Meg.
:)
Dear Patrick,
I just (and I mean literally two minutes ago) finished Monster of Men, and I would like to tell you JUST HOW HARD I cried over the last fifty pages of that book. Seriously, snot running down my face, uncontrollable shaking, scaring my parents in the other room with my keening kind of crying. And the biggest part of it was crying from joy, which is not something I've been known to do.
I don't think I've ever been so moved emotionally by a book - or any piece of fiction, for that matter - in my entire life. And I'm the kind of girl that cries in movies (I am truly hopeless at the best of times, it's true). The worst part was that I spent most of my time reading the Chaos Walking trilogy on the bus or at work, and so I'd have to stop myself from weeping loudly or screaming in frustration or shouting for joy so as not to get funny looks (some of which I was already recieving from the expressions on my face). That, and finishing my break and having to put my book down (although the shifting point of view in books two and three made it a little easier... mostly. Somewhat. Barely at all.
Okay, I'd just finish that section and then that section and then I'd be ten minutes over, but who's counting?).
So, thankyou. Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou! I enjoyed all three books so, so very much that I can barely express it properly.
Hey!
Luv Chaos Walking trilogy!!!!!!!!!!!!! Monsters Of Men was sssssssssssoooooooo amazing!!!! It gets really boring when there are two main characters (a boy and a girl) cos then it gets REALLY romancey and yucky! :)But u used Todd and Viola to try and stop the war without it getting sssssssssoooooooooo annoying u hav 2 stop reading! Hoping 2 see u at Carnegie 2011 cos I woud luv 2 ask some questions. Still luvin' that series 4 eva, bye!
Dear Mr. Ness,
I want to thank you for the contribution that you have made to YA literature with your Chaos Walking trilogy.
My exams just finished up, and I finally had time to sit down with Monsters of Men, which has been tantalizing me from my bookshelf for months as I read political theory. I reread The Knife of Never Letting Go and The Ask and The Answer yesterday to remind myself of the intricacies of the story, and I was blown away all over again by how unique, creative, and compelling New World is. Your writing style is endlessly enjoyable and entertaining. You managed to tackle what are arguably the most difficult questions in life as we know it, and guided your readers through while still allowing them to come to their own conclusions. The characters are some of my favorites from any series ever. I feel I know them, and I care about them as I care about my real-life friends.
I read Monsters of Men today, which sounds a bit pretentious, but I have literally been unable to put it down. I made the decision (about 30 pages from the end) to write to you, because I was infuriated with you. I have not sobbed like that over a book since Zusak's "The Book Thief". Thank you for redeeming yourself so wonderfully, mending my broken heart, and coming to the most satisfying conclusion I've read in a long time.
I loved these books. I feel that my words aren't big enough to describe it, but you have done a truly spectacular job, and I honestly feel privileged to have gone on the journey with Todd and Viola. They were perfect. Thank you so much.
Loved these books not just loved I'm COMPLETLY transfixed with them. Thanks so much for writing them, they are some of the best books I'v read in a long time.I like the way that you didn't repeat yourself and you made each book a book in itself, all of them carried on with the brilliant writing of the one before.I really wish there was a forth book maybe not even a full book just something that shows that they live on they don't just end without a final goodbye to the readers.Ok I know a book is alot to ask but just a sentence will do me,I've come up with a million ideas of my own but none are quite right.Even "And they all lived happily ever after The End" (of course that wouldn't do at all, just an example.)But still even if you don't write another word about Todd Hewwit and his trusty companions I still adored these book and will be reading and enjoying them for years to come. (by the way I'm talking about The Chaos Walking Series)

oh my goodness. i just finished your chaos walking trilogy and i just wanted to tell you it was one of the best series i have ever read. it was amazing. a little surprised at the end seeing as it was THE END. But it was just pretty awesome. Good Job!!

Your chaos walking triology is truely the best books ive ever read. It made me laugh and cry (nearly 12 times in the book). Your ideas were so amazing and some how complecated ( i tried to explain it to my friends and they just walked away)
they are such ruddy amazing books
Hello again!
I have a request for you. Ready? Please, please, please come to the USA to the state of New Jersey! I know, I know. It is a long way, but, I would be soooooooooo ecstatic and elated! I cannot say the name of my school for security's sake but if you visited middle schools throughout New Jersey there is a chance you might visit mine. :) I know that this probably won't happen but I would be overjoyed if you could. After all you are my favorite author and I know a few people at my school who love your books. (sorry that I'm sort of begging you to come here. :D I don't mean to be pushy or anything in anyway.) :)
Sincerely,
Rhiannon, 12 :D
I left a comment here just before reading Monsters of Men, but wanted to comment again, I guess, haha. I recently tracked down and read The Crash of Hennington, which I have to say somehow ended up as one of my favourite books ever. It's strange, but different and I really love it!
The ending of Chaos Walking was very good. Very, very good, although a bit of a shock xD I loved it though! I was wondering how you would end the series, and you pulled it off very well.
I do beg of you not to make a fourth book though. It would ruin the impact of the ending and of the entire series, in my opinion at least.
You've inspired me so much to continue on with my writing and stories. I'm not too sure where I'd be without such amazing authors like you. So I thank you for that!
Also, you should come back to NZ some time so I can get a chance to meet you! Haha, you've got to be one of the top people I want to meet in the whole world. You're awesome :D
Much love,
Orange

The last time I left a message was in August, 2009. And I'm back here to say that I just love the Chaos Walking Trilogy. I finished reading Monsters of Men last night, at 2 in the morning (again, just like The Knife of Never Letting Go) and I would like to thank you for it. I love the character development that takes place throughout the whole series. And thank you for gracing my bookshelf with this trilogy, all three books of it.
Again, thank you so much. You have inspired me to write even more, and I hope that someday, I'll be able to be successful in bringing across such strong emotions to my future readers. c:
Micaela
I love your books and have a presentation over it. My teacher gave me the grade B :).
Hey Patrick!
Just want to say I absolutely love your Chaos Walking trilogy. Best trilogy I have EVER read, and The Knife of Never Letting Go is definitely the best random book I've ever picked up. I had nothing else to read, so I tried it, and I'm so glad I did. You're books and writing style amaze me. I was so sad when i finished Monsters of Men :( I always get like that when i finish a great series haha.
Anyway I'm Irish and I was looking for that Newstalk interview online, but i can't find it. Could you send me a link?
Recent but huge fan,
Luke
Hi Mr Ness !
I'm so glad you do have a website of your own, because it's kind of rare among writers. I've read the whole Chaos wlaking trilogy- in french-, and I've just finished reading La guerre du Bruit, which is definitely my favourite. And I'm totally amazed by your genius. And I mean it. I'm writing myself -well, I try- and books like yours make me want to keep going. Thank you very much, I hope you're gonna write hundreds of other books for teenagers (I know you're only human, and that even you will have serious difficulties to make it, but anyway). (And sorry for my 14-years-old french student english !)
WOW. I just finished the chaos walking trilogy and now all I want to do is think.
Nothing else. Just think about what I have read.
I picked up The Knife of Never Letting Go less than a week ago; I'm 20 years old now so I thought maybe it would be too young, but man was that a nieve thought! I was so gripped by the characters, more gripped than most adult fiction.
So I've powered through them and just finished Monsters of Men, they've been an inspiration and a joy to read, quite possibly the best I've read, and that's coming from a guy who had Harry Potter hype all around him through his teenage years!
Seriously, the way it ended, so painful and so beautiful and so flat out amazing, might inspire me to pick up the pen and do some studying and writing myself.
Thank you for creating those characters, and writing such deep, high suspense fiction.
Thank you Patrick Ness.
One let me say, huge fan ,ending of Monsters of Men genius but I wasn't excpecting it. Second your my favorite author off all time. Third on my lists of things to do before I die MEET PATRICK NESS is number one and I may sound like a crazed fan but I dont care your books are turly amazing!

Patrick,
Your books were truly legendary in the chaos walking series, which I have recentl read and recommended to my mother who has now started to read them.
Although i would LOVE!!! it if you would write a fourth to the series to tell us [edited for lots of spoilers, sorry], Im sure that YOU would be able to pull it off.
I am shadowing the Carnegie prize at my school, and have just finished reading Monsters of Men..
I have to say it is extraordinary, just great, and this is saying something as I don't usually like sci-fi, and have never read something quite like it. I don't think there IS anything quite like it. I am definitely voting for Monsters of Men as the winner!
thanks.
hi i would just like to say i loved the chaos walking trilogy but i think you should write a forth book as [edited for lots of spoilers]. pleeeeaaasssseee write another sequel
I have just finished The Chaos Walking Trilogy and thought it was so phenomenally amazing I am embarrasing myself by mixing words that dont make sense! I cryed(mostly)and laughed(a lot). I am literaly not exagerating, I could not put them down! I like all the hidden meanings and the way you explored cultures and such like. I loved them and am currently trying to force my mum to read them they're that bril. I am only 13 and I read all your books in under a week.AArgh the Ending. i am dying to know what happened but alas... it was the last book:(. I cryed so much when you-know-who died-sob sob and was so happy when [edited for spoilers].They are way better than the Harry Potter series and that is saying something...
A biiiiiiiiiig fan(already). We would love it if you made more stories about Todd and Viola.
Hope you do...
Congrats on the Award, am really happy for you and know you deserved it!
P.S This is the first thingy-ma-bob I have ever commented on, what does that suggest to you?
Hi! I'm 12 and I just finished reading Monsters of men the other day. I know it's a long time since they've been out but they've only just been introduced to me. I loved all 3 books and I know it's a trilogy but PLEASE write another one. I couldn't belive it at the end. In some places I had to swallow really hard to stop myself from crying. What about Todd and Viola? see, this is why you need to write another book!
Thankyou soooo muck for writing the books, I will never forget them.
Susie
Hi Mr.Ness
I've read the first two books of the chaos walking trilogy, and have to wait two weeks until I can read the last one. Your books are the first type that I can read in one day and thats saying something cus I ain't a big reader. You probably know how good your books are so theres no need to really tell you. You have inspired me to write my own story and today I started it, although I dont think it could compete with any author.
Hope you keep on writing and I cant wait for more of your work XD
I've bought La Guerre du bruit this very afternoon thanks to you and your website. The lack of publicity of your books and the fact that they are labelled 'for children' are a constant pain in the ass for me. I'm very fond of your writing's style and your stories and, as a scifi reader, and as a reader per se, I find outrageous this lack of consideration. Though, the french edition are very good and your book is also a fine piece of object, regardless of its content. I'm therefore looking forward tonight to read the end of your epic story. Thanks again for your books.
ps : so you've been at Miyazaki's park, you lucky bastard !
Amazing Books !!!
Amazing Author !!!
Thanks Patrick Ness !!!
I really love Monster of men !!!
French fan ;D
I am dying to read your next book. Maybe you could.. I don't know, come to Portland again... Go to a decemberists concert (if you don't know them, theyre a great portland band) anyway, maybe you could also, you know, hook me up with your new book? Maybe? Because honestly I can't wait to read it. You're writing is really amazing and I hope you never stop until you're reeeealllyy old. Have a great day
Hi Patrick!
I’m sure you already know how amazing your books are, so I’m not going to elaborate on that. But I must say, you know how to make me cry! The part where [edited].... I cried. The part where Manchee [edited].... I cried. The part where [really, really edited].... I cried. I love love LOVE the books, but hate the fact that the series is over.
And the part where the beasts crossing the plain were chanting ‘here’. My absolute favorite part.
Whilst reading the books, I was listening to Jason Mraz’s album over and over again and now when I listen to the music I instantly think of the trilogy :)
Now for my question:
Are any of the books becoming a movie? If not, then PLEASE, for the sake of your millions of fans, try and get it to become one.
Thanks for the books, I will never forget them.
Here Im talking to you, from Israel, with an american computer, so quite hard to talk. Quite hard too, because im sad, my La guerre du bruit is at my home and i cant read it....
When I will be in Paris, ill tell you if I like it even I kbow that EDITED FOR SPOLER SORRY... =D
Cheers from jerusalem
Your biggest french fqn
Ben
Oh Nno!!! Why did you have to pull out of the marathon?!?!
Just watched your Carnegie vid. Glad to hear that you miss Wilf. I always think of him as the Artoo Detoo of the trilogy - the unsung hero who always manages to be there at just the right moment to save the day (though a tad more taciturn than R2). Just curious, was he named for Wilfred Owen or Wilfrid Noyce? Also wondered if you were a Firefly fan, I can easily visualise Todd as a Browncoat; always loved the association of space as being the new frontier
Hi Patrick Ness,
I just finished Monsters of Men (FINALLY!)
I was literally balling, I was stomping around the house because
of that ending! Aaaah!
But you never fail to amaze me with your writing skills.
Keep writing excellent books!

Hello,
I have just finished Monsters of Men for Carnegie and am definately going to pick it! I have read the first two books earlier this day and I really enjoyed All the books and wish there was more, Are you going to be doing anymore like just a short book or online about what happens next. Please I would love to know what you think would happen next!
Hi,
I just finished reading the Chaos Walking series, and it was AMAZING!! I stayed up way too late every night just to read and find out what happens. After I finished every book, I made my mom go out and by the next one for me. I really liked the books but I so sad when I found out that was the last book. I really think you should continue the story and make a fourth book. It would be a really good book, and tons of people would buy it.
Thanks for reading my comment and PLEASE make a fourth book
Emily
Hey Patrick,
I'm in the middle of Monsters Of Men and enjoying it very much but I have a few questions.
First: Are Ben and Cillian meant to be a gay couple? Or does it just come off that way? Because it seems to hint that they are gay.
Also, is The Return a girl? It never really comes out and says either way but I kind of assumed it was a boy until I think it said something about The Return's "one" being a boy.
I'm asking because I was debating this with some friends and we couldn't figure it out...
Hello Patrick,
I run a humble little Club of Books in Brighton down by the sea. Each moth we have a democratic vote on a different theme or genre. Last moth was the After Life and this month is Child/Adult.
Our group voted overwhelmingly for your book - you beat Shaun Tan, Antoine de Saint-Exupry, and Brian Selznick - and have had the last month to gobble up your book The Knife of Never Letting Go.
I've never seen a bunch of twenty-something adults digest a books so swiftly and ravenously.
Anyway, a request is in order if you don't mind...
We're meeting up tommorrow night to delve into your book and its characters. We were wondering if there might be any possibility of you supplying us with some questions/ideas/prompts or even a cheeky phone call?!
If not no worries. We thank you for writing such a wonderful book regaredless.
Thanks again
Club of Books
Well i must say that these books were amazing. there needs to be a fourth book even though its a trilogy. PLEASE PLEASE PRETTY PRETTY PPPPPLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSEEEE will you make another book so that i find out what happens. :( i like cryed at the end. i luv this series thooughh it was AWSOME. :)
How do you thing it would work if someone made a movie out of your books? For some weird reason, I always think of books visually and in detail, kind of like in a movie.
Then I think of writing a script, but someone always beats me to it. I'm probably being to ambitious, but I haven't found a better trilogy yet and I dread the the day when I will finally finish reading the Chaos Walking series.
Hey Patrick,
Sorry i put in all those spoilers i was meant to send a letter to you as i had to write and letter to an author for my English class and i instantly chose you obviously ;)but i couldn't contact you until i found out that i can send you a message on your website. I LOVE YOUR BOOKS!!i've read the chaos walking trilogy and its brilliant i especially love Wilf and his oxes, i'm looking forward to reading a monster calls:)
So i just wanted to say YOUR AWESOME AND DON'T FORGET IT i love reading and your the best author and trust me I've read some pretty fantastic books but yours woah yours are miles ahead of any other books!x
Hi Patrick!
Just here to say how amazing Chaos walking was for me.
I borrowed the first book from my friend-
(Which i intend on keeping :P)
And continued to read the last 2 books from the library.
Quite sad i could not keep them!
I really enjoyed how in the trilogy you had it all from Todd , Violas and (Dont want to say any spoilers)
Point of view. Having various grammar and spelling mistakes to describe Todd's intake on the world.
If there is any chance of follow up or side books.
And any chance of you selling the rights of the movie.
Another author called Darren shan had wonderful books but i was incredibly disappointed by the movie.
When the books ended i was filled with emotion of how (someone) spoke.
Just popping round to list my opinion
-Harri
Hi Patrick,
we are very pleased to produce and release the German audio book "A Monster Calls" ("Sieben Minuten nach Mitternacht") and hope to see you in Munich, soon.
All the best!
Bettina (from Der Hoerverlag)
Again, it's me, to inform fans who are not following you on twitter, almost french fans, that there is the cover of Le Cercle et la Fleche, who is absolutly... WHAAOU! http://www.librest.com/spip.php?page=fiche&type=livre&noNotice=1172997&auteur=Bruno+d
When I saw it, I saw these eyes, oh my god these eyes! An amazing face, of course beutiful, but It's like that that I imagine viola =D
Have a nice day, Cheers!
Your biggest french fan 4ever!

I just wanted to say what an amazing writer you are. I'm pretty sure I was the third person to read The Knife of Never Letting Go at my library. I read the book in one night because I couldn't put it down. Your writing was just spectacular. The emotion was written so simply yet I felt I knew exactly what you meant. I have to admit I hated you at the end, but I have loved the other two in the series almost as much. However, I read them all that quickly so I feel I may need to reread them so I can get all the details. I would also like to mention I started the reading craze for your novels in my small town. :)
I am turning 18 in just a few days. Although I'm still young, I feel that I'm saying goodbye to my childhood in many ways. Reading your list of unsuitable books for teens made me feel as though I may have missed out. I'm thinking of having a reading marathon to catch up on all that I've missed.
Thank you for your creativity and guidance on inappropriate novels.
Hey,
I enjoyed your books so much, I thought they were amazing!
These books were really moving and I really hope you will write another :)
Hi Patrick,
Delighted to hear your making your way over here next month, I'll do my best to be there, might even bring a friend that I recently introduced to Chaos Walking.
Looking forward to it,
Finbar
Hi, agian. :) I'm like a big fan, and I recomend your books to everyone. Though, I'm a bit disapointed in my sister who refuses to read the trilogy just because of grammar and spelling mistakes. :( But other than that, only one friend of mine has read them and she really liked it. She reads everything, though.
Anyways, I just reread the series. My school is big on future careers and preparing people for them, and it was during when I was rereading your books that I made a decision. I'm gonna be an author. I enjoy writing and reading, but rereading your books made me realize that this is what I want to do. So like thanks. :)
p.s. Both times (when I was reading Chaos Wlking trilogy) I cried... in every single book. One crying sesion for every single book. :) And I also hyperventalated. Your books... no other book compares to your books.

Hi Patrick,
I don't usually do this sort of thing , but having just read your top 10 unsuitable books for teenagers to read in the Grauniad(sic) I just had to say I re-read 'Jitterbug Perfume' last year ...I'm in my grey haired fifties now and it may have been a nostalgia trip, but far from doing any damage to my love for the book it re-energised my batteries... I agreed with what you said and understand you'd wanna leave it there ... but I couldn't resist letting you know it is still a power for the good with us ageing 'Pan's' too... all the best Ray M
P.S. I have started growing BEETROOT in my garden ! Whatever next?......
hey Patrick, this may sound strange and you may have already done it, but please be carful who you sell the movie rights to for your Chaos Walking Trilogy to. i think the booking are amazing, i've read many books and those are my favorite. i don't want a movie to be made based on them and have it turn out like twilight or something. PLEASE make sure that somebody good gets the rights or don't sell it at all. please e-mail me if you can once you read this and again, i realy love your books!
The trilogy made me cry. And i know this is stupid, but why do [edited for spoilers]??? The third book kind of depressed me. I love these books so much. Thank you for reminding me why i want to be an author.

Hello!
First off, I would like to say that Chaos Walking is by far the best book series I've ever read! I've never gotten more emotionally involved with a book series than I have with this one! When [spoilers, sorry], I seriously layed in bed and balled by eyes out for at least 15 minutes. The way you write is amazing, the characters are so relatable and you portray emotions beautifully. I've read the entire series three times from the public library, but I just bought all of your books so I could have them near me whenever I get the urge to read them again (which I have a feeling will be very, very soon.) You're amazing, and please, please, please keep on writing! (:
Hello!
I would just like to say that I adored the Chaos Walking series. I've read it five times in under a year. (And currently reading again)
It was beautifully written and just pulled and tugged at my heart strings. With its deep plot and characters just exploding with life.
I have always wanted to write a book. Something that made people cry and laugh and stirred something inside them that they themselves didn't even know about. Your book did just that to me, and it really truly inspired me to write and do what your book did to me to others.
My goal is not to make a bunch of money, but just to write a good book that people will be willing to pick up again and again and still react to it like they did the first time, only loving it a little more with each read.
I've always thought that was funny though, how something as smile as words on a page could do that. Words making people feel such emotion over something thats not real but all the same is a real world. A real world with real people.
How amazing it is for you to be able to breathe such life into a book.
Thank you for inspiring such a thing in me.
I'm writing my first well thought out story that will be completed thanks to you.
Your Chaos Walking Series is stunning. I could go on forever about it, but I'll end it here.
Now, I feel obligated to describe my feeling of the trilogy.
In the first book I wanted to throw it away and never read it again. I could see the heroes making the right choices and still failing.
Book two: Every effing page I turned I did it with such fear in my heart of what I was about to read (And I was right.)
Book three: After you've been training us for two books we just knew that everytime someone said the word "peace", "love", "happiness" or "future" the worst was yet to come.
But I still feel that even if I've read soooooooooo many books, this trilogy changed me. So Thanks.
Hi...I just finished Monsters of Men and I just wanted to say that it is completely impossible what you did...! After reading the last (damn) phrase I was sure I hated it. And then I just knew I loved it. And all I have to say is that your books are great I really, really loved them. I loved Todd and Viola and MANCHEE for whom I wept at night and I just knew you wouldn't give it a rest not even in the end. But that's why we love you.
Love,
Yuj.
PS: I really cried for Manchee.
PATRICKKK i love your books!!!! they are amazing. i read them all in 4 days. But i just wanna say, PLEASE make a fourth one. [spoilers, sorry] . IM DYINGGG PLEASEE :D
you rok
lauren
Hey :)
This is the first time ive ever written to an author Xd i really liked your Chaos Walking Triology., i just finished reading monster of men an hour ago and i was wondering if your going to continue!!! an ending would be awsome even if its not as big as the other books. i want to say thanks for such an amazing and suspense filled book! Xd i spent so many hours under the covers and (doing hw*) reading it :P so yeah :)
Thanks for it XD

P.S But you cant make war personal, I say, or youll never make the right decisions.
And if you didnt make personal decisions, you wouldnt be a person. All war is personal somehow, isnt it? For somebody? Except its usually hate.
-I agree with that one person, I like books with proper ebdings and ( it wasnt a bad ending)
I wish had added a epiloge
You should make a fourth book like the [edited for spoilers] xD Me such a girl lol
Hello, Patrick
While looking through all the visitor comments, I saw a whoooole lot talking about how the ending of Monsters of Men was sub-par or unfinished, which I find ludicrous. I thought the ending was the best I've ever read for a trilogy. There's just so much hope in that last little part.
Have you read What's Eating Gilbert Grape or The Unnamed? Seriously great books, those are. Anything fantastic you've read lately that hasn't been posted on the Journalism page?
Hi patrick, me again,
Alot of people have asked whether the 'Chaos Walking' trilogy will become movies, I was wondering if you thought Noise could be compatible with the big screen and if this is be something you would be interested in. ( I think some of it could be achieved with voiceovers but I don't see how they cud show someone's Noise being 'red' or 'pink' to show emotion)
It's me again, even I talk you a lot on twitter.
If I write here, it's because I don't have any letters to explain [on Twitter] what I feel, on this stupid website [Twitter]! =D
Not so stupid, because it's why now I can communicate with you a lot, and I do love it. That's why I want to thank you again, to be so near of all of your fan, all around the world. I learnt you play Diablo, and I almost cried ( Sure, I'm joking, but I was not far!). And as I said, I promess to wait, even it will be difficult, for the part 3. Sniiifff ='(
Your BIGGEST FRENCH FAN
Ben' =)
I just came back to say what i forgot to mention.
YOUR BOOKS ARE AWESOME! I have bought them and left them in pristine condition. I get angry when anyone touches them. And every time someone does, I try to send a VIOLA! to them through my brain. And they flinch, although I think it has more to do with my glare then the mind punch. I love your books although I wanna read more and I get sad when I remember that there will be nothing more to read about Todd or viola. By the way we never find out if Todd and Viola are American, French, English, German , Russian, Indian, or what?
"War makes monsters of men" - Todd
I have to say that I'm disappointed in the last book of the Chaos walking trilogy. I feel cheated.
It left something more to be desired. I wanted to know what happens when [spoilery questions, sorry]
I want the answers to all these questions and I was disappointed when I did not find out at the end of the book. I feel cheated by this book all the while reading and wondering if [spoiler] and then [spoiler, again, sorry] at the end just sucks.
I hope there's a fourth book although this is a trilogy.
Your Fan,

I put the first put down after 50ish pages, completely weirded out. I left it, but I came back.
I FINISHED the first book, threw it down, still completely weirded out, and decided not to read the rest of the trilogy.
But you had gotten to me! Not two days later I realized I HAD to know what happened to Todd, and I finished the second book from start to finish, heart racing, palms sweaty.
And then the last book. Pure brilliance. The most original series I've read in a long time. Now I know why I was so weirded out - I could not handle the awesomeness!!! Thank you!
I REALLY hope this series becomes a movie!! Please say it is!
Must make book 4 for chaos walkin i beg you IT wpold be the best effing book ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Patrick,
You are a fantastic author, your trilogy 'The Chaos Walking' are the most amazing books in the world. The storyline is great how Todd and Viola build a relationship and save each other on several occasions; they go through a lot and sometimes near to death. The story was breathtaking, especially when [quite a lot of spoilers, sorry, but I did read it! -- PN]. It would be amazing if there was another book coming out, myself and my friend would be one of the first people to buy it and compare what we think about it with each other like we have done with your previous books. I'm trying to get most of my friends to read your trilogy so they can enjoy all the emotions I had when I read it.
Me and my friend have both fallen in love the characters and we don't want it to end. The last book, monsters of men, finished with something we don't get. I was thinking it was just going to be another cliff hanger like in the other two books, but it wasn't. It ended with [spoiler, sorry] Are you ever going to write book 4 for the series? And if you are the how long would you reckon it would take to write?
Please reply back, It would be a great honour to know if there was another book.
From Your Biggest Fan,
Yasmin
hi,
I am in the middle of 'The Ask And The Answer' and already think that both the first two books are the best books i've ever read.I've recently been hearing that there is going to be a chaos walking series of films and wondered whether it was true, if it was true the films would be the third best ever (after the sleeping and the book series). Thanks!
Hey Mr. Ness! I cant express how huge a fan i am! Love your books; you are a GENIUS!
Um, just wondering, is that a Laputa robot you are standing next to?!? Like from Castle in the Sky?!?
Thatnks for bringing me back to reading. I am 38 and my teenage daughter intoduced me to Chaos Walking. Wow....I have read alot when I was younger....I can safely say these are the BEST books i have ever read. My daughter and I are SURE there will be a fourth book....right...please????? I know the "jacket" of Monster of Med says conclusion but I refuse to subscribe to that nonsense! LOL! You are extremly talented and if I was your mamma, I would be so proud. THANKS AGAIN! Now get to writing [edited for spoiler-y suggestions; thanks, tho!]
Hi!
I'd just thought I'd leave a quick message to say congrats on A Monster Calls,
I wish you all the best of luck and I can't wait to get my hands on a copy as soon as I can!
-Mia
Thank you for writing the Chaos Walking series, it was not only an amazing read, but thought provoking and and insightful. With everything going on in the world today it was nice to see a young adult novel that actually made you think about all the issues, stresses, and hope too, that are so much bigger than us. The powerful connection between Todd and Viola is refreshing as it comes from not just their hearts but their souls. You have found that incredible balance between a story of two people finding love and hope in each other, and a story of two people fighting against unbearable odds. Thank you for respecting young adults enough to write a young adult novel that makes readers think and relate to the world that we live in.
Hi Patrick!
Just wanted to say that I am so excited over your books. I read the knife of never letting go at the end of last year and I haven't been so utterly addicted to a book in a long time. I have the second in the series waiting for me on my bedside table, i have been saving it as its special :)
I'm going to start it as soon as i've finished A Monster Calls, which I am half way through and absolutely love. I am a bookseller and so am very lucky to have a proof copy. I was so happy and surprised when I saw it as I hadn't looked into what you were doing next, seeing as i'm still on the chaos walking series. Illustrations are just brilliant.
I have sold so many of your books purely due to my over excitement about them. People see how much I love them and take them home. I even have people coming back in to thank me personally as their mum, dad, brother etc had bought it for them on my recommendation and they now love them too!
So, to conclude, good job :)
and thank you
x
I'm obsessed with your Caos Walking series. I'm not gunna lie. I literally judge books by their covers (and titles...). The Knife of Never Letting Go not only is the most awesome title ever but the title was intriguing. I checked it out from the library, finished it in about a day, and waited eagerly for The Ask and The Answer to come out...and so on. Now that the series is over. I have one thing to beg of you. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get someone to make the Caos Walking series into movies! I've been waiting to see if it would happen on it's own...but I'm impatient so I'm going straight to you. =D

Hello, Patrick!
I just finished The Crash of Hennington. I liked it, until the end, when I started to love it. I really didn't identify and sympathize with the characters until the very very end, maybe part 6.
Anyway, I'm having trouble figuring out the theme. My reading teacher at school says that the theme is the author's message in the story, so who better to inquire about said theme than the author himself?
I noticed a lot of things surrounding redemption and rebirth, like Jacki's detox, Jarvis's rejuvinated faith, Luther's survival, and, kinda-sorta, Jon came through in the end...
But then there's the crash, so I'm thinking the theme is relating to our negative relationship with our environment? Yeah, not really sure.
And then, there's so much going on - 8,000 dead, 12,000 more missing in Japan and all of the uprisings in the Persian Gulf. And Gadhafi is still killing Libyans. So I agree with you, it feels extremely silly talking about books.
hey, um, me again :)
you are a living legend to me.haha
and we started doing poems in English class and we had to write a few poems on things we like and i did mine on the Chaos Walking Trilogy :P (don't think i'm weird! i'm just... obsessed)
haha...
here they are:
The Knife Of Never Letting Go:
this is a story
that may get a little gory
as two kids run
from an army with guns
in a Noisy galaxy
you will see
that these two kids can stay alive
armed only with one, single knife
Bombs and guns
they can't run
as people die
from a world of lies.
The Ask And The Answer:
the kids ran
they ran faster
he did all he can
but she was shot soon after
the Prentisstown Army took power
the Answer rose against it
they bombed the town every hour
but then, the Prentisstown Army hit
She was kept alive,
but on the other side
he was spared
but he was forced to fight
the war broke out
all hell was let loose
they thought they could win, no doubt
but who will win, and who will get strangled in the noose?
Monsters of Men:
the war is here
they are stuck in the same spot
the end is near
but the fire is just getting hot
the Answer bombed, the other side was alarmed
but the Prentisstown Army used just as mush fire
She shot a missile when she thought her loved one was harmed
he wasn't hurt, but he was scared and tired
the war kept on
then a third army entered the picture
they thought as one
getting revenge for all the torture
they shot fire down on the city
the Mayor/General controlled the boy, man, and made him fight
"I am the circle and the circle is me"
he heard in his mind
but he found out that was the key
to stop the pictures
to stop the replaying misery...
she fought for him
he fought for her
the lights began to dim
and they fell in love together
the battle slows down
they make a truce
they share the land they found
and the ties on the world get loose
[final stanza kind of gives away the end, but was very good!]
LIKE I SAID: OBSESSED!!
the poems might not be that good (i'm only twelve!!) but i did the best i could
i don't mind if you think i'm weird :P
i just LOVE your books
and i can't wait for 'A Monster Calls' !!!
hope your doing good,
your fan,
Skylar
I was wondering if you could tell me how many words are in monsters of men? I can't find it out anywhere! Btw, I love all three of the books in the seres :D
Hi, Patrick. I'm also a Manchee - last name only, and because there are so few of us in the world (England, Canada, US and Australia), I sometimes amuse myself by googling us to see what we're up to. And I found Manchee the dog. I'm wondering where you came by his name - if, perhaps, one of my distant cousins was your Manchee muse. I got The Knife out of the library and am almost finished it - excellent and original. Really hard to put down. Anyway, seeing the comments here and having read the first book, I'm getting myself reading to hear my name called out at the dog parks my Sally Manchee (bichon) and I visit. Thanks, Patrick, for writing.
Hi Patrick & Robot~! *Waves*
I've just finished (litterally) the first book of the Chaos Walking trilogy of yours, 'The Knife of Never Letting Go', and let me tell you: I'm now sulking and buying the second book to read on my eReader. Brilliant. The book was uterly brillant. It had everything I'd want to read in a book. I can't wait to read 'The Ask and The Answer' & 'Monsters & Men' (Oh, and the prequel 'The New World'). I know they'll be just as good as the first one. :)
Hi, Mr. Patrick Ness,
Mr. Ness, I would like for you to email me back because I would like to talk to you about the series you have written. My current email is inuyasha1298@yahoo.com or the one i put to comment so please contact me back :)
Sincerely,
WolvesBite
Hi Patrick,
Firstly, we all have a MASSIVE credit to pay to you. You are a genius! I loved all of your characters from the beginning to the end, and wow, what an awesome trilogy!
I also cannot believe you made me cry with your books! I've gotta say that I was upset with the ending of 'Monsters of Men', and I would love to find out what happens with Todd, (who I adore) and Viola (who is simply amazing) however, I also really like your ending to the trilogy because it was different from the other books that I read - they were all explained and justified. Another thing - PLEASE do NOT make a movie! These books are magic the way they are, and a movie, in my opinion, would make these books seem cheap. I like the way you didn't really describe the way the characters looked - me and my friend Sam (commented below) had completely different versions of what they looked like! Sam described the characters in ways that other people thought alike (e.g. Viola had green eyes) but I honestly made it completely different... I made Viola have black hair; which I know some other readers who are also obsessed with the series, will hate:D last thing, (sorry) I LOVE MANCHEE. I appreciate you and your writing SO much. Thank you, Mr Ness, for bringing us this amazing series.
Gemma
:)
Is 'A Monster Calls' out on 5th May in Ireland as well?
P.S. Forgot to say happy Paddy's day!
hey Patrick,
i'm 14 years old, and i'm currently reading "Monsters of Men", the last book of your trilogy. i have to say, all three of the books have completely inspired me, and they are seriously the best books i have ever read. my favourite has to be the ask and the answer though, it really ties up the whole trilogy!
i just wanted to post what i think the todd and viola look like if they were real, juuuust in case you decide to make a movie about it, i hope you read this and keep it in mind! :)
Todd: in the first parts, before Monsters of Men, i imagine him to be tall, slim (not muscely, not weedy), brown hair (quite short, but has a bit of a fringe) and round brown eyes. Then, as the movies progress, i imagine him to grow taller, have a stronger jawline, and gets more muscular. I imagine him to be wearing a tshirt and skinny jeans, with converse, if the film was to be set in modern times.
Viola: long, wavy blonde hair, with green eyes. a slender face, and a strong jaw line. quite slim, with unending bravery and love for Todd. quite tall aswell, but not muscular. i imagine her to be wearing a vest, skinny jeans and trainers, maybe with a baggy hoody.
I've been thinking about that for a while, and just wanted to share my thoughts with the author of my favourite books!
Thanks,
Mollie(: xxx
Hi Mr Ness,
Just to say, as on twitter, Happy Patrick's day! Even I don't really know if it's the words to say it =)
Your biggest french fan
Ben'
I have just finished your final book of the Chaos Walking trilogy. Now that they're done with and that you have, you HAVE to please please please make just one more to finish it for good so that it doesn't hurt so bad to put down a "good read".
your a ledgened. i love the knife of never letting go series
Thank you so much for the Chaos Walking trilogy! Read them back-to-back, absolutely loved them, and just recommended to another friend, who immediately went out to buy the first books. I hadn't been aware of "The New World," though, so thanks for mentioning it on your blog post. I'll be reading it on my Kindle tonight! Thanks again.
i finished the chaos walking trilogy just yesterday. those books were so gripping and beautiful, i couldn't stop reading them. once i finished the first book on my eReader, i immediately had to buy the second (and after that, the third) because i couldn't wait to find out what happened next! yesterday when i finished the final book, i bawled my eyes out. but then again, i bawled my eyes at parts in all three of the books! i really, really think you need to come out with another series. i think i'd die from happiness if that happened. i enjoyed reading the series far too much, and it coming to an end.. broke my heart. after experiencing everything, going on that "journey" with viola and todd and it suddenly coming to an end just makes me feel like it ended too soon. if anything, please consider making a separate of what happens after the ship lands and new problems that may arise and the relationship between todd and viola. please please. :)
thanks!
Hey Patrick!
Just finished your chaos Walking trilogy and they're great! I couldn't put the book down I almost cried when I finished them! I wish there was more than 3!!!!
By any chance will any of your book be going into a Movie? :) It'd be great if they did!
Hi Patrick
I just had to pass on the lovliest moment I had the other day. As I walked by my teenage son's bedroom and glanced in, there was my 17 year old very cool teen and his 16 year old (non reader) girlfriend sitting up in bed, him with his nose in "Monsters of Men" and her ensconced in "The Knife of Never Letting Go". No chat, no texting, no sex - just their very own private Patrick Ness book club! How cool. Thank you. I love it that I have the same favourite author as my son now.
Hi Patrick,
Delighted to get the reply from you the other day (and if you like Irish names, I tell ye, you won't find a much more Irish than Finbar:)).
I've noticed some people have struggled to cope with the ending to 'Monsters of Men' and for anyone who is, I'd say read the very last line of the third last page and the very last line of the book, maybe I'm wrong but I find them suggestive.
I was wondering, do you know if their will ever be a movie of the Chaos Walking series? I think it would make a very good movie, and I would see it. Hopefully one day their will be one!
Hey man
I read a review of Monsters of Men recently, and it sounded interesting enough to read. So obviously I had to start at the beginning of the trilogy and holy moley... these books are awesome!! I'm trying to put off finishing 'Monsters...' because then it will all be over.
Keep up the fantastic writing.
Hi,
Firstly, I realise that almost anything I put here will have already been said or asked, so sorry about that. Anyway, I finished reading the Chaos Walking trilogy just under a week ago and have been thinking about the books since. I decided to visit your website in order to find out more about them and whether there are more on the way.
I was therefore pleased to find the prequel you wrote, The New World, which I also enjoyed reading.
I love your unique writing style - Chaos Walking must be the only series of books to be written in 1st person, present tense and from the perspective of a semi-literate boy. I think this must be what makes them superior to other books.
I put your books above His Dark Materials and Mortal Engines, which I previously thought of as unbeatable. Plus, I think I like the rather open ending to yours. (I won't say any more due to spoilers). I have thought over the trilogy and cannot find any flaws at all in the plot because it's so well thought out.
I realise that I have written rather a lot - I'm sorry - so I'll wait until some more people have written comments before writing any more.
Thank you for your great books - they have enhanced my life over the past few weeks.

heyy again, i just saw on the internet a painted pic of viola and she looked farmilair, then i relised;
SHE LOOKED LIKE ME!
i have brown blonde hair, green eyes, tall skinny not to tanned nor not to pale, and im still young. and i was like wow. if you ever make a movie, could i plz be viola? i am interested in an acting carer and i am very good at it beacuse, at only 12 years old i got i got into the school production with three roles when half the school auditioned. if u ever do can i plz plz plz be viola?
p.s. come to australia QLD!!!! it would be an honour to meet you
thanks xx
heyy, im not anyone speacail but your books are the best books ive ever read! (and i read ALOT of books!) the books are realistic and are they are so emotional. i started reading the triology when i was 11, (late 2009) my father and 3 siblings were stuck at the airopprt for 14 hours so dad gave me some money and i got the ask and the answer, when i read the first page i shut it quickly not wanting dad to see it. but very soon i was in to it. about a week of nonstop reading in new zealand i got the knife of never letting go, after that i had to wait a few anxouis months to finialy get monsters of men, (which is my fav) after i had finished that i was like, "what do i do now?". so when i heard of the new world, i was over joyed! and more recently a monster calls, which sounds good. im saving up for it now. sciene then i have read the triology over and over and over and- well you get the point. in fact im up to pg 430, chap 40 now. my favorate character is viola. she is brave, and smart. i recently sent u a letter asking something of you, could you please reply when you get it. i dont want to be a nobody... i also am on twiter, i dont no how 2 work it cuz im mostly on facebook, so you and lady gaga are my only friends or what ever you call them on twiter, lol. anyway i have got to go, school tommorrow, nooooooo! seya,
Hi Patrick,
I picked up "The Knife of Never Letting Go" and I just couldn't put it down. Then I started reading "The Ask and the Answer" and it was almost attatched to my hands! And well when I got my hands on the conclusion in the series, "Monster of Men", well I was overwhelmed. I read your whole series in just under four days and I plan to read it over again!
You are a BRILLIANT writer and I really wish I could meet you and shake your hang for your amazing work. Thanks for being the writer that you are and inspiring me to be just as creative as you (and maybe even MORE creative) in my life as well sa writing this amzing series for kids all over the world to read. And just to put the idea in your head, why don't you think about a new series sa a follow up to Chaos Walking? Just consider it :)
Thanks!
A dedicated reader and friend, Jackson
Dear Patrick
My daughter and I work in a book store in Cape Town SA, and we are huge fans of yours! We have seen on the Fantastic Fiction site that you have a book out called "The New World" - prequel to Chaos Walking. Is this book only available as an e-book, or can we get our hands on a hard copy? We would LOVE to read that too!
Can't wait to read Monster Calls, we are getting really impatient, but are sure it will be well worth the wait. Please keep writing, you're a star!
Pat and Roche
Hi Patrick,
I have nearly finished reading the first book of the chaos walking trilogy, it's amazing. I wouldn't have started reading it if it wasn't for the reading club at school! It's my birthday soon so I have asked for the trilogy as a present. I was wondering, what type of dog is Manchee? and What inspired you to write?
You are the best author ever,
Cath 12(nearly 13!)
ps: Does Arron ever die in the book 'the knife of ever letting go?
pps: sorry for any spelling errors, the computer is breaking!
hi again
I voted for the podcast:) in the guardian
but i think that the top 10 favourite books is going to win so i got my mum to vote with her laptop for the podcast to :)
hope the podcast wins
oh and GOOD LUCK for monsters of men hope is wins Arthur C Clarke award, best trilogy in the world :D
Hey, Patrick!
I've nearly finished your 'Chaos Walking' trilogy! I've loved every bit of it. I think the best thing about the story is that Todd reminds me of myself in a lot of ways; unsure about some people (whether or not you should trust them), strong love towards some one and always in constant fights.
This is by far the best trilogy I've read! I hope someone comes up with the idea to turn these books into films. :)
Oh! I've just followed you on Twitter.com, and I've very nearly finished the last book! :)
hope to hear from you sometime.
Charlie
hi patrick, just wanted to say that im really excited for you new upcoming book, and that chaos walking was the first book that got me interested in literature :)
Dear Patrick,
My name is Finbar I'm a sixteen year old from a town called Navan in Ireland. About 3 weeks ago my English teacher, on hearing I was a keen reader, suggested that I give this Trilogy called "Chaos Walking" a look. Last night I reached it's stunning conclusion and well... your a genius.
As I said I'm a keen reader and I've read books and loved books, there have been books I just could not put down and there were books that allowed my imagination to flourish but never, ever have I read any book that I 'felt' as much as any one of the chaos walking trio.
When I heard on television that someone's "heart had broken " or they had " spoken from the heart " I always dismissed it- "It pumps blood- that's all".
You changed that
When [edited for spoilers, sorry] in 'Monsters of Men', I felt a peculiar, unpleasant sensation in the upper-left side of my chest. I felt it- the anger and the sorrow that [edited] felt.
I have made some half-arsed attempts to write a novel myself. These books have both inspired me and put me to shame. (Thank You). I plan to make some full-arsed attempts in the near future.
I don't know if you'll be coming over to this side of the pond any time soon but if you do, I would love to meet you in person and shake your hand, although I understand you may have no control over your the destinations you travel to.
In the meantime I'll do my best to inform anyone who'll listen about your work. Thanks again.
Finbar
P.S. Congratulations on the nomination, you don't need me to tell you that you deserve it. And is there any reason why some of your characters seem to have such Irish names? e.g. Coyle, Moore, Cillian, O' Hare.
Hey Mr Ness :)
What do you think of the King of Limbs?!
I love it! Especially Lotus Flower.
Oh and, I'm following you on twitter just to let you know. Woop!
Don't know if you remember me but I've commented a few times, to blab about my chaos walking obsession. Sorry about that.
Just to respond to your latest blog, I'm glad you mentioned that about Manchee, because I've always thought he looked like that but my friends all think differently. I know we can all have various images, but it's cool that it sounds like I have the same picture in my head as you. How do you picture the Mayor? Because literally ALL my friends think he's short and fat and grey. But I'm the total opposite. I imagine him maybe mid 40s, black hair and eyes, tall, thin, and deceivingly good-looking. And everything in the books seem to point to that sort of look - I remember Viola thinks in the Ask that he's "tall and thin" and Corinne says something like "I suppose I'll be interrogated by someone less ATTRACTIVE" and that the Mayor at one point is looking at Todd with "eyes as black as slate" or something similar if I remember correct (my friends just sort of ignored that description while reading once they'd set their image of him haha). But the cool thing was, I'd thought he looked like that from the very first book, before any of the description. Even though he's not described at all, I weirdly got that view of him which the Ask just kind of confirmed.
Also pretty awesome: me and all my friends have the same image of Todd and Viola (except they all think she's blonde, I sort of pictured dark brown because some bit at the start of the Ask for some reason hinted at me to make me think she wasn't blonde, not sure why). I think it's amazing we can all think this basically the same, without you even needing to describe them at all. And the fact that I have the clearest picture in my head, even clearer than any books where they DO talk about appearance, to the point where I even have the exact image of how they act. Like, on holiday last year I remember seeing this guy and thinking I recognised him.. Then I realised the way he was walking and how he turned his head to look around, really clearly reminded me of how I imagined Todd. He didn't even look anything like how I pictured Todd does, just something about the way he acted. And I've often found people have jogged my memory in this way. Bizarre.
I need to stop talking now. I could go on for hours, but that’s just me being way too obsessed.
Thank you once again for creating the best series ever :)
Hi patrick, my name is Zoe. You probably don't remember me but I got a picture with you at Wordstock in Portland last summer. I looked really bad in the picture but anyway... I just wanted to say that I can't wait for your next book to come out! Really, I can't wait so I hope it comes out soon. hope all is well... now I'm gonna go follow you on twitter.
HAVE A GREAT DAY AND KEEP WRITING AMAZINGLY!!!
-Zoe
Hello again!
I have officially read the chaos walking trilogy 15 times, and every time the ending hits me harder. Let me just say: You are the best author EVER!!! Your books are so amazing, that no earthling words could possibly describe them! (I secretly think of you as god cuz your books have so much emotion) Also, after reading 'The ask..' I think I'm in love with Davy.
~your faithful (even in death) fan
(p.s I joined Twitter as soon as I found out you were there!)
Hi again !
As I tweeted (A new verb isn't it?) I saw on Amazon that "La guerre du buit" will be out the 2nd of april and I can't wait to red it again, so, maybe understand, too, more things, it's sure. But I forgot one things,(In fact I didn't forget it but we have a limited things to write on Twitter, badly) the pocket version of "Le cercle et la fleche" will be out the same date. Don't you remember? The collection I talked to you last September, who select the best YA's books, where "Knife" was on, so, the Part 2 is on, and maybe I will bought it, even It's supid. But I do want to have all of your books ( I SAID IT'S STUPID! )
Cheers!
Your biggest french fan!
Ben'
PS: When your "new" website will born? I wan't wait to see how it's gonna be! =D And thanks again, to ask me on twitter! You're really really really a very very nice man!!
what kind of dog do you imagine Manchee to be?
First of all i'd like to mention how incredibly unique and well written your novels are, and they really do stand out from your average "teenage" novels. They are so creatively written and inspiring, and i think you were very brave to !!!!!!!SPOILER!!!!----[yes indeed, it was a spoiler] :D
and now i'd like to discuss two things.
1. please, don't EVER make this into a film. Or not without alot of thought anyway. Not that they aren't brilliant books but i think the magic of them would be ruined if made into a film, and i have no idea how "noise" would be successfully conveyed. I just don't think they're made for the big screen, but maybe film producers disagree!!
2. secondly, How is Viola pronounced? Because when referring to the musical instrument i always say (VEE-OH-LA) but when i read the book it seems more natural as (VIH-OH-LA) then again, when her name is shortened to "VI" it always sounds better as (VEE)
so i would love to know :) thanks in advance if you reply, and keep on writing!! a series about the first spackle war would be cool :)
I have read your first book of the Chaos Walking trilogy and have just started the second one. The first one was the best book I've ever read! It would be a great movie. Do you think that will ever happen? James (12)
Hi Patrick,
I really must apologise for not looking at your site for the past few months! AHHH! lol. I also remembered that a year (and a day) ago, when you were in Melbourne, I met you at the state library. Honestly cannot forget that day! AWESOME! and coincedently I was going to ask if you were on twitter, then I saw your site. haha.
I have to say, almost a year on, no book I have read, has compared to the Chaos Walking trilogy! Can anything beat its epicness? (Rhetorical question...)
Adrian :)
I would give anything for an answer of what happens [next] to Todd and Viola. Honestly, I would without a doubt give you my apartment, my TV, my X-box, my whole book-collection and the rights of the 100 000-some words I've written in my own book (in Swedish though so sorry for the grammatical and vocabular errors) I've written by myself, for a continuation. It was six-somewhat months since I read Monsters of Men and I'm still not able to put the ending of my head. I beg you, please please please, give me an satisfying ending so I can sleep without thinkin' of Todd and Viola all the time. I really mean it. I just turned twenty today - I've finished writing my first book and have started on my second a couple of weeks ago. My goal isn't to get published - it is to some day write something as moving as your Chaos Walking books. I'm OK if just three people read it as long as they love my books the same way as I love yours. Whether or not you give me an answer I'll love you forever! You will always be what I aspire to become.
//Philip (aspiring Swedish writer.)
I love Chaos Walking, I love your writing style, and if I had the time, I would read the series all over again. But, I have to say, why would you [edited for spoilers, sorry]? I bet you get that a lot, but it's a question that must be asked. Why? At least give us something more than [edited]. It was a great ending and an ending that got you thinking, to the point where you made up your own ending. Sometimes that's what this world needs, to be creative and come up with our own ideas. But your series are so exciting they have us falling out of our seats. After all Todd and Viola go through, we need closer. We need to be able to breath again, instead we keep on thinking what's going to happen next. [edited a bit more, sorry, don't want to give anything away!]. Now, I'm not begging, I'm pleading, and I'm not forcing you, I'm just giving you a mere suggestion.
P.S. I'd pleased for you to answer and see what you have to say, if not, that's fine.
Hi Patrick :).
This comment was just to say "hello" to you but it turns out that I have 2 more things to say !
First, I'm happy to learn that a lots of things are going right for you now, new visitors, twitter stuff (i don't have twitter, so I can't "follow" you but if I had it I would definitively follow you to the end of the world ! Well not that far xD ...), the Arthur C Clarke Award stuff (even though I don't really know it, you say it's "Unbelievably cool", so I trust you ! But you don't need it to be unbelievably cool :D) & your leg is healed (my ankle as well ^^).
And, this picture on the left is making me jealous ! You and a giant robot in Tokyo. You have been to Tokyo. I want to go too :D ! Everytime I stare at it as if I could enter the picture & (shake hands with your first of course) travel in Japan ! Oh, and I hope you manage with the japanese language as well :).
(sorry for the mistakes, I think I made a few ...)
Greetings from France :D !
MC :).
My 36 year old sister and myself (31) started our own cross state young adult readers book club. We only have two members and we conduct it by phone! The Knife of Never Letting Go was our first read and I LOVED it. We are big fans of young adult books and I have to say I couldn't put this one down. Actually I listened to it and the "noise" in the audio books was pretty darn cool. I quickly devoured the second and started the third in the matter of days. I typically try to drag out a series with a book in between but I just fell in love with Viola and Todd.
I wanted to give you a big thumbs up for such an imaginative story. I'll save this one for my kids, kids!
I read the last book just finished it and I LOVED IT your writing is awesome and sad a the same time. I was wondering will you make a prologe book or something (Short of course) so we (I) can see what happens to [rather big spoilers, I'm afraid, sorry]
I have more to say.
I am a forty-three year old mother of two daughters, primary teacher, and PhD student. I bought The Knife of Never Letting Go for my eleven year old for Christmas. She's not yet interested in it but I read it right away. And as I read it, the Ask and the Answer, and Monsters of Men, I cried my eyes out from some deep place of knowing and remembering.
I cry when I read truth which mirror my experiences, what I feel and what I know, but have struggled to find the words to express. I find fiction is the best source, especially with the extraordinary.
Your stories are extremely philosophical and reflective of current phenomena that are still considered fringe experience. No wonder they have had such success.
The metaphors/references you use to write of an imagined future new world speaks of the past, present, and future in this time.
I would love to learn about your writing process and how your stories come to you, eventually growing into published works.
It would be great if you could write a post about that!
Patrick, I'm on Monsters of Men now. I put a comment here a couple of days ago, but I had to come back to tell you that I think your work is just so damn good. I'm excited and inspired by the story and the story telling and I've been telling everyone! Can't stay any longer now, I have to read on!
Hi Patrick!
I saw uou're on twitter, but I don't really understand this wbesite. Do you see the things I want to tell you in, cause I "follow" you, but they say you wan reply cause you're not following me. Complicated ? I don't know, but I think so =P
But it's super for me to see all the little sentences, funny, on your page.
Cheers!
Your biggest french fan!

Hello Patrick. I am an aspiring writer when I am not delivering the mail to your parents. Your dad is always bragging about you so I had to look you up. I will purchase and read your books.
Hello, again!
For some reason, my parents don't want to donate online, so I'm sorry I can't add some money to your page. But I will donate to the American Breast Cancer Foundation over here!
Good luck!
I just finnished monsters of men.
You [edited for spoiler]. Why? Why would you do that?! I dont understand why you would [and again].
I actually cant stop crying, I have actually never cried this much over a book!
I hope you realise that now you have to write a fourth book, because I dont know whats going to happen.
[and lots of spoilers here in the form of questions, sorry]?
You HAVE to write a fourth book now answer these questions pleeaase!
I actually beg of you. I will actually not be in peace until you do.
I actually love your books by the way.
You are such a good writer, that you make me cry at the mention of [and once more]. And I was never like this I promice.
Thanks~
Thank you so much for your amazing books! I loved the Chaos Walking Trilogy, its on my favorite books list! i love viola and todd! they are awesome, and i personally want to marry Todd! so thank you
Hi Patrick! You came to my school 2 days ago to do a talk. I just wanted to say i really enjoyed it. I accidently started The Ask and the Answer first and quickly noticed there was one before that, but I have become quite obsessed with reading The knife of never letting go! I loved your talk and never realised you could ideas from everyday things. I have to admit I was quite schocked at your choice of language but still loved it! Thank you!!
I tried to read 'The Knife of Never Letting Go' when it was first published but I could never really get into it. So when my younger brother announced it was the best book ever I decided I was not going to be outdone by a mere twelve year old and read it again.
I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU [edited for rather big spoiler].
Now I cry a lot at books, but the tears I shed over the poor dog were unending. And I know, I know, it's a work of fiction. But hell, if you can write a book that brings out such strong reactions then you have a TALENT.
Dear Patrick,
I just finished your Chaos Walking triology and found it fantastic, if not prophetic. I hope your stories go on to become films, and that when they do, they are made with the quality your writing and concepts deserve. Hopefully you and your representatives will be careful about who is given the rights to put the stories on the big screen.
I like how you ended Monsters of Men with the possibility of more.
I'm going to start The Crash of Hennington today.
I wish you all the best with your writing career!
Hello, Patrick!
Nice to hear that your leg is feeling better.
For the donations to the Breast Cancer Campaign, there's only a spot for pounds, none for francs or dollars. Is there any way to donate on your compaign page using dollars??
New R.E.M. out in a week, but you probably already know that(a lot more publicity leading up to it than there was for Radiohead's The King of Limbs).
Anyway, it's March. I'm guesing you'll come out with a new EP. Here's mine:
The EP of 3
"The Crane Wife, Pt. 3" by The Decemberists - It's not often that there are trilogies in songs (much less a four-parter). The Decemberists, however, do this. Thank you so much for posting stuff about them on your site. I never would've heard of them otherwise.
And this track is really great. And I didn't want to do two of the same artist in one EP, so nothing from The Hazards of Love.
And, like I said, there are hardly ever any trilogies in music, at least in my library, so I have to resort to picking some kick-ass tracks that come third on an album.
"Time" by Pink Floyd - What an album. This is the stand-out song to me, though. "The sun is the same / In a relative way / But you're older / Shorter of breath / And one day closer to death" Great, great song.
"Hard Enough" by Brandond Flowers - Alright, so I really only picked this song because of its title. I mean, really?! Brandon Flowers has some great stuff out there, and it's really not sexual in any way, but from the titles of some of his songs, you would guess otherwise. Such songs: "Hard Enough" , "On the Floor" , "Right Behind You" , and, possibly the worst, "Swallow It". Nonetheless, it's an alright song from an alright album.
"Computer Camp Love" by Datarock - The best song from that album, no contest (in my mind). Datarock is a really great band from Norway, but they're pretty... Full of themselves.
"High and Dry" by Radiohead - Love The Bends! This song is great, and unlike Brandon Flowers' music, the sexual title matches the lyrics (atleast a little wee bit; "Don't leave me high / Don't leave me dry" can be interpreted in a way different from its sexual nature). In my head, the only better song on The Bends is "Street Spirit." Have you noticed that the last song on each Radiohead album is spectacular?
Sorry if this post was a little bit long.
And every day I read a story from "Topics About Which I Know Nothing," (until I finish it) and today I'll read "Sydney is a city of jaywalkers"
Thank you, and goodbye!
Hey, I'd like to start by writing how much I LOVE your books.
Seriously, I'm 14 and I would love to be an author, I'm trying to write myself, But I'm stuck on how to start it. One of the things that first inspired me was your chaos walking trilogy, the books are WONDERFUL! the most love series in my house, half of my family read them, they are truly fantastic! You created a plot that you should be so proud of, It's complex and beautiful and heartbreaking, and full of action, lightly you handle big subjects, with beautifully created characters, In first person the books don't spend much time describing, but the words you wrote to me are so carefully selected that I can picture each detail in perfection! that's the thing I struggle with, I can't comprehend how you created a book which has the most life in my view, from the first book and the first page, I pictured the whole world you created, and it was wonderful, It captured my emotion, and your books deserve SO much attention!
Normally I'd say if there was a movie, I'd like to play Viola, But I can't, without even describing her, I picture her, in a way I could never pull of. To me she varies, In my mind sometimes she has very very dark red hair, but most of the time I picture Viola with short dark brown hair, A oval face and large almond hazel eyes which are stubborn but bright, In my mind, though this could be wrong, she is very pretty, But not overly. she is beautiful through her personality and strength. That could be all wrong, But what I'm trying to say is that without describing them, you freed the reader to picture all the characters however they wished! That freedom in other books is a flaw, but in the chaos walking book it makes the book even better!
Your characters fascinate me the mayor, Davy and manchee are Incredible!
Hi Patrick,
You came to talk at my school today and I thought you were utterly inspirational. Although I did not get the chance to ask you any questions I was going to ask which part of the guardian do you write and then of course I realised that you were the author of the weekly book reveiws. My family and I often read those and I have actually read Half Brother on your reccomendation. My friends and I really enjoyed your speech as it kept us interested and we were both entertained and shocked (in a good way) at your chosen language and witty comments. I would finally like to say that you are a highly talented writer and speaker!
Hey Patrick,
Yet another question, how do you imagine Todd's accent? Is it similar to any existing accent or nothing we've ever heard? same with Viola's?
Hi Patrick, I absolutely adore the Chaos Walking books. It is certainly my favorite trilogy ever-even better then The Hunger Games, Mortal Instruments and Inkheart.
Each book you write is better then the last. Monsters of Men is actually amazing.
Just wanted to let you know that you are a very talented author :)
Keep writing!
I LOVE your Chaos Walking Trilogy. So much. I read the first one by accident (the cover was intriguing). These books have absolutely joined my all-time favorites including Harry Potter and all Markus Zusak. I haven't read the third book yet, I'm saving it for later, but the first two are literally everything I love in a book. The characters, the haunting end, adventure, trust, loyalty, guilt, morality, war... It's just so brilliant. You are truly incredible for coming up with a series like this. I really hope you're planning to write more. I'm sure anything you write will be fantastic. Even though I read the series a few months ago, I can still remember every detail and nail-biting moment.
yes, I shall break the rules and comment twice in a row. Why is it that we feel this is rude? or don't we, that's just me?.... Any way this is really fan-girly but I think that 'Spanish Sahara' by the Foals suits Chaos Walking really well this may be because I was obsessed at the time of reading but so be it. just a thought....
it's probably been asked before but has anybody brought the movie rights for chaos walking?
Hi Patrick. I started reading The Knife of Never Letting Go yesterday. Love your writing. I'll be buying the rest!
If you feel in the mood, I'm over at The Clean White Page
All the best,
Tina
OMG!!!! This 'trilogy' is amazing, but there has to be another book. i really need to find out what happens to Todd. if you make a film I would love to be Todd, it would be amazing even though I don't know how you would portray the noise but I know it would be awesome.
Your Biggest Fan
Magnus
Hello Patrick
i adore your books. they are so emotional and you can create different personalities for each character.I would love to play Viola in a movie!
Do you ever reply to messages?
Is there a way i could write to you or even write to someone and you would see it?
I really really really love your books!
Hi,
I've started reading your chaos walking series and i think they are brilliant, even though i'm only on your second book; the ask and the answer. I've read practically your whole site, except for some of the comments, i really like it too. It's been especially useful for when i'm doing a presentation on The Knife of Never Letting Go and the info on your site is really helpful and interesting.
I wondered how you came up with your books? Did anyone inspire you or was it totally your ideas? You inspire me to write and read so I hope carry on writing truly absorbing books.
From an engrossed and fascinated fan, Emily.
Hello Mr. Ness !
Just a few words to tell you I've just read the two first books of Chaos Walking and I enjoyed it very very much.
I'm eager to read the third one. Do you have any date for it publishing ? I mean, a date for France cause I'm living there and I read the books in French (that explains my bad English... T.T)
By the way, when do you come to Paris to sign your books ? I'm waiting, waiting,...
Thanks for those wonderful books. Congratulations !
A huge French, Flo'
Hi Patrick,
I just finished reading a journal article about Information Society and at one point the author was talking about information overload. The whole thing was about the differences between Data, Information, Knowledge and Wisdom. It was quite good. And as I just relived 'The Knife Of Never Letting Go' last week because of its release on audio book, your series was fresh in my mind. When you toured Australia last year I was at a few of your events (rep for Walker) and it really what you said about information overload stuck with me. (among other things).
So I just wanted to let you know that your books are still a huge entity of inspiration and awe in my literary life and I am so very excited about 'A Monster Calls'.
Keep doing what you're doing.
All the best,
Michael
Hi patrick ness! i'm just a kid but me and my best friend really LOVE chaos walking! It would be great for there to be film versions, i would love to play viola:D even though im at school! do you reply to messages?
hi
i loved your books and would be reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallllly happy if you carried on the series (and i know a lot of people wouldtooo)...or maybe a prequel series...set in the first spackle war or just a few years before the "knife of never letting go".
i hope you do!! :D
jake
I happened upon The Knife of Never Letting Go on my usual perusal at the NY Public Library and of course the title intrigued me. And How! I'm so glad I picked it up. Reading your book was like being a fourth friend and running, running, running alongside Todd, Violet and Manchee. There were times I swore I was out of breath and when [edited for spoilers, sorry] I literally felt my heart break. You're a phenomenal writer. I haven't even read The Ask and The Answer yet because I'm savoring this triology for awhile. God willing, my writing might be next to yours on a shelf someday! Thanks for the inspiration! -A
Hi
Just wanted to say hello and that your books are amazing but so emotional [edited for spoilers] had me in floods, regardless of this I must ask -beg rather- for a further book, you have left the tale in my opinion on rather a cliffhanger and although my imaginings of what might happen on new world are entertaining doubtless are not a patch on your ideas that i hope to read soon. please say you intend to write another.
Congratulations on the amazing books
Your flabbergasted fan (Amazed doesn't quite cut it)
Alice
Dear Patrick,
I just finished the series! It was the most amazing of any books i have read so far. I was really impressed with all the twists and turns the book presented. I'm just gonna throw out there that i want a fourth book! I really want to know what happens after [edited for spoilers, sorry]. Thanks for giving me these awesome books to read!
Patrick,
Wondering if you have any thoughts on what's going on in Wisconsin? Can't stop thinking about the similarities between Mayor Prentiss and Governor Walker. Walker is pitting the unions against each other by supporting police and fire and attacking the rest. He intensified Wisconsin's budget crisis as soon as he got into office by passing a tax cut that largely supports the wealthy. And now he answers all questions with the same virtuous sounding/above the fray talking points (and in a calm and even voice), "We're broke, there's no room for compromise. We're going to continue forward because it's the right thing to do." So Mayor Prentiss!
I've just finished Monsters of Men.
In fact i finished it this morning and its now about 5:30ish.
But I'm still reeling from it. I wont give away the ending to anyone reading this, but it'll blow you away.
Anyway, the Chaos Walking trilogy has been just brilliant. The style of writing, the plot, most importantly the characters (especially Todd and Viola) are all brilliantly done.
And I cant believe that thats the end...
At least I really hope it isnt. Although I know it probably is.
What I'm getting at is (although you may not have got this, as I've not even mentioned it yet) I really think that if you made a Chaos Walking film, it would be brilliant. I have no idea how you would portray Noise or Spackle or any of that, I just know that I would see it again and again and again.
So is there any chance that we would get some Chaos Walking films?
Thanks
Evan
Hey! I really love your books and i just finished Monsters of Men (like, literally, 5 minutes ago) and I was Googling to see if you had written a 4th book to the series, apparently (is that how you spell it?) not. I was just wondering to see if you were in the process of writing a 4th one? I simply love the books! They are my new addiction!
Re-Hi!
Just to add something. Because I don't know all the radiohead's songs, but yes for the Muse's songs, I'll do my top 10 tracks from this group, too, in no particular order:
-Showbiz, lot of energy, like it.
-New born, piano playing,Matt's voice, guitar solon perfect song
-Histeria, Hard, but so good!
-Supermassive Black hole, (and super sooouls!)
-Butterflies and Hurricanes, cause I love the lyrics
-Uprising, So come on!
-Muscle museum , first Muse's song I heard.
-Stockolm Syndrome, all of the sing is amazing.
-Feeling good, Little plaggia, but even fine
-Eternaly missed, not so famous, but super, If you don't know, just HAVE to listen it =)
So, It was very difficult, because there are a lot of other songs I love from Muse, It's my choice today!
Cheers!
Your biggest french fan.

I just wanted to say that the Chaos Walking trilogy is outstanding and I love it. I have fallen in love with the characters you created and I want to thank you for giving me such amazing books to read (:
