Hi there!

I think before I say anything more, I should be completely honest and let you know that I've wanted to strangle you personally on several occasions--well, every time I've finished one of your books. This is partially due to your cruelly breathtaking endings, but mostly just because the books ended, and I really didn't want them to, and decided to blame you for not writing more.... Right, well, anyway, you're an amazing author and probably one of the few I know of who can write a book targeting kids my age and actually still try to make it a good one.

Thanks so much for writing amazing books, and I apologise for the times I've wanted to kill you in the past, because you really are an asset to this world,

I love your books! It's not like anything i've ever read before. I love when your in Todd's POV and he spells between like 'trix' and other words. I just love that for no apprent reason. To me, it gives Todd character.

Great work!

i just.. wow.
I just finished reading Monsters and Men and I have to say I have never been so moved for a book. When I got to the end I couldn't stop crying, even after I'd put it down. Just.. you HAVE to be writing another book/series. You have to. I'm even still crying now. Your books are so gripping I just can't imagine not having another one to look forward to. They're so good I've been reading them instead of studying for my final exams. I really hope you're writing more.

I have just finished reading the knife of never letting go. I have never enjoyed any other book more than this!! I was on the edge of my seat throughout and the writing was so believable, I even cried when [edited for spoilers]!! I had to take a break for a bit after that to recover from the shock... but as soon as I picked the book up again I couldn't put it down.
I was looking for a new book when my told me to have a look at it, I read the first page and thought "This seems a bit wierd but I'll give it a shot," and I'm so glad I did!! This has to be by far the best book I have ever read and can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy. I keep nagging my parents to buy them for me!!
Thank you so much, it's people like you who keep me from watching tv all summer!!

Hi Patrick :)

Two things are MAJORLY bothering me right now. Actually three things. Two of them you can solve.

Firstly - how do you say 1017. Do you say it 10-17 or One thousand and seventeen or 1-0-1-7 or what??? It only bugged me because we have a local radio station called 10-17 and I kept reading it like that and hearing !10-17 FM" in my head which was rather off putting.

Secondly - I have Knife and Answer signed but not Monster (when your new book comes out I'll really have to use its full title won't I?). This is very distressing because when I met you and you signed the first two I was a little bit hyper... Anyway - when can I get Monster signed???

Thirdly - when I typed MAJORLY it came up with a red squiggly line - but I figure now that that's because I put it in capitals...

Wow - glad I got all that off my chest. THANK YOU for your books (why didn't THANK YOU come up with a squiggly line) and I can't wait for the latest to come out in the UK.

Thank you thank you thank you

Olivia :)

I've got to say that of all the books I've ever read your trilogy comes in my top 5 books! They are fantastic!!! I literally couldn't put the books down! You have such an amazing imagination to put in all these twist and turns in the stories and the whole idea of men's thoughts being heard by everyone else and spackle and everything is just wow!!! Please think about writing another book in the chaos walking series. It would be a huge success and you could write about a lot. All my friends and I want another book sooooooooo badly!!!
Thank you for writing your books and keep on writing so we can all enjoy your amazing talent.

Hi ^^ My name is Mandy, I'm sure you hear this alot but I just want you to know that your Chaos Walking Books are my favourite books of all time.^^ I'm serious, I love books so much, I just love to lose myself in another world and forget about all thats around me, and since I was a kid I always wanted to write, I have read so many books I have lost count, but never has a book touched me like yours. The way you write, the way you portray what you see in your head has a way of reaching out so that the pain the characters feel is so vivid, the love they feel so obvious and beautiful. Like the way, when Todd [edited] in The Knife Of Never Letting Go, and he realises he can't [edited], and the way that haunts him afterwards. . . I cried at that bit. And its so beautifull the way that there is absolutely no doubt that he would do anything at all possible for Viola. I wish I had someone like that xD
I have read The Knife Of Never Letting Go and The Ask and The Answer coulntless times and I never get enough of it, and I seriously can't wait to read Monsters Of Men, I will order it as soon as I can!
Thank you for taking time to read this ^^
And thank you So much for writing such wonderful books.
Looking forward to the next one^^

i read 'the knife of never letting go' around christmas 2009 and have never been so excited to turn the next page. i cried more than i probably ever have when [edited], it really touched my heart. i seriously could not wait until the next two were out and spent all my book tokens on them ;) i have made all my friends read them and the majority have admitted that they were one of the best books they have ever read! So thank you for giving us all an amazing.

I finished monsters of men yesterday (after having to fight to reserve the book at waterstones because i didnt have enough money at the time)
It is my favourite book and the best i have read in my 14 year old life.
it would be great if you wrote a follow up to monsters of men beacuse todd and viola are such amazing characters and i think they could go far , i also want to know if [edited for spoilers, sorry]
(and i rarely ever want to see how the [edited] goes , which is another credit to your writing)

If there is a follow up book ( is it the "a monster calls" you mentioned in your diary?) will todd and viola be the main characters once more.

Once again , i applaud your amazing books and eagerly await for the next one

All due regards,
John

Many congratulations on all your books, Mr. Ness.

One question: Is the 'cassor' allegedly found in Todd's swamp in 'The Knife' the same bird as Australia's 'cassowary'? I've looked it up in several dictopnariesd, but can't find it. Thanking you in anticipation. Is it an Americanism?

Lookign forward to your next books.

Mr Ness, I love your work! Quite exhilarating to read. I just finished TA&TA and am excited about Monsters of Men. I am always shocked but also intrigued by the depravity of men (and some women) in war situations and your depiction was thought provoking and intelligent. The love between your protagonists was truly heart warming, don't we all wish we had a Todd or Viola on our side? Thank you , Gill Bristol

Patrick,
My daughter is 15 and LOVES to read and aspires to be a writer herself. She is always talking to me about the books she is reading and I recently asked her to pick one of her favs for me to read as well. Long story short, I'm half way through 'The Knife of Never Letting Go' and am really enjoying it. As a matter of fact, I ordered the last book of the series from the UK so she wouldn't have to wait for the US release.
As a side note...I was able to get 'Knife...' as a Kindle book and was going back to get the second book as well when I noticed that not only is the second book not available on Kindle, it appears as they yanked the first one. What gives?

Thanks!

Your books are a sensationnal gift for me, as I have been working as school librarian for teenagers since 1990... and a passionate reader since 1965, and just a few times in life I have been so very delighted while reading a freshly published novel. A part of the pleasure depends, obviously, on the art of the translator... but you are the author, and so I MUST be grateful and tell you that the pupils at school, and also my teenager son, are as seduced has I have been with "Le chaos en marche".
BRAVO!!!! and THANK YOU. Keep on writing, that's all we all ask you now.

I just discovered you, and your Chaos Walking trilogy. And let me just say, I was thoroughly impressed. [: I really like your first book [the only one I've read so far, and just finished not five minutes ago].

[I'm afraid I had to edit out quite a bit here about the ending of Knife, sorry]

Anywho, I am looking forward to the next two books. [And anything else you can scratch out for us. :D] Oh, and did I mention I was impressed? I read a LOT, so occasionally I will run across books that don't hold me, or books that just don't move me. Sometimes I'll even find books that just suddenly lose you in the middle. Let me tell you, your book held me. It moved me. And I was only lost in grief over [and a bit more editing, sorry]

So. Til I finish your next book. [:

Re your Edinburgh round-up: "disguising myself"? Oh, I would never do that on purpose... Interesting how nicely that fits together with the comments you made about privacy for today's teenagers. Really, really enjoyed the Edinburgh event. Obviously devastated that the Chaos Walking trilogy has wrapped up, but also really excited to see what you do with Siobhan Dowd's ideas. I've only read A Swift Pure Cry thus far, but she wrote so powerfully, and across such a range - only good things can come. Roll on May! (Um, not literally. I'm old enough now not to wish the time away so literally. But you know what I mean.)

Ah, sigh ... I have just collected, somewhat belatedly, my brand new copy of Monsters of Men. Just coincidentally I happen to be home sick from work for a few days - but not so sick that I can't tolerate the agony and ecstasy of being turned once more into a gibbering wreck by a Patrick Ness narrative - call it catharsis, I guess. I'll send the bill for my therapy!

Seriously, and I am not overly gushy, your writing is, as many have indicated, gobsmackingly good. Here's to a couple of days wondrous and tense escape. I've raved about your earlier volumes on LibraryThing.com - no doubt, judging by comments here, I shall soon be forced to rave happily once more.

Patrick, Chaos Walking is truly amazing. The best thing I've ever read in my life. I love Todd and Viola and their relationship.

If you're reading this, could you please write a note answering this question, Patrick?

Well, I've been reading through the comments and I've noticed a lot of people asking you to do another book in the Chaos Walking Trilogy. I totally agree - we all need to know what happens next!

So please, please could you at least THINK about making another book in the series? They're amazing and if you answer this you would be answering a lot of other readers' questions, too. All my friends agree - I told them about the series! We can't stop talking about it!

So please write another book for Chaos Walking? There's still soooo many more questions to be answered and we all DESPERATELY NEED to know what happens next!

Soooo please please please? :)

Can you at least think about it?
And can you answer this?
Because most of us really need another book in the series!!

Thank you!!

hello. i was at the talk you did today at Edinburgh book festival. I just wanted to almost thank you for writing the story you put into Losing It. after the talk i went to the libary and booked out the book so i could read your story. Not alot of people write stories about gay relationships and i'm glad you had the guts to regardless of what the press might say. I'm fed up of people like me getting stick from people with brains the size of a pea about our sexuality. i hope this is a step in the right direction. towards a place where gay and straight relationships are treated equally but i know that place is far away. thanks for doing the talk and accepting gay relationships

C said:

I didn't hide my name for personal reasons. But I want you to read this, not knowing who I am, whether I am male or female or anything at all!
Can I just say that what you've written is outstanding. I, myself, would kill to be an author. I've written two novels and an upcoming one and I havne't published any. I have so many ideas for them that I just have to wait for them to expand (cos you're right, you need to let an idea expand or it fails). But I want to be an author so, so bad. Not to be known, but to show that creativity is imagination. When you have an imagination, then you're creative. And that's what you did. And when I write, I feel that I can base anyone on a character and they would have no flipping clue who I'm talking about. And it's great. I can get that character to be a loser in my story and everything! And when I write, I take how you amazingly, fantastically style your piece of writing into something that should be global, more than global. Just something bigger than Twilight. Because when I read your book, and oh my when I read your book, I couldn't stop. I read and read and I didn't know what was going to happen next and I couldn't think of the predictable events to occur because I had no clue to what was going to happen.
I just didn't and that's how you made it so famously amazing.
And I can't think of a better word than amazing - Well done C.

But there's one thing. Just one thing.
I want to meet you.
Because I want to be an author, and why would I lie? I, and this is DEFINITELY not a lie, want to get tips from you. Because how you write is why you're famous, and how your creative mind works is why you're famous, and why you're famous is because you're just amazing (see, that's the only adjective) to describe your books. They are indescribable.

I don't know what else to say.
And you probably won't read this.
You'll probably skip a few and I'll be the one that's been skipped and then you won't realise how much I would just love to meet someone like you. Someone so amazing. Because I bet you that what you have said in your book, (the war and stuff) will happen. But will happen with religion.
Because you're that intelligent, that wise, that creative and that much of a logical thinker!
Am I just going on with no ending?

Bottom line is that I want to meet you because if I could ever be as famous as you I will mention you.

My name is Carla and I'm 15 years old. And you're Chaos Walking books are the best books ever.

Hey Patrick,
i know i resently left you a comment but there's been something on my mind that has been bothering me. after reading monsters of men i got kinda depressed because i read the book under 24 hours and because the book is so fast pacing that i couldn't let stuff sink in. now that it has i'm re-reading the ask and the answer and monsters again. i just wanted to know weither you were going to maybe write Todd's mums diary as a book because i was really hoping to hear more about his mum or if you would write a book that showed the Spackle war and what really happened. [edited just a little bit for spoilers, sorry]
out of all the books i've read, and trust me when i say this i've read too many, i'm such a bookwork, your books never get old they still make me have mixed emotions. i've been reading your books since i was 13 and i still can't get enough. you don't understand how excited i am for your next book. i just really love how your books touch people, of all different ages, i don't have any friends who actually enjoy to read. like literally i don't know any 16 year old who would get so worked up about a book but from all the comments that i read on your page i feel like i'm not the only one who really admires your books and your skill to write.
please please please write atleast ten more books so i can add them to my libary.
Christina. [:

Hey there! I'm a young reader, and I really loved your book! I'm starting the 2nd one now! :D
I want to be a writer when I grow up, and I wish to know how you get inspiration to write a book like yours. I'm only 12 so, I have my difficulties figuring what to write and do.
I always loved writing and reading, but when I read your book, it took me by surprise.I liked how you wrote words incorrectly to show what Todd, was REALLY thinking, it made me realize that the story feels more complete and real, when the character speaks like a regular country folk. (We all know Todd isn't regular fellow though.) So I thank you for showing me something new about literature that I never really understood. So how do you come up with ideas for stories? What do you suggest I do to make my future readers never stop turning the page, or tearing up at the saddest part? Thanks for reading my note though. :) I also hope you write more teen books, because I am really don't want to read our school books, because your awesome. Thanks again!!!!! :)

A reader and friend,

Alli

P.S.
Sorry if I made a few mistakes up there, I'm horrible at grammar...

I just wanted to write a huge THANK YOU for the brilliant Chaos Walking series. I found the second book in the teen section of my local library and had to resist getting the other two because it clashed with exams and I knew that reading your books would be prioritised over revising for these really important, end of year, medical exams.

I have sinced recommended them to absolutely everyone that I know because they are easily the best books I have read this year (and I read A LOT). I even recommended them to someone I didn't know when I was loitering around my library and watched a woman drift around the teen fiction section looking lost. I asked what she was looking for and she said her 12 year old son and I just had to point to The Knife of Never Letting Go which was on the shelf in front of us. As she turned away she said, "isn't it lovely that you liked a book so much?" (I really don't normally start conversations with strangers in libraries.)

Anyway, I wanted to share that. Brilliant, entertaining and engrossing series. (And my first fan letter.)

Thank you!

Cheers
Karen

I finished reading The Ask and the Answer last night and i just had to say how amazing it was...i'm an a-level student so had to put off reading it for a while to study, but it was well worth the wait. i really love the way you present Todd in this novel-it's impossible to dislike him although he does so much wrong in this book, he does everything and anything for Viola. Your story is fictional, but i think the ideas presented about society, people and relationships and so relevant to today and reality.

hello Mr Patrick

Hi, I know I only wrote a little while ago but I just want to say please write other stories, but please do NOT write an after story to Monsters of Men. The ending was just as good as the others, and if you kept going I think that it would take away from the previous books. You'd also have to think up all new characters and such.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to read more, but I think you left it in a good place. It's good to be able to imagine the future.
Two things I'd like to to know though:
1. What nationality are Todd and Viola?
2. How many years into the future are these stories set?
Once again, you are amazing, I've recommended Chaos Walking to all my friends, and The Ask & The Answer and Monsters of Men are the best books I've read this year.

Hey Patrick,
I've read most of your books but I think the Chaos Walking series was one of your best. My dad thinks I read an awful lot for a girl of 11 but I read The Knife Of Never Letting Go in 3 hours non-stop. I'm an absolute bookworm, when i sink my teeth into a good book I dont stop reading until I finish. I always seem to lose track of time when reading, oh well =). Anyway I want to grow up to be an author when im older.

I've been wondering this for quite a long time now, and can I ask, is some of the Chaos trilogy based on the Nazis and their treatment of Jews?

OK, first of all, i'm only 14 and i know u might have heard people say this a lot, but the chaos walking series are incredible. i love them.
i just finished reading monsters of men, and the ending is something that never crossed my mind. Your books are truely the best. i cant even imagin myself thinking otherwise. i have gotten so close to this series that (i know i sound crazy) when i reached the end of monsters, i felt like my life has no more meaning. before i read monsters, i've fished the knife 7 times, and the answer 5, and they never get old.
Patrick ness u are the best author EVER!!!!!!!
i had something stuck in my mind for a long time, i was woundering if u could write an 'after story' to the choas walking series, maybe something that tells us what happens after.
Anyway, i know that a lot of people would be soo happy, if u wrote an after story, and then i'll finally feel like my heart is healed again
Anyway please think about writting an after story, keep up the good work, and i am honestly your bigest fan.
P.S. you have a lot of fans on goodreads (including me) so maybe you might think of joining it (sorry for asking a lot of favours)

Hello there Mr. Patrick

Another Syrian fan of yours! And yes, I'm one of Raya'an's friends as well. She told me about your sequel. Actually she was the one to introduce me to the world of books, and The Knife was the first book I truly read.
I used to hate reading - find no point doing it. Truth to be said though, your book proved me wrong!
I was massively influenced by the first book. It allowed me to discover myself more and more through Todd's actions. In the second though, I hated the fact that there was less of Todd. But it was still greatly written. Monsters was the masterpiece. Full of thrilling surprises! But hey, I haven't even STARTED complimenting the sequel!
In short, Chaos Trilogy is merely fascinating.
We'd really like to see you and talk to you in person there in Abu Dhabi and I hope it won't take long until a lot of people's wishes there come true.

I thank you for taking some of your precious time to read my comment Mr. Patrick,
Abdulkareem.

Monsters of Men actually made me cry at points, when we get to find out [edited again] i nearly stopped breathing i was so happy that he was [edited]. Just all of the books are amazing, defenatly better then the Harry Potter books and the Twilight books. i even managed to convence my older sister to read your books, slow process but atleast she's read a few pages of The Knife of Never Letting Go. i just wanted to say that i really love the books and i have been following everything on your site since 2008 when i first bought your book. i really hope there will be more books in the future, maybe some romance..? Hi Patrick,

I find your books completely awe-inspiring. You are truly an amazing author. The chaos walking trilogy has got to be one of my favourite trilogy's ever. It's amazing how you write to your readers on such a personal level. How did you come up with the idea? it's totally original. Sorry to go on like a crazy fan, but i so do admire your work. Monsters of men made me cry like a baby, and it's not often a book affects me in that way. I feel such love for the fictional characters that you have created. I am an aspiring author and i do hope that one day i will write books that will grip the readers how you have gripped these people.
Thankyou :D

Hi, I'm probably you're number one fan in Australia. I just finished Monsters of Men a few hours ago and it is honestly the best book I've read this year.
How on earth do you pull the plot together so seemingly effortlessly? You have a completely unique style of writing (using the different narrators and the different fonts), and the books are so fast paced you feel as though you're at the end halfway through them. Also, you miss half of the words because you're trying to keep up with the characters.
You've moved me to tears more times than I can count, from what I've heard I think everyone falls in love with either Todd all Viola, and you are the best author since J.K. Rowling.
Thankyou for writing such amazing books, can you please write more in the future?

Hey.
I posted a comment near the end of july and at first, when I came to check if it was on this page, I thought you hadn't published it since it wasn't right at the top (I thouht it would be there coz it's quite recent). But no, I finally found it in 25th place. That means that since the beginning of August you've had 24 comments!!! That's so cool. I didn't know (sorry) that you were so popular. Well, mainly coz, since I don't live in the UK, none of my friend know the book. But, I mean, it's great for you. You really deserve to be famous. Sometimes, while reading, I wonder how anyone can have such an imagination. And yet keep it so logicall. Your must have a brilliant brain!! :P
I thought exactly the same thing when I read Philip Pullman's trilogy, His Dark Materials. For me, you're both at the same level. Stephenie Meyer's Hos, too. I recommend these books to everyone who loves Chaos Walking.

Honestly, thank you so much. You've brought me hours of pleasure.

That is my favorite scene ever written now. I loved the passion Todd showed for Viola in that scene. I was screaming "GO TODD! YESSS!!!" inside my head as I read. Hahaha. A big "HELLO!" from Abu Dhabi..
I know you've probably heard this a thousand times (or in this case read) but honestly honestly honestly! Your books are phenomenal. I could not drop Monsters of Men. I was so glued to it, it took me a month to finish it. I really had to take in every detail of the story, every climax, every plot twist, and every COMMA! to enjoy it to the fullest extent. Here in the Arab world, books arent exactly the most exciting thing out there. But believe me, your books have definately caught the eyes of many here. I'm arab myself (from syria to be precise), and i have to say your triology is one of my favorites. It really took a new role when it came to Teen favorites (away from the vampire genres). The boys in my school really loved it due to the fact that they could relate to what its like to become a man, what crosses their minds, and what actions pop up when they're put in a certain situation. Things girls, like myself, cant really understand, but actually do.I felt like the moral behind the stories were muted but came out louder than I can ever imagine. Just thought I'd let you know that your books reached out to the Arab world. I wish you'd come visit here, I'm sure a lot of people here would love to meet you. Because when ever I go to the book store to see if any of your books are left, they always seem to be sold out. I myself would love to ask you questions of my own, since im going to be doing a lot of writing myself. WISH ME LUCK! And looking forward to your next book and if your ever going to come visit us here in UAE. Thanks for an AWESOME sequel (emphasis on the awesome)

I loved Chaos Walking! I am a teen librarian and read Knife of Never Letting Go in 2008. Couldn't wait for The Ask and the Answer which I read too fast causing readers brain freeze (ha!) and ordered Monsters of Men from a U.K. source in May because it isn't going to be out in America until September. I highly recommend these books to all of my teen readers. Boys love them. Girls love them. Adults love them. Keep writing for us!

Hi Patrick,
We are best friends living in the US and we have both just finished the entire series. It was amazing beyond anything we have ever read. We both agree that Harry Potter can't hold a candle to Todd Hewitt and his amazing story of bravery, courage, coming of age, war, and love. Every single line had us wanting more. Please keep writing young adult novels.
We were also wondering how long it took you to write the first book, and how long ago did you come up with the idea for The Knife of Never Letting Go? We also want to be writers ourselves and were very inspired by your work and were wondering if you had any tips for us.
You are truly an amazing author.

I've just started The Ask and the Answer, and I have to say, so far, that hasn't failed to please either! Can't wait to read the final one, Monsters of Men!!! Thanks again and keep up the fab work :D Keep hitting us with those fantastic storylines and delicate concepts we are forced to grapple with; the intricacy and complexity of the plot is so amazingly planned out, so ardently written - I can defo see the amount of effort you put into these books. Course, it did pay off!! Hello Patrick,
I know that your Walking Chaos (which is a great name by the way) triology is aimed at 'young adults'. I have no idea if that includes 14 year olds. It dosn't matter though, since I am 14 and I just love it. After reading The Knife Of Never Letting Go, it layed in my head for weeks afterwards. Its originality and poignancy had really marked me. And when I got over that, I spent weeks marvelling about the time when I would get to read your secong book, The Ask And The Answer, which was as hair raising and excentric as your first book. Sadly I haven't read Monsters Of Men yet since I don't live in the UK and will have to wait for my next visit there before buying it but I can't wait. I'm basically chewing my nails off! I'll have to start reading your other books too.
I just have one question: In how many years - more or less - does Todd's and Viola's story take place? I know it's in the futur... but when!
Thank you for your books!! And pleeeease keep on writing.

Oh yes, and I love The Mayor. Well I don't love him but he seems so real. The way he betrays your feelings, tricks you. It's so enraging!!
If I had to describe your book in three words it would be LONGING, FRUSTRATION and FUTUR (I mean Todd's futur, not ours).

Frankie said:

Dear Patrick,

My name is Frankie (Francesca), and I'm only 14 years old, but a HUGE fan of the Chaos Walking trilogy!!

I was reading the shortlist Karnigi books last year at my school, including The Knife Of Never Letting Go, and I must admitt, I saw it and wasn't interested- I have NO idea why- but I didn't read it. A few months later I picked it up off my shelf and began to read. At this point I was a slow reader and finished the book in about 4 weeks. Then I found the Ask and The Answer in my school library, and finished it in again about 4 weeks, however I'm sure I only spent about half an hour/an hour a day reading, as I was busy in rehersals for a pantomime. After finishing the second book, I was DESPERATELY needing to read Monsters Of Men, but at that point, you hadn't finished writing it(;
SO, after some TREACHEROUS months of suspense, last thursday it was my sisters birthday, and my parents always buy the other kids a few small gifts. I saw my presents, and saw a wrapped up book! I knew it had to be Monsters of Men, which it was, so I unwrapped it and began to read. I finished it in a record time of 4 DAYS! I loved every second of reading.

I would say, "THEY'RE AMAZING, MAKE MOVIES" But I think movies wouldn't quite capture the true essence of these PURELY AMAZING books! Because, you see: People say they're amazing BOOKS- not films:\
Quite alot of books get done majour injustices [think I just made up a word] by directers cutting out those all-important sub-plots, and I couldn't bare to see it happen to these beautiful stories.

Another thing (GOSH this essay is LONG), I realised at about page 400 of Monsters of Men, one flipping miraculous thing; I had never seen a single picture of ANYONE in these books, yet can visualise each of them perfectly in my mind's eye.

-Tonnes of admiration

Thanks for signing mine and my friends copies last night at the book launch of Losing It. We all really enjoyed it even though the discussion before hand, at first, was...well...slightly awkward for four 15 year olds sitting at the back amongst a load of adults.

I have never read anything quite like it, and i read a lot!
I really wish there was another sequel but i know that this would ruin the ambiguosity of the last book.

I love TOdd and Viola and Ben and even Mistress Coyle. And in some ways you have to love Mayor Prentiss too, he's quite amusing to listen to, espiecally when he rants.
My favourite of course though is Todd. Who else?! He has his trademark line: "You SHUT UP!" that i find myself quoting most days!
Thank you so much for these books!!

Hello Patrick and fellow robot! I came across The Knife of Never Letting a few months ago in Barnes and Nobles. I was trying to find a few new books and happened to pick it up and read the back, thinking it sounded pretty interesting. Then when I flipped it to the first page and read Manchee's thoughts (Manchee.. :( ) and couldn't help but laugh, I had to buy it. Then when I started reading it I realized I didn't want to put it down and loved it! I almost put it down again when a sapceship came into play.. I was thinking "aliens? Nooo!". But I couldn't be happier I continued to give it a chance and read it! I ended up reading The Ask and The Answer (which I had to wait for because it was checked out at the shcool library.. ugh!) soon after and loved it, too. Sad, thrilling, original, just amazing all around! I just found out that Monsters of Men comes out in Sept. in the US! I'm exteremly excited (though sad its ending)! Anyway, if this has any point, its to tell you I'm a huge fan and you are an amazing writer (coming from being a reader and an unpublished writer ;). I only hope I can someday have great books in print like your's. I also wonder how you came about writing these books.. where'd you get the idea?? your books are great, i read them all, and as soon as i finished the first one, went straight to the libary to get the second, then i had to wait (eagerly) for the next book and got it as soon as it came out. i finished it in a week although could have finished it much quicker, but i wanted to take my time reading the book, especially since its the last of the series, please make there be more! your books are probabily my favourite books, ( and thats sayin something cause i read all the time ) you should definetly continue on the story, ( maybe have a different main character, although todd and viola are great ) please write back!

( p.s whats that new book 'losing it' about? it has some great authors, ( tho your the best! =P) i think i have a faint idea but dont want to mention it ) WRITE BACK!!!

Dear Patrick
I have finished Monsters of Men. It was amazing! But now I have absolutely nothing to look forward to. Everything was wrapped up so neatly at the end, it made the frustration of Knife and Answer worthwhile. But please don't do this again! I have a heart condition and my pulse was racing and my heart was pounding by the time I put the book down. Not healthy I'm sure! Thank you for a series that gave more than it promised in the beginning, a series that never became boring or made me feel as if I wanted it to end. You are a star!

Your Chaos Walking trilogy must be one of the most thrilling and fantastic book series I have ever come across. I live in the United States, so when I found out that Monsters of Men didn't come out until September, I was so disappointed! I eagerly await for the last and final book!

Hey Patrick, here's just a little message saying how much I love your books! I love invading the Young Adults sections in bookshops (even though I'm 12) and The Knife of Never Letting Go really caught my eye. After spending two days reading it non-stop I was totally hooked and bought The Ask and The Answer the next day. I'e told all my friends to read the books and I've just finished Monsters of Men. I cried.
Can't wait to see you at The Edinburgh Book Festival! Alice x

Dear Patrick
I supervise the childrens section of the bookstore, and when I received the first copy of Knife, I thought, aha, an off the wall book that appeals to my strange tastes! It was awesome! I could not put it down and found myself selling it to everyone I possibly could. There have been no disappointed customers! Then, Ask came out and had us biting our nails and howling for more. It was a rollercoaster ride that had emotions doing the funky chicken! I thought it couldn't get any better. I am now more than halfway with Monsters of Men and can't wait to get to the end. My daughter (who is a HUGE fan) has read Monsters already but refuses to tell me what happens!
The only problem we have is that happy customers now want something similar to your work - and we have to say that there isn't anything that can compare! You are one of a kind and we love your work. Some authors are lucky enough to get the comment "It has a slight Patrickness to it" attached to their work, but really, no-one writes like you, with the passion and conviction that you have. Might be a good thing though, we'd all be sitting around reading 24 hours a day!
Thanks so much for everything, you are making readers out of a lot of teens over here.
Best wishes
Pat

Dear Mr. Ness:

I have to say, reading Chaos Walking has been the best choice of my reading life. Strange since I stumbled upon the first book in the library on accident in the new release section. It was instantly gripping and absolutely amazing. And when The Ask and the Answer came out, I spent all my time reading it. As a young writer trying to get published, your books and writing style have influenced me greatly. I am eagerly awaiting the release of Monsters of Men in the US and your US tour

By the way, I wave hi to your robot friend, and I loved the movie he was in.

Sincerely,

Emily (penname Jane)

Hey Patrick Ness/big robot,
*waves*

After reading the Knife of Never Letting Go, I sorta did the opposite to what the book preached and grabbed a knife, threatening everyone to read your book with the intention to - if they didn't - kill.

But yes. I managed to get my father and brother to read it and they both loved it and we had big discussions in the car over what would happen next. It was the first series we've ever agreed on.

Then the second one came along with the mayor, who was such a pleasure to read. I loved Todd in that book, and I loved Viola. But what I liked most about it was the truths in it. I don't want to sound cheesy, but wow, what happened to the spackle/woman echoes what humans in our world have done. I mean what I'm saying is obvious, and no doubt what you intended, but I just thought I'd point out that I loved it.

Then the third book. Wow. That went above and beyond my expectations. It's so hard to keep a series consistently fantastic! You certainly did it. And what a way to end it! It was a satisfying ending and ending a story is so tough to get it right, and please as many people as possible.

I will stop rambling soon, but what I also loved was your style of writng because, really, wow wow wow. So individual and so effective. The use of hyphens and words like 'tho' - ahh so good.

Also, I keep think of things, Manchee! That was the saddest thing I've ever read. He was so endearing! And I think that animals don't always come across in books particularly well, but wow. That was just heart-wrenching.

So thank you! You've really inspired me to become a writer which is always something I've wanted to do.

In awe,

Mimi, 16 :)

Hi Patrick,
Me again, I have a lot to say so i will try to organise it
1) i have your new name which i came up with and then realised it was better than i 1st thought: His/Your Patrickness, Although His/Your Majesty would do as well! :)
2) We started talking about 'I am the circle and the circle is me' and someone (i think it was me) came up with the idea that we should write it all over the walls! Miss Adkins (our librarian) said she wanted to paint the pillars and then we suggested that and then we moved onto: 'i am the pillar and the pillar is me' XD
3) Miss Carter (The english teacher) has sent me pictures of us together XD (which is now my Facebook profile picture) The excitment about the carnigie still hasn't died down (i don't think it ever will)
4) (last one) I set my facebook status as 'I am the circle and the circle is me' it was about 50/50 between 'What?? please explain!' and 'Haha, i get it' it currently has 8 likes and 18 comments!!! once you know the menaing it is quite sinister (and it gets in your head, miss Adkins agrees).

Got to run now and read some more The ask and the answer (my coveted copy!)

Bye

Will

I must confess at first I didn't really get into The Knife of Never Letting Go, I couldn't understand why a guy just smacked Todd in the face and why Todd was [edited, sorry].
But I thought right I'm going to read this damn book to the very last page.
And my god I'm glad I'm stubborn, I pretty much sat anywhere in my free time reading the books.
I just finished Monsters of Men and my mind is blown.
You really did manage to pull me in emotionally :)

I saw the cover of The Knife of Never Letting Go about a week ago and decided on a whim to buy all three titles at once. This has to be one of the best decisions of my life to date, because without a doubt the Chaos Walking trilogy are the best books I've ever read. I finished Monsters of Men about an hour ago and felt compelled to leave a comment thanking you for writing such an amazing story. I'm not normally a very emotional person, but the ending brought me to tears. Again thank you for creating Todd and Viola, two completely believable characters who were so easy to connect with.

Hi there Mr Ness,
I was wandering if you could answer my question on the Chaos Walking Series. Will there be an extension to this series??? I am very intrigued about these books, and they are the only books that I nearly cried through EVER! Also, you are amazing at switching through view points. Another question is, will these books become DVDs? I would love to see them, as I think your ideas are amazing, I would normally ignore the types of book that go from one world to the other, but these books put a spell on me, and I couldn't put them down for days.
Please answer my questions.

Hi Patrick,
My name is Dean and I am in LOVE with the Chaos Walking trilogy. I remember going to the book store trying to find a book that could catch my attention. I saw one book that looked rather interesting, then put it down, because my friend saw The Knife of Never Letting Go. I picked the book up and read the back. To me it seemed pretty interesting. Then I had my show that same weekend, and I SERIOUSLY COULD NOT STOP READING! I was getting into the book, and i didn't talk to anybody on the down time... I was too busy reading! Then our practice tests for school were distributed and I read after i finished my tests. I sometimes scremed in the class, or even gasped. Then it was the second to last day of testing and i finished the book. I remeber dropping the book because i couldnt move! It was the greatest cliffhanger that i have read! Then I kept thinking about the book the entire day! It was in my mind and I had to beg my parents to go to the bookstore. Then I finally got book two which was even more satisfying. I am really excited or book three! I'm totally ready for the war between the men and the spackle! BRING IT ON!

When I began reading The Knife of Never Letting Go, I decided it was the best book I've ever read, and then I read The Ask and the Answer, and then Monsters of Men, and decided I could not split them... they all now have a place on my desk where I can see them- when I look at them I remember the storyline of both the adventures of Todd and Viola- I absolutely loved it!
Thankyou for being so amazing!

Hello Mr Ness and the giant robot.
I've put a comment on here before(10th June)and I was wondering if you have an email or page where you reply to the readers. I have a few questions I'd like to ask and we are still doing our projects on our favourite authors (mine is you).
I'd maybe like to be an author when I grow up or a teacher, actress or someone who works with animals but I'm mostly likely to become an author or a teacher. I have good ideas but I don't know how to start and forget about it and give up. Do you have any tips on how to actually finish a story?

Your books are so thrilling that you are most likely going to be asked if they could make a film out of it. Would you let them? I think you should get the best editor, director and producer living and all of the actors should have won at least 1 oscar in their life. If the people don't offer you that then just say no.

My favourite books ever are your books, some of Michael Morpurgo's work, some of Celia Rees and Courtney by John Burmingham ( but that's because I was read it as a baby). What are your best books ever?

What is you favourite animal? I love all animals but I really want a dog. My parents won't let me and I'm allergic to their fur. Do have pets? Was Manchee based on one of your pets?

I really would like to meet you in real and I can hardly make your tours (New Zealand is a bit far for me). Do you visit schools that often? It would be great to have my favourite writer at my High School. If not then do you have any visits coming up in London?

Sorry for writing so much. I still have millions of stuff to ask you. For now I stop writing.

Eva, 11
I can't paste a smiley face on here but if I could there would be loads.

Our school had a Carnegie celebration party on Thursday, and we had a whole lot of awards that we voted for as a school. Todd & Viola won for 'Best Hero/Heroine', and 'The Ask And The Answer' was our school's choice as the winner! So you're always a winner in our eyes! I've been begging my sister, and she said she might come with me to the Foyles event, where I plan to get my books signed! Oh, and I've managed to persuade her to read the Chaos Walking trilogy, so you'll be getting another new fan very soon! And right now I've used exclamation marks for every single sentence! I've not been having the best week so far, because my mum's been in hospital, but I was cheering for you at school, and it cheered me up for the rest of the day!

Well, I'll talk to you later, maybe at the book launch.

Whenever its one of my friends birthdays i always get them something they like and 'The knife of never letting go!'. Loads of my friends have read it. AND THEY LOVED IT. Its not a surprise though, seeing as, the whole world loves your books!
I am writing my own story at the moment, and i would like to know. What are the 5 most important things you need to know or do to become an outstanding writer?

Best wishes from your biggest fan!!!
Ingrid
ps. How did you come up with these amazing stories!?

Vapzii said:

Yes, I'm back STRAIGHT away. 'Cause I thought of something! Not only was I trying to evade getting edited in the last comment... I have a THEORY. *Looks triumphant.*

Is 'The Knife of Never Letting Go' perhaps... a double meaning? 'Cause how (the mystery guy - avoiding being edited! If this works, 'cause though you'll know what I mean, what I'm gonna say next will just fail...) calls him (avoiding...) 'The Knife' made me think... hmm. Is this something you'd planned from the beginning? 'Cause looking at it now makes me think so...

And Todd is my favourite character, by far. Since I've been reading through the comments and they all seem to like Viola... which I do, but I love reading Todd so much that in The Ask and The Answer, when it switched to Viola I often found myself saying, 'Ugh, go away Viola, I want TODD and you'd better go back RIGHT NOW.' Wow, there goes me failing to not get edited. Yay me if that survived! :D

...

*Looks at time and sees that she's meant to be in bed.*

*Scarpers.*

ASUTYEGIHBBVDGYTRTGDBHJEFDGWEIYTODDTODDTODDRAWRNOTFAIR--

Yes, I just finished reading Monsters Of Men. Literally haven't stopped reading all day, except when my mum forced me to XD. And that was a miserable thirty minutes that was spent solely on worrying about Todd and Viola and it did not help one bit that the sentence the last thing I read ended on was Todd screaming 'VIOLA!' Huh? Can you guess which chapter that was? -____- Just over half way through.

And now I've finished it. I was only just a third through yesterday and have now officially finished it in less than three days. Closer to two. Which was quicker than the others.

But...

You made me CRY. [edited] And hardly ANY books make me cry. Not to mention you already did it in The Ask and The Answer... [beendeadT____T] that scene was so SAD. But these books are so... EPICFUL. (Not a word, but hey.) I'm actually really sad that it's over... they're officially my favourite books in the whole world and I hope for the poor character's sake that it doesn't get made into a film 'cause they'll most likely wreck it and make me REALLY mad.

YOU DESERVE A MILLION AWARDS FOR THIS. This series totally kicked Paolini and The Inheritance Cycle off the top of my favourites list and that's an ACHIEVEMENT, I tell you! I've never felt such strong emotions towards characters in a book and I love Todd to BITS, I swear! (I squealed when they FINALLY [edited again, sorry]. XD)

The ending... well, compared to your OTHER huge cliffhanger endings *stabs ending to The Knife of Never Letting Go to death 'cause that was EVIL* it was the best ending ever. XD But I still feel like there should be more... I wish there was more, actually. I want this series to go on FOREVER.

...I'm gonna stop rambling pointlessly. But, okay, I'm just a teenager, but I love writing and you just inspired me MORE. And I'm really grateful for that because the voice you use for Todd got me inspired. And I write the characters how they'd speak. It's really made my writing so much better and especially the ones who can't actually read... (which is, surprisingly enough, only two. And in separate stories.)

So basically...

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

(Todd 'n' Viola forever! X3)

(Yes, forget ALL about Lee... and his pictures... O___O)

Hey Patrick,
I just recently finished the last book of the Chaos Walking trilogy, Monsters of Men, and I was so upset when I had finished it. I felt like I wanted the books to go on forever. Chaos Walking is by far the best trilogy I have ever read. I doubt I'll find any better books, they were just absolute page turners and it seemed that I had finished the books just as I had started them, time just flew.
Its funny, I found the first book, The knife of never letting go, upstairs of a tiny high street toy shop. As soon as I finished it I went straight to Amazon to buy the next one, and then the one after that!
I thought it was abit of an abrupt ending for [edited for spoilers, sorry] though, after everything thats happened through all the books they [edited], yet, it still makes sence, and I thought it was very clever the way you tied up theyre endings. The ending of the whole trilogy I thought was a masterpeice in itself, the way you linked up everything and how it all made sence. It left the questions in my mind, is [edited]? what will happen to [edited]? And will [edited]? Leaving these questions in my mind, for me, made a perfect ending and i couldnt have thought of a better one myself.
I cant wait to buy more of your books and Im sure you're going to be busy this summer with allot of writing!

Your a genius. You've got to be! I'm 14 and a big reader. I've read so many fantastic fantastic books, but Iv'e honestly never read something as genius as this series.
No book has ever been so phycological, so honest about the minds of people. It get inside your head, it really does, because it's all true! You see people, see the world more clearly than anyone, what's more you have the ability to put it down on paper! There is nothing tame and sophisticated about these books, they're raw and honest and slightly overwhelming!
I was physically panting at the end of the last book because it's so...staggering. It's a masterpiece and should be displayed in a museum alongside the Mona Lisa or in the minds of every human being.
It's mad to have such a raw look into the hearts and minds of the human race.
And the story itself is breathtaking, all the characters are remarkable (particularly the Mayor.)
I'm impressed Mr. Ness, I really am.

I have much more to say but I feel I'd probably just be repeating myself
Congratulations on your masterpiece, and thank you, it's taught me a lot.

Hi Patrick,
I must congratulate and thank you for an utterly brilliant series of books!
I have just finished Monsters of War and I am thoroughly rung out!
I bought Chaos Walking by complete chance when looking at potential Christmas books for my eldest child in 2008. The helpful people at Borders book store (RIP) had written a blog on the dustsheet and I had to buy it. I put the book away to read later and waited a year before I actually opened the book.
I have been gripped on the lives of Todd and Viola since.
I am urging my daughter to delve in, but think that I ought to wait until the school holidays in case she gets as engrossed as I have been and her studies suffer!
Thanks again for sharing your amazing writing talents with the world! I am experiencing the same emptiness that I had when I finished the last Harry Potter book (but without gushing, I think you exceed JKR's writing skills), so please, produce another book soon!

*waves back to Patrick and giant robot*

Hi there Patrick Ness! I'm Brigid and I'm 17 years old. So, I live in the US but I had Monsters of Men shipped to me from the UK (They were going to make us wait until SEPTEMBER and I probably would have died if I'd waited that long!) It arrived in the mail yesterday as soon as I got home from school, and I got reading right away and didn't stop reading once until I finished it at around 11 at night. I even brought it to my sister's middle-school graduation and read it standing up. ;) lol. I couldn't put it down for a second! And WOWWW!!! I don't even know what to say. I've been thinking about it non-stop all day. I'm speechless!

I'm always reading; I probably read about a hundred books per year. And you are one of only a handful of authors who has made me cry and who has shocked and amazed and inspired me this much. Seriously, at the end of Monsters of Men I was shaking and my heart was pounding and I had tears in my eyes and everything! It was that incredible!

I love Todd and Viola! They are awesome and such compelling characters and so dedicated to each other, I really started to love them like they were real people.

And YOU, you are a total genius! Your writing has such originality, something which I dare to say a lot of authors lack these days. It's different, it's new, it's risky, it's raw, it's emotional, it's subtle, it's engrossing, it's haunting, it's amazing. I'm a writer myself and I hope that someday I can be as inspiring to other young writers as you are to me. :)

The entire Chaos Walking trilogy is astounding, compelling, heartbreaking, touching, uplifting, terrifying, and beautiful. By far one of the best series I have ever read in my entire life, and I know it's going to stick with me forever. I'm constantly recommending them to friends and so far I've gotten 3 other people obsessed ;)

Thank you so, so much.

-Brigid

I felt like I needed to thank you for Chaos Walking, although I just finished The Ask and the Answer (Litrally about ten minutes ago) I can tell this series shall have pushed my Harry Potter to the floor to make room for these delectable and heartbreaking novels (I can say I cried my eyes out during both of the books but spoilers are spoilers so I cannot say when). They inspire me to keep writing my own stories and become a writer as well respected and talented as you. So thank you so much, and I hope to settle my sharpened fangs in Monsters of Men very very soon.

Hi Patrick Ness!
I just had the strongest urge to thank you for 'Chaos Walking'!
I could NOT stop reading!
'The Knife of Never Letting Go' is amazing and still remains my little brother's favourite book!
You're extremely popular in my house, me and my brother and my dad are hooked, or were until we finished!
We discussed how on earth you could top it and then TADA! 'The Ask and The Answer' completely blew us all away!
My brother bought it the day it came out in hardback and just absorbed it, which is a good thing for me because it got to me faster!
I, again, just like with the Knife, couldn't put it down! I got so involved I was almost screaming at it!
And then 'Monsters of Men'
My brother kept saying "oh my god" just at the title, before it had even been released!
There are no words to describe how totally ace 'Monsters of Men' is!
I love it all! I cried so much!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I also want to say The Mayor is one of the best characters ever!
It's characters like that and authors like you that have inspired me to write!
That's enough exclamation marks from me!
Thank you again!
Molly, age 15

Hello!

I just got done reading The Knife of Never Letting Go and it was absolutly amazing! By the way is twixt an actual word? I've never heard it before but it kind of stuck with me and I kind of like it. I think i'll start using it, it's better than between.

Anyways, I can't wait for the sequel! I bought the knife of never letting go at barnes and noble (I usually go to borders, that was just a fluke) so now I HAVE to buy the next book. I can't just get it from the library (it's out right now, though, I checked) because I bought the first one! So I have to wait till I go to the city which might not be for a while and it's just horrible, waiting! And then I found out that the third book is out in everywhere else except North America! MORE WAITING! It doesn't come out for another THREE MONTHS! But anyways i'm going to make all my friends read it along with the Tomorrow series (Have you ever read that because it's also pretty amazing, I finished that series right before I started reading Kinfe of Never Letting Go) So yes, anyways, thank you for writing such a great book!... and series whenever I will be able to read it!

Brooke

p.s. I JUST bought Castle in the sky like a week ago with my sister. What a coincedence!(The movie where the robot is from, which i'm sure you knew but not everybody else, a fantastic movie by the way!)

Hi there,

I finished reading Monsters of Men about an hour ago and I just wanted to tell you how much I loved it, but I'm no where near as literate as you so I can't sum it up properly :p

But seriously, I started your trilogy when the knife of never letting go was published in England and whilst I'll admit I wasn't entralled by the first page I ended up loving the book to the extent I slept with it under my pillow for a while.

I wish that this wasn't the last book and I hope (want, NEED!) To read more of your books :) I love the idea of having a career as an author and I used to want to be like JK Rowling or Stephanie Meyer, simply because they were ridiculously famous. No I'd much rather be able to write with the quality that you do. You are definately my favourite author and writer of the -only- books that have made me cry.

Thank you so much for writing them!

I finished Monsters Of Men last night at midnight. I'm sad now. Very sad now.

I want more Chaos Walking. :(

But I really do love them, more than I can really say. They will be some of the VERY few books I can stand to re-read, and I do intend to re-read them.

I'm really sad that the series is over. I was wondering if you will ever consider doing a short sequel? Pretty please with anything and everything sugary on top? They are too good to just be over like that, three books is not enough! I think I speak for all your fans when I say that your every waking wish would be our command if you wrote another book for Chaos Walking. We would bow in your presence!

I need to know. [edited for spoilers, sorry] It's driving me mad!!!

Best of luck for the Carnegie Medal next week. I think without a doubt that Ask & The Answer is the best book of last 10 years... if not more...

I have just dried up the tears from reading the last 50 pages of Monsters of Men - what an end. I recently moved to New York from Dublin, Ireland & my friends posted me the book for my birthday last week. There was no way I was waiting til Sept. But I have no doubt the book will be well received Stateside upon its launch & I will be there to support you.

Thank you again for a brilliant series & best of luck with all your projects...

Dear Person Reading This,

For those of you randomly reading this, I will give you a warning - you might not get this. For all you reading this that are writers - Please, listen to what I have to say, it might be useful to you one day. To Mr. Ness - PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE!!! Hear me out. This is meant for you especially. Please, at the very least, try to listen to what I am saying.

Also, I might come across as a massive spastic snooty b*tch. In reality, I am a just a fourteen year old girl. Granted I am a fourteen year old who almost fails classes, because I'm busy reading. I'm that girl who thinks beyond her years (at the age of three I saw the word "cute" as discriminative. Which, in a way, it is. You don't go up to someone older than you and say "your cute!" No, you only say that to people who you think are dumb, you have power over, or you just can't think of anything else to say to. All of which ticked me off! Please tell me what kind of three year old occupies their time with thinking about that?) However, I care so much about this series, to be honest, I don't care if you all hate me for saying this, as long as Mr. Ness (and all authors and future authors in general) listen to what I have say. And if you already know this, then at least I said it, and it never has to be said again.

On another side note, (wow, I'm probably ticking you off already for rambling) just like when you write an essay for school and they ask you for text support, I have used real life situations in this. Please don't kill me for my personal opinions.

ABOUT THE AUDIOBOOK
There is a difference between memorizing a poem and reciting one. It is the same difference between reading a story and telling a story. In one, it is merely words on a page, being heard, rather than read. The other, is hearing the story come to life. Please, if they ever make an audio book out of The Knife of Never Letting Go (which they WILL, because it is amazing. If they don't, they are morons!), make sure the person can TELL the story, rather than just read it.

For example, Jim Dale can really tell a story. I don't care if you actually like the story or not - go listen to a story hes told. No matter what, when you listen to him, it is really hearing the story come to life. That is one of the reasons I like the Harry Potter audio books, not only are the books well written, but it is a genuine pleasure to hear the story in a whole new way.

For an anti-example, (no, that is not a word, thank you very much for pointing that out) take the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. I love it; it is one of my favorites. However, the audio books SUCKED. Go, take a moment to find an excerpt of it, and really listen to him. Yes, he probably pronounced all the words correctly, and all that crap, however, did you honestly ENJOY listening to that? Not the actual story, but what he said. Do you, honestly, ever want to hear that again? I mean, he's monotone, every guy that is older than Percy sounds like a Californian surfer moron (the stereotypical, there are exceptions) who's asking who for more dope, and EVERYONE SOUNDS THE SAME!!!!! He tried to do voices and failed miserably. I mean, if he couldn't do voices, at least change the inflection. But, nooooo. As a result, though I love the entire Percy Jackson series, with all my heart, I, with a BURNING PASSION, HATE THE AUDIOBOOKS!!!!! The reader has totally ruined it for me.

My point, Mr. Ness, is, PLEASE, I love the Chaos Walking Trilogy with that burning passion I have for great books. Don't ruin it by letting just anybody read it. These are AMAZING books, they deserve an amazing STORYTELLER. Don't let a reader ruin it for us, your avid audience.

P.S. Mr. Ness, a suggestion (just a suggestion, NOT an order). You might want to have two people tell The Knife of Never Letting Go. A guy, to tell pretty much all of it, since it is from Todd's perspective. However, a girl telling Viola's dialogue. That way, when you get to The Ask and The Answer, the listener knows what Viola sounds like before you even hear it from her perspective. So, it's not a guy telling the story from a girl's perspective or some random chick you're just meeting even though she's been in the series since book one.

ABOUT THE MOVIE
Before I even start, yes, they will want to make a movie out of this series, and if they dont, they are either (A) morons, or (B) unwilling to spoil a great book.

Story Time!!!
Once upon a time, there was a British woman. This woman got an idea and wrote a book. Then she got it published. It won several awards. A lot of people who read it, liked it. However, not a lot of people read it, because they hadnt heard of it. Then, an important American man got a hold of the book. His name was Steven Spielberg. Steven went to the woman and asked for the rights of the book to make a movie of it. This legendary director was asking a pretty much nobody author, to make a movie of her book. Do you know what she said? She said, No.

Class, do you why she said no? It was for a couple reasons. First of all, she dodged a trap. If she had given up all of the rights of the book to the director, he could have done anything he wanted with it. Many authors fall into this trap for many reasons, the main ones being, oh, they know more about movies than I, a lowly author, do. WELL GUESS WHAT?! Its your story, you wrote it, and I dont CARE if they know more about movies, NO ONE will EVER know YOUR story as well as YOU do!!!!!! Another common reason is, oh, well, no one else will want to make a movie of it, I better take this opportunity while it lasts. You know, if you genuinely believe in your story and you have fans that do too (even if it isnt a large fan base, but a loyal one), then it is very likely that you will get another offer, or you can try to bend the offer to your liking. (By the way authors, fan bases are like friends. Youd rather have several loyal friends than a ton of half-ass friends. But a ton of loyal friends is always the best =D.)

Second of all, she was British, her story was set in Britain, and she wanted, if a movie was made of her book, all the cast, to be British. That way the movie would, like the books, have a British flavor to them. So, she drew a line the sand, and turned the American Mr. Steven, who was planning on making an American movie, down.

A little while later, someone else offered to make movie out of her book. She negotiated the rights and ended up with, a British set, a British cast, and the rights to give a yes or no on the screenplay and pretty much everything else in the movie. She believed in her story. As a result, others believed in her story as well. And you know what, class, to this day, if you see a movie of one her books, yes, it might not be perfect, it might not follow the book exactly, and not every person is satisfied with it. However, if you compare it to other books that have been turned into movies lately, for example, Eargon, Percy Jackson and the Olympians The Lightning Thief, and Twilight, her books-turned-into-movies are great. Eragon had a screenplay that didnt follow the books plot, to a point that they never made a second movie of it. Percy Jackson, again, wasnt anywhere near the original plot, they made the movie so it was all about the special effects, and they made major changes, example - two twelve year olds were played by a eighteen year old and a twenty three year old. And Twilight, oh gosh, Twilight was a disaster. They turned it into a cheesy piece of crap; the screenplay SUCKED, as did the director, and wait, you cant really call what they did acting so I guess they just were doing something else, I dont know what.

This British woman, she stuck her ground, and today, if you ever see one of her books in film, though it might not be perfectly from the book, there is still a spark in you from seeing a beloved character and PLOT come to life. Those other movies I mentioned, they were made for the money. They changed the age appearance of the main character, so more teenage girls would think, oh, hes cute and go see the movie, making them more money. But you know what, because it was all about the money NOW, they dont realize that in roughly five years, to be honest no one will give a damn about those movies. However, people are still flock to see this womans books-into-movies and they, generally, dont have a problem seeing them again, and buying them, and watching them again. And again. And again. Actually her books are quite popular now. You might know her. This British womans name is J.K. ROWLING. She wrote this little series called HARRY POTTER.

Yes. I did use sarcasm.

So, to sum up get a story teller, not reader, the books are amazing, believe in your story and I will, along with many others, I am sure, and that you are given a choice between money now and not really ever again and something that might not make you a ton of money now, but over all the years of people truly appreciating your story (in whatever form it might be), that the amount will total up to much more. But - more importantly more people will read, listen, or watch your story come to life in their hearts and imagination.

Always Willing to Listen,
Lauren

P.S. Here is a quote for you to think about:

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice. If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice. You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill. I will choose the path thats clear, I will choose freewill. Rush, Freewill. The chorus to Freewill, Rush (a band) has written many good songs, I really recommend looking up the lyrics, because, their songs are all like this, because they, like me, made a choice, and yes it wont be easy, but nevertheless, we choose freewill.

Dear Mr. Ness,
I am a young adult librarian in the U.S. and you have quite a collective of dedicated fans here, not just among my teen library patrons but also the many people in my circle of 20-30somthing-year-old friends that I have pushed the Chaos Walking series on. I even got a friend on the U.K. side of the ocean to send me a copy of Monsters Of Men which is circulating black-market style at our library, because we simply could not wait til it is released here in October. (One teen's direct quote about The Ask and The Answer was that it was the first time a book had made him sit bolt upright in bed at 4 a.m. as he was reading from the excitement of it all!)
I believe that pretty much everyone should read your series, it is beautifully written and tackles such huge topics so engagingly. So I am doing my part to try to make it so!
Thank you for your work, a whole bunch of teens from Massachusetts agree, we can't put them down or stop thinking about these books!

Hey me again from Singapore. I bought Monsters of Men last week, and I really didn't expect to see it in Singapore so fast. I spent about 2 weeks to read it this time, because the last time I read the previous 2 books too fast. Not that that's bad, but if it's the last book, I really want to read everything word by word, spend each day after reading thinking and thinking about it. I think if that's the last book I can read about Todd and Viola, I really don't want their journey to end so fast in my head, because I think they would take longer than that. Then when I finish reading it, maybe I can feel how long they have been going through it. It made me cry very badly but it was the best book I ever read. And thank you, for writing such a great book and reading our comments. I know it's getting pretty long, but I read the book with the mayor feeling rather pained with a song by Radiohead- Fake plastic trees, and I think, the music(not the lyrics) sorta made me more erm..."Feel" the book. Then I played the song towards the end of the book. I'm not sure if others would feel the same way, but I thought... I really hope to write a book as good as yours, Bye!

Dear Patrick (and everyone else)

I just finished reading monsters of men and all through it I wanted to tell someone who kind of knew what was going on all about it (AKA my mum, dad, best friend, other best friend or any of my other friends) which I couldn't because they were all either reading it or waiting for me to finish reading it. The ending was really great but please make it sort of be like Star Wars. (for those of you who don't know, it started out as a trilogy and now there are six) I will know pass my copy of the book on to friends who are eagerly awaiting my finishing of the book (which I just did)

Reader and huge fan who is at a loss of books to read until August, when Mockingjay, the final book in the hunger games trilogy comes out, Lauren. LLL! MPL!

I just finished the second book today and can now say it is my second favorite book :]... I never wanted it to end.
Thank you for writting such great stories. Stories that make me laugh, cry, and leave me with anticipation and excitment with every turn of the page...

Katie said:

Patrick Ness,
Let me first say that I love to read. Like, a LOT. I'm pretty sure I've spent over £2000 on books in my lifetime, and read hundreds and hundreds of them. The thing with me and books is that, after reading so many, only the special ones stick with me. Of all the books I've read, I only remember the really good ones, and I only ever re-read the absolutely amazing ones. The ones that have qualified in that 'absolutely amazing' category include Harry Potter, His Dark Materials, The Twilight Saga and The Inheritance Cycle and, to be honest with you, not a lot else. I'm picky with my books and if I don't think a book is worth it, I'll never re-read it.
Your books?
I've read the Knife of Never Letting Go and The Ask and the Answer about six times each. I've just finished reading Monsters of Men for the second time even though I only got it last week. Your books need a whole new league of their own.
I find the Chaos Walking books really hard to get my head around. They're written with grammar spelling mistakes- which I normally hate. They're unbelievably violent- which I normally hate. They're set on another planet and include aliens- which is normally totally NOT my kind of book. On paper, these books should be my worst nightmare.
But they're not. They're special and amazing and incredible. The characters, although in such an alien scenario, are so believable in themselves that I find I sometimes forget that I'm reading a fictional book and think that these events actually happened. I can cry and laugh and gasp in shock at everything that happens to them, and I don't care, because I know that those books are something amazing. They're something revolutionary that have actually changed the way I see the world.
I can honestly say that these books have made me appreciate what I have in life. They've made me appreciate my family, my friends, my life, my home. Everything.
I'm sorry I'm babbling on so much. I only came on here to tell you one thing, and that is that, after reading your books, I've realised that even though the War going on on the New World is fictional, there is a real war going on here with real consequences and real disasters. So I've started giving £10 a month to a charity that helps those affected by war. It might sounds stupid that reading a few books has been what it takes to make me help, but I don't care, because there are people out there who have been affected by war just as much as Todd and Viola and the people of the New World have been.
So, after that nice little essay, I just want to say thank you from me for writing some excellent, thought provoking, life changing books. And thank you from those people who have been helped by my donations, because its you who made me aware.
Keep on writing, Patrick Ness. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person who has had their eyes opened.
Katie

I'm interested in character creation, and you made me love (almost) all of yours! The Chaos Walking books are some of my favourites, and if you write another (which would be good), I'd love to see where the characters are going.

Thanks for providing hours of amazing-ness.

When I was in college I had to review some literary magazines and I believe your story was in one of them. I cannot remember the name of the story and I have searched far and wide to find it. It was a short story and involved nabbing children that were poorly dressed and bored and giving then new clothes. I have been trying for years to find this story and have been unable to come across it. Please let me know the name and what literary magazine it was published in if you can. I really enjoyed that story.

Dear Patrick Ness.

I have just finished reading your latest book, Monsters of Men, and can I just say that it was probably one of the best books I have ever read. Every single page spoke to me in a way a book hasn't done in a long time, and considering the amount of books I read that's saying something.

I love the whole series of books because it plays on something that I have always been interested in, what if other people could read our thoughts. What is nothing was private? I think you captured it in a way I'd never thought about before. I always just thought about the privacy issue but you thought about the information overload as well.

I may only be fourteen but I have tried my own go at writing. I've written a draught of my first book and have loads of ideas going round in my head that I've been trying to get down on papar but its hard to put them into words and shape them into possible storylines.

I just wondered if you had any pointers. I know it may be a little impossible for me to get a book published now but I can't think of anything else I'd rather be than an author and if I can make young people read the way you do then I will have fulfilled my goal.

I just think that who better to write for a kid than a kid. Like I've already said I've already written my first book and I've written several story lines for others. I've got summaries and information and writing is all I seem to do at the moment. I've drawn on lots of my favourite authors: Horowitz, Rowling, Golding, Riordan and of course and I'm trying my best but its difficult to get anyone to take me seriously. Only really my Engligh Teacher and parents actually do.

Thanks for letting me talk to you, its difficult to get hold of any author who'll actually listen to you.

From Alex, 14 from Cambridge.

Sorry for another post so soon but I had a question for you.
What did you envision Mayor Prentiss to look like?

hello

we are just winding up our regular book group meeting for the evening and wanted to let you know that our book for this time was The Crash.

4 out of 5 of us thought it was brilliant, although one of us didn't actually realise there were rhinos in it (don't ask!)

I read it as a post apocalyptic story set on the west coast of the US, another saw the heat as coming from a red sun, whilst another book group member set it in Eastbourne.

We think you are a fantastic 'wordsmith' - incorporating 'suppurating and 'fully lactating' into any book makes it a winner with us.

One of our members has read your trilogy and we wonder how you decide which age group to write for - what do you need to do differently for adults as opposed to mid teens - was this a conscious decision or something that's just happened?

lovin your work!

I've recommended your books to all my friends and I am very happy the Ask and the Answer was shortlisted for the Carnegie medal 2010. Hey Mr. Ness,

Thanks for the welcome. As my co-producer told you we are thinking about making a full length movie but there are some issues with that. I'm hoping that the book does eventually get turned into a movie and so making our own version would just seem a little strange. But what I am trying to convince is making a trailer for "The Ask and The Answer". However we would need several more people involved and a lot of special effects. But I would greatly appreciate your input on any of our ideas.

Thanks,
Jack (co-producer of ZombieGrenadier)

Dear Mr. Ness,

I want to thank you for posting the link to the youtube trailer that my students made. I teach middle school reading in New York, and I'm so proud of my kids.

That trailer is a huge hit around our school. I am sure it will draw lots of new readers to your fantastic book.

This experience has been a wonderful way to reinforce what I am trying to show my kids, that there is a power in reading, sharing, communicating, and creating.

By sharing that youtube video, you have proved that the marriage between reading and technology can draw us deeper into new literary worlds.

Thank you so much for helping me to show my students that they have a voice, and it matters.

Can't wait to share all that you write with my students in the future.

Take Care,

Well he did NOT put your books down I purchased all 3 for his birthday & he has just now finished reading the final and I have to say he is pacing up and down & complaining! which by the looks of all of the above comments he is not alone in having these feelings upon finishing the books. So please you must tell us what you are working on now & when can we get our hands on it? For my son to not want to get on his computer because he was too engrossed in your story is absolutely wonderful. So please reply & tell me there is more coming our way. And can I just finish with a huge THANK YOU. I love authors you make my sons life so much more wonderful! He has Aspergers Syndrome & books are his escape! Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!:)

Hi Patrick,

An incredible end to what has to have been one of my favourite reading experiences of the last decade! And even the Mail liked it!

Twisting plot, complex themes that break away from the classic 'right' and 'wrong' ideology, breath-taking action (am I inadvertently repeating the blurb on the back of the book?) and, most importantly, some of my favourite characters ever! I love Todd and Viola and (edit alert) [edited, obviously] passing was devastating - still brings a tear to my eye today. But 1st place has to be reserved for Mayor Prentiss. The guy is like Hannibal Lecter, he's such an evil, remorseless genius. It's his search for redemption that kept me squirming: is he really becoming 'good'? Is he just biding his time? What does he really have planned? Can you believe a word he says? Such a dangerous character, but at times I felt myself rooting for him (if not liking him a little - deeply wrong, probably).

It's sad the trilogy's over. Any plans to tack a few more on to the end, in the style of Lian Hearn's Tales of the Otori trilogy, which ended up being 5 books at the last count?

Thank you for writing such entertaining books and I'm so pleased that they are getting the recoginition they deserve.

I have to mention that I went to my local bookshop everyday for about a week when MOM first came out and everytime it was sold out. I gave up and bought it online.
PLEASE bring out a fourth book, or even some sort of related book to chaos trilogy
I cried so much to all my friends who don't read themselves so couldn't understand how overwhelmed I was and spent hours trying to explain the brilliant plot. I think Todd and Violas characters are brilliant, and their relationship is beautiful and that the Mayor is hilarious. I also loved Wilf.

anyway the point is you really really have to make the book 4 novel just so we can all read some more! i can scratch out the word trilogy written on the side of the first 3..
seriously this book is like a drug, i expect youve probably ruined every other book i try to read now as its never gonna be the same as todd hewitt. so il stop rambling now and jus say a massive thank you for giving me the best books i ever got. :D much love (and seriously think about book4 yeah?) :) Becky

A couple of weeks ago I rushed out of my house to catch a coach to Oxford to take 43 Year 9 girls on a residential. As soon as I reached school I realised that I had left the book I was reading on my bedside table – the Children’s Book by A S Byatt, incidentally…

In a panic about how I was going to pass the hours waiting for the girls to fall asleep, I rushed up to one of our libraries, grabbed Tracey our librarian and demanded she recommend me a book to borrow. She pointed out that I would be better off going to our 6th form library for a more ‘adult’ read.

How glad am I that I had no time, because she thrust The Knife at me and warned me to ‘Not be put off by the talking dog…!’

I have just spent half term reading the rest of the trilogy instead of doing my work. As an English teacher I suppose it could be considered research or lesson preparation!

The other ‘Children’s Book’ lies unfinished next to my bed.

Do you sell posters of the books, because I only have this tiny one that I took from when you were in Easons in Dubliln. You obviously dont remember me and still wont now but I was the one who told you You sometimes make me hate men, still you wont.

As you said at Easons, I am also at peace with [again, edited for spoilers] all the same I would almost die with excitement if you brought out another book (which I know you could definitely be able to pull off because you have that power).

Those three books are the best books I have read in my entire life, although fifteen years isnt a long one, but they will always be my favourite as you have made a HUGE impact on my life in so many ways. Do you know how much power you have now! Not as much as the Mayor but I wouldnt be surprised if you got close, but a bit worried..

And Mr.Ness, if I was making a film of the books, I would let you have complete creative control over it and not have to listen to some lunatic producers ! I also heard you say You wouldnt be able to fit all three books into a two hour film , but no question about it, three films!

I know how sappy and pathetic I was, but you would not believe how much I cried when [more spoilers]. How could you Patrick! I couldnt see the words sometimes because of my welling tears! And the night before that I read that [and more again]!

Finally ending. You made my heart beat so fast I wish you could of felt it. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. You have taught me so much, saddened me, made me feel on top of the world, inspired me and even changed me. I guess we really are what we read.

Wow
This was an amazing book. I read monsters of men through the whole night and it is amazing the build up of characters. I was crying at the end (sad I know) because every loss in the book goes staight to my heart.
I love the twist of the plot and how Todd doesn't really know whose side he was on until the very end.
I wish that there was another book because I have never felt so connected to a book before and I'd read it just to get that sensation again.
If you haven't read it, be sure that you do because it is worth every page.
Keep it up Patrick.

Thanks for partnering with us to engage kids in reading and writing!
Looking forward to meeting you,

Hi Patrick

Don't know whether you remember but in a competition in February of last year you picked my story - Last One on the Ice, about a polar bear being captured - as the winner of the competition.

I recently finished Monsters of Men and can firmly say your trilogy is right up there with the most intelligent, immersive storytelling I've ever read, and I have read a lot! Bk 3 kept me up until 1.30am last night, and I genuinely found it difficult to focus on real life between chapters as I was worrying about your characters. And I cried at the end, and I never cry at books.

Thanks so much for picking the story that meant I had enough confidence to continue with my own writing; I'm engaging with a publisher about a short story anthology soon. What do you plan to write next?

Patrick,

Have just finished Monsters of Men, and am feeling quite drained. A perfect finale. If ever there was a book that defines the horrors of war, this is it. But hope is there as well, which is how it should be. Loved it! All the way through I was torn between reading as fast as I could, and going slowly to savour it - because I knew that as soon as I finished, I wouldn't have it to look forward to any more.
Thank you for a great trilogy

Hi Patrick,
I am currently reading Monsters of Men and really enjoying it. i have read your other two and thought them really innovative. Its so great to see new ideas as powerful as yours. After watching 'Up' by Disney, i noticed some similarities. Clearly your 'cassors' and talking dogs were too good for them not to steal. I hope they asked for them but they didnt do them as well as you anyway. Can't wait to finish Monsters of Men

You need to write another. I need to know what happens next. I actually won't stop thinking about it until I do. It's one of those books that never leave you.
I cried for about 3hours during the ending.

Your fan and bookworm, Abbie :)

Hey Ness! I finished Monsters Of Men and it's AMAZING!!! I read some other comments and they said that you should carry on with the series, I for one totally agree!!!
I've recommended the series to as many people as I can, saying it's better than The Harry Potter series, which in my view, totally is! I would ask lodes of good questions but I don't want to spoil it for others still reading it.
Keep on writing! (please!!!!!)

your series chaos walking has been the best three books i have ever read in my life.
PLEASE can you write one more?!?! or even two? i tried to read them as slow as possible so i can make them last. If you add more books to the series, that will be the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. PLEASE DO!
i doubt you can, but can you email your "fans?" if you can (hopefully), please tell me if there will be another book!

Just finished Monsters and have to say - brilliant, but I want more! Like many others, I want to read another installment about Todd, Viola, the Sky and the Spackle. Took me a while to get used to the Noise in book one but then couldn't put any of the three down. I work in a library and used it as a great excuse to promote young adult books - books for everyone!

Megan said:

I just want to say how amazing your books are. I have never read a series where I cared so much for the characters. You made them feel so real. It wasn't like other books where the main characters seem perfect and can never do wrong (i.e.Bella Swan)Todd and Viola made mistakes, they fought and loved, everything that makes them human. Thank you for a real series that had me feeling the same emotions as the characters. Please please please, write more to their story..even an extra chapter!!!!

Morgan said:

I have just finished reading "Monsters of Men" and I am completely awestruck. I read all 603 pages in little under 6 hours. Those 6 hours were a roller coaster ride of emotion and i feel physical drained, this book is amazing.

There are no other characters I have ever felt as strongly attached to as Todd and Viola and the ending of the third book in the trilogy is literally keeping me awake... To reiterate what many have already said the, complexities and ethical issues explored in your novels add another dimension to the series which already boast a gripping story and the idiosyncrasy of the structure and content of the novel ensures boredom is impossible.

Please continue to write, I look forward to reading your future work; (Please :)?)

Seriously, i read it in one very long day, i couldn't put it down. It was great to hear the different points of view in the story. I cried to near death at the end. I loved how fast paced the story was too. Nearly every few chapters you left us with a minor climax. I got nervous every time ;) It's such a shame to see such a great series come to the end. I really find out about what happens more *hint hint*

Anyway, it's awesome, your awesome, hopefully theres nothing too revealing in that paragraph, and thanks for all the hours of entertainment

Okay, I really, really do not know where to start.
First thing - I don't know whether to love you or hate you, Patrick, for taking me through such emotions and trauma and extreme sadness then hopeful happiness then everythingness then having my thoughts occupied nearly entirely for two weeks about Monsters of Men and having probably about 20 hours sleep since the book came out... But, no, of course I love you for it. How can I not?
You have taken me down a very rocky road. These books have major turns and bends then sudden twists. They have massive drops where I feel I'm going to fall... (fall right into New World, now wouldn't that be nice? - if it got me the chance to meet the real live Todd Hewitt, I don't think I could miss it). Then something else happens and I feel I'm slowly but surely climbing back up the road again. There's always that hope, while the seemingly never ending struggle of making it to the end, to peace. And do they ever make it? Well, I kind of have to make that up myself, don't I! I've had many dreams of how the story continues for me.
And although it's SO massively upsetting now they're over, after a year of waiting (that wasn't fun), I think you've made the right decision not to write any extra books linking on. It's good you know where to stop, that half the beauty of these books is your imagination and how the 'what happens next?' is down to yourself. I also love how you've not described the appearances of the characters practically at all. It's great to compare my versions of Todd and Viola with my friends' - oh yes, did I mention? Since I HAVE NOT STOPPED talking about them for the past year, I've got nearly 20 people I know onto them. Not just onto them, actually, but OBSESSED with them, like me. Including my 22 year old brother, and next to conquer is my 56 year old dad, haha. I really do think he'll love the comedy value you add to your books.
And if I'm not good enough friends with someone to go blurting on and on about the books to them, then I'll write quotes in their logbooks (our school daily planners) from Todd and Manchee and Viola, along with a little description.
And these 20 - nearly - people I've got obsessed is just within the last two months alone. Before that I sort of wanted to keep the stories to myself for a while, be the FIRST to read them because, I dunno, I sorta feel like I own the characters. Because I've started this whole little craze in our school, just by picking them up from the shelf at Waterstones, I feel like I own them? Crazy, shh. But Todd Hewitt is mine, hehe sorry girls.
I've read the Knife and Ask four times each (first time I read them both, I finished them within a day), but I'm not sure about the third. It took me two days, that was me savouring it and trying to read slowly. It took me through joy and horror at once, then obviously many many tears. So I'm unsure about whether I want to put myself through all that again xD And when I'd finished, at midnight exactly, I sat up in bed for the next 5 hours, literally, thiinking about everything that had happened. Then that week I had an important exam, counting for nearly all of a GCSE. Not good! I couldn't concentrate on it at all. But I definitely will read it again one day though. At the moment, however, all three books are lent out to various friends, who are constantly texting me saying "OMG! This just happened" and such. I love it :) I was on a 2 hour phone call with a friend - it cost me over a fiver, but it was so worth it - who was just finishing my copy of Monsters of Men a few days ago, and she had much the same reaction as me. And she then proceeded to email me about how much she loved them, and listing quotes from each individual character. One of our all time favourites: "Good poo, Todd."
Oh, good ol' Manchee.
And the Mayor, oh. my. god. He is the most fascinating, interesting, untrustworthy (but can you trust him at times? CAN you?) scary and unpredictable but so totally amazing character ever. Even though I love our heroes Todd and Viola more than ANYTHING, the Mayor will stick with me the longest, I think. And am I the only one who gets reminded an awful lot of Adolf Hitler when reading his parts? I've been studying Hitler, his rise to power, and his control over Germany, in history the past few months. And nearly everything about him reminds me of the Mayor. It's quite weird. His seeming unstoppable greed for power; his amazing ability to speak to and convince crowds; his fake smiles and promises then brutal lies as he turns his back on everything he's said; his untrustworthyness and unpredicatablility; then when coming to power, his restrictions and bans (like, EXACTLY THE SAME with the burnings of books - censorship); his false hopes with people, pretending he was going to make everything great again; his belief that men and women were different and should be separate; his willingness to fight, love of war; his greatness at ordering others and clever tactics; the way they are both mad, but know how to turn that into extreme intelligence; and even their... well, that would be spoilered out, I'm sure. But, the way Hitler - cough - didn't like it when it didn't go his way after the war. And the list could go on.

Jeez, I just realised how much I've written - sorry! And I could carry on for another five hours I'm sure. I'll stop soon though, I'm probably very much boring you or more likely you stopped reading ages ago.

Could you just answer one thing please? The only thing I was a little confused at was from the first book.
Todd was surprised at the Spackle bleeding red, yeah? And it said at one point 'The sky is as blue as fresh meat.' implying they bleed blue? (odd, but just adds to the AMAZINGNESS and strangeness and originality to this series). But I was confused when, at the end with Aaron, it said something along the lines of "There's Aaron's blood everywhere, and the red of it matches the red of my Noise." which says they bleed red? Sorry it's just been puzzling me, haha.

Chaos Walking is the best series that will ever be written. I could put all my money on it. I've read a great deal of books in my 15 years, and this is a million times better than all of them put together. I can't believe that anyone else can love Chaos Walking more than me. Sorry about my confusing road metaphor and great length of rambling but basically I just want to THANK YOU for writing books that deserve to be held higher than any other and should be read by everyone and anyone.

Here you come, indeed.

P.s. sorry about my informalness it's just that the more I get used to a website comment thing the less formal I get.
p.p.s. How could the mayor be so cruel [edited}?
He is unbelievably EVIL, how on earth could Todd trust him, he would prbably kill him and get it over with, now i am angry with Todd and the mayor, and also sad for Manchee and Davy... Never for Aaron!

So far I'm enjoying the newest book, I don't want to read it too fast though!
Me wanting to be a movie director when I'm older would really like these books to become film (though you'd want someone fantastic to create it who wouldn't make it horrible at all and then try to place everything possible inside!) I mean I've already decided how the first scene should be created!

I liked the adventurous part of the book. I just couldnt put the book down. I think that you could have made the book a bit more bright and happy instead of it being so dirty and everyone getting hurt. Thankyou Patrick for writing such a good book.

Thoroughly enjoyed The Knife & The Ask, and can't wait to read Monsters. At the end of The Ask, when [edited for spoilers], I was like how did I not see that coming! Your books always manage to keep me on edge, and then be taken aback by what happens next. Would love to see you stay true to that rumour of a movie back when you were in Geelong. Thoroughly enjoying your dystopian-action genre that you have created, and seriously hoping for a trilogy of movies.
Fingers crossed on that last bit, Eli.

Your books deserve nothing but the highest of praises. They have the most original storylines, lovable characters, and insanely good plot twists. They make you feel happy, sad, angry, worried and confused, and many more emotions, sometimes all at the same time! You become attached to the characters, and then when one of them dies, it feels like you have suffered a loss. The Chaos Walking books are the single best series of books I have ever read, and thats saying something. I am sad they are over, your writing talent makes you feel a bond with the tiniest character, but I am hoping for a stunning new book/trilogy/series, that can possibly exceed Chaos Walking, if that's even possible. Please don't disappoint! You have definitely gained a fan in me.
Now to go read them all again!

i just finished Monsters of Men yesterday (after buying it the day before) and it was incredible. worth every dollar. i am an avid reader, having read almost all of the local library's fantasy section and i have never actually gone out of my way to buy a book before (apart from harry potter 7, but everyone did that) and i knew as soon as i finished the Ask and the Answer that i would have to buy the next book. Monsters of Men was so intense, i found myself shaking as i turned the last pages. i would really like to see the series made into a movie, but i would hope that the storyline wasn't lightened up to make it suitable to a younger audience. also i would worry that the Noise wouldnt be done well.
i think its awesome that an author with so much talent can be so popular. keep up the good work

I LOVE your books. I read them for a book club, thinking I wasn't gonna like them because it sounded kind of artsy fartsy, but geez oh man, was I wrong! I forced my parents to order the second one on amazon and had them pay extra money to have it delivered in a week, and let me tell you, that was one of the hardest and slowest weeks of my 14 years! I gobbled the book up in two days (it would have been shorter if it wasn't for pesky school! : ) Then I found out I had to wait until September to get the last book! The one week I had to wait for the second book was hard enough! The Chaos Walking Trilogy has pushed Harry Potter off from being number one, and as HP has been there for the last four years, that's HUGE! I am, as of now, trying to convince my parents to go on vacation to England for the sole purpose of getting the third book early. They're not going for it : )

I just finished reading "Monsters of Men" and you made me sob like a baby. I won't say why, just in case some people haven't read it yet, but my God, that book is packed full of cliffhangers. The Chaos Walking trilogy is amazing. My aunt bought me the first two and I bought "Monsters of Men" myself. Best decision ever. I think the Chaos Walking series is the only book for teens now that doesn't involve either a) vampires, b) werewolves or c) Justin Bieber. It involves Spackle. Awesome Spackle.

Amazing series. Ireland tour? Pretty please?

Hello Patrick!

Reality:
I am from Venezuela, 35 years old. As you can read I am not a child and english is not my mother tongue. I apologize for my mistakes.

Background:
I have a big collection of teen fictions or young adult fictions or whatever people call them. I have read from A series of Unfortunate Events, all Tolkien books, Ink Heart -Spell and Death, all Narnias,The Roman Misteries, Northern Lights - Amber Spyglass - The Subtle Knife, The Graveyard book, The 39 clues, all the Spooks, The City of Ember, All Maria Mundis,Tesias, Eva Ibbotson books as The Star of Kazan, All Harry Potters, Alice in Wonderland, Treasure Island, Oliver Twist, and so on,... and well, I just finished YOUR BOOK: The Knife of never letting go. I bought it a week ago in the Dublin Airport.

The Fact:
I must say that all the books I have read have their on magic but I have never decided to get my computer to write to all of them, to all the authors that I think deserve a "congratulation". I just admired them. This is actually the first time I take the initiative.

The Reason:
Your book is really good in terms of creaitivity but better than that, your book is "a piece of art" in terms of writing. I have never read a book with such original style. Your short lines, one after another, full of meaning, able to express the feeling and the mental contradictions of a teenager. Your Total control of the pace and rhythm. Your "historical present" is amazing! It makes the reader feel. The meaning of the "noise" got to my mind not just because of its explanation. The way is written on the paper say more than that. The way you combined the words, the lines and the story is incredible.

The feelings:
The stabbing scene made my face screw up.
I had my own meditation with the cows passing by.
I cried with the last moment of the dog and cried so much that I had to close the book for a while.

To you:
You are an inspiration!
You broke the mould!
Thank you.

I have just finished reading Monsters of Men, and I have to say: great great job! The whole trilogy is utterly awe-inspiring and thought-provoking, and was a joy to read... Really not just another YA-fiction book.
I am an English teacher in Brussels (Belgium) teaching 14-17-year-olds. I am always on the look-out for great YA-fiction, and when I came across The Knife of Never Letting Go last year, I knew I was onto a winner. I decided to incorporate the book in one of my year 9 projects, and yes, it was an instant hit with all the kids who read it. Considering that English is not their first or even second language, getting them to read, let alone get involved in, an English book is usually somewhat of a challenge, but The Knife truly inspired them.

After finishing the 3rd part myself, I am also more than convinced to include the trilogy in some way or other in their curriculum for the next school year (esp. since I also only got positive feedback from the kids who read The Knife this year). The main reason for writing this comment, however, is to ask whether you are also planning to do a European (reading) tour, or whether you'd be interested in visiting schools in Europe?

Thanks in advance for answering!

Oh dear God. I just finished Monsters of Men and I'm feeling like I've just experienced a blast from a Spackle battle horn from two feet away. Thank you, Patrick, for one of the most amazing reading experiences of my life. I've read many books that kicked my butt in 43 years, but I'm not sure I've ever felt an author's fingers around my throat as tightly as I have felt yours. (Clean those fingernails, will ya?) You have done some really amazing things in Chaos Walking. You've created numerous purely heroic (and purely anti-heroic) characters without ever making them boring, which is a lot harder to do than some might imagine. You've created a story that's fresh and new, yet one that beautifully explores its timeless themes. You've pulled off something pretty extraordinary here, and I hope you're patting yourself on the back. I can't wait to see what you do next--you've won yourself a reader for life.

Love your work ALOT. And I hope to hear from you.

I hope you're happy. You made a little girl cry! Well, not so little. But STILL. You know when you're tired, and you read like, I don't know, the end of The Amber Spyglass, and you have to wipe away a little tear? Well, it wasn't like that. It was big, fat, boo hoo tears. Is that spoiler-y? I don't care.
It was BRILLIANT. I don't care for Jaqueline Wilson, and Micheal Morpurgo writes too much war, but your books stand out alone on how spectacular they are! Simply the best books on the teenage market. You've also manages to knock the Amber Spyglass off my top One list- Monsters of Men stands there, proud and gloating. And it looks fantasticly brilliant.

Last summer I went to my public library and I found the The Knife of Never Letting Go. It was with the pile of other books I was going to read. I read your book first and I could not put it down. I fell in love with the characters and the creative plot. None of the books I had in that pile compared to what I felt about your first book. I had to suffer until my library got the second book and I just finished it last week. I love how the ending is keep me anxious haha. I absolutely cannot wait until September! :D I've been keeping myself busy with Crash of Hennington and Topcis of Which I Know Nothing About.
You are an amazing writer. Keep up the good work!
Take care :)

Hi! I started your series two years ago and have reread them about five or six times each. They are amazing, really they are the perfect series. I started reading them to my little brother who usually reads shorter, easier novels that are focused on younger kids so I wasn't sure he would like them, but he made me read the knife of never letting go so much that we finished it in less than two days and he is already zooming away at the ask and the answer in school. Thank you for helping him realize his love for reading. (And mine too!) Anxiously waiting for the third. Good luck on your book tour.

Okay so i dragged Monsters Of Men out for two weeks due to a fear of letting these characters go but last night I couldn't contain myself any longer and had to finish it. I'm still reeling and emotionally drained but wow what an ending. I've never experienced something so sad and happy and exciting and cruel and sweet and just powerful in my life. I'd like to say thank you Mr Ness for giving me these characters and this world as it has impacted me greatly. I read Knife of Never Letting Go in October and couldn't believe the sheer awesomeness that lay in its pages. My only negative is that in my local bookshop your genius is labeled as Young Adult which unfortunately means a lot of people won't experience Chaos Walking due to pre conceived notions of what Young Adult entails. I've read many so called "adult" books and none speak so powerfully about War or Feminism or humanity or what it means to be a man or the strength of Love which Chaos Walking does so amazingly. Also Ben and Cillian's relationship is something, that as a young gay man, made me very grateful as you never made it an issue that they were a couple or used it as an emotional crutch to gain more drama. They just were what they were and in the New World that was nothing special. So once again thank you for creating these books and as a wannabe author I hope that someday I can write a novel with even a quarter of the intelligence and beauty that you have written. Also as much as I would love to say that Monsters of Men was a perfect ending and i got closure.....please don't let this be the end!

Finished The Knife of Never Letting Go yesterday (borrowed it from school) and was a bit amiss as to where to buy the next one. Then, lo and behold, the guy sitting next to me in English has just finished the Ask and the Answer. I've started to read it, but seeing as he's borrowed it as well I'm limited to reading it during English, though I don't really mind ;)
I've decided to buy Monsters of Men from WHSMITH, and I know at least 5 people in my year are hoping to borrow it. Bit upset the [edited, though it's not who you think] died as he was one of my favourite characters, but oh well. Looking forward to reading the next book, and cheers for all your hard work ;)

So, I bought Monsters of Men on Saturday, and now it's Wednesday and I've finally finished it. I don't know what to say other than that it was TRULY BRILLIANT. I finished it just before we were about to start an exam at school. I literally read the last word just as the teacher threw the paper down on my desk. I was thinking, 'How can I possibly do this after reading THAT?!' The whole book was brilliant and I can honestly say I've never read a book that has made me cry or grin or gasp more!
Can't wait for your next book!!

I went to WHSmith today, but they didn't have it; I searched for about half an hour then left. I only realised I could have asked a staff to help me find it but NO, my tiny little brain didn't think of the idea until I got home. Really bothers me. I'm surely gonna get it tomorrow, if they have it that is.

When I read that last sentence, I thought 'That was so unexpected', and I didn't want to put it down. Hey Patrick - just finished 'Monsters of Men' and I have to say, it was fantastic to see that complexity in the plot right up to the last page. If I have any complaints, it's that you had me 'by the neck' so to speak, from the first page to the last with the suspense - I think I barely breathed! I read the whole thing in a day. I'm now starting the shadowing scheme with a group of kids from my school, as well as beginning to teach 'Knife' to a grade 9 class, so I'm looking forward to the discussions that will ensue! Thanks:)

They are truley the best books in the world.
I wish I could write like you, You are such a unique writer with an amazing imagination! Everything I think of always ends up like the choas walking books, in one way or another, So I have to start over, No one can write as good as you!

I have really enjoyed you choas walking books and I really dont want them to end, Ive been wanting so long for the last one to come out and here it is!
And I know this sounds stupid but.. I really dont want the books to become into a film series, I just Have a feeling that they will, cause if they do my imagination of the great adventure will turn into someones elses. The good thing about a book is that everyone has there differnt imagination about it.. Im so glad I saw your amazing book "The knife of never letting go" in the store, because if I didnt I wouldnt of had the amazing exsperience of what the books held.
I have read "The knife of never letting go 5 times waiting for "The ask and the answer to come out and, Oh dear you dont wanna know hoe long ive been waiting for "Monsters of men to come out!"

Me again!
My book arrived yesterday, and I just couldn't wait to read it! So, from 4.30pm to 10pm, I was locked in my room, reading, and reading, and reading. I finished the book in 5 and a half hours. I was literally in tears at the end. A part of me knows that that's the perfect ending, that it's been [edited for spoilers, sorry], and that Todd and Viola's story has been told perfectly. But there is a small part of me that just hopes for another book, but that happens with every good series I read, so I think that the ending you wrote was brilliant, and it was completely unexpected. I was focussed on the book at all times, not once did it get boring or require me not to think anymore, and I thought that was brilliant.

On page [edited, don't want to give it away, do we?], my thought at that point mirrored Viola's exactly! I literally had such a big smile on my face at that point! Out of the three, this book is my favourite as it was so powerful, and brilliant all the way through. I can safely say that this book was the perfect conclusion to the series. I wanted to write so much more, but I know that I can't post spoilers here. But I will say this - I was pleasantly surprised when a certain character [edited, sorry, I'm a stickler on these things!] :)

Oh, and before I forget, ever since I read The Knife of Never Letting Go, there's been a song that I've listened to and it reminds me of Todd & Viola's story so much! The theme of hope too, of course. The song is The Cave by Mumford and Sons. Every time I hear that song, it just reminds me of the whole Chaos Walking series, and I'm pretty sure it always will.

I'll definitely keep checking on the website and dropping comments occasionally, as I must say that you are one of my favourite authors now, if not my favourite - something that I didn't think possible just a few months ago! So, I'll be keeping tabs of any visits you do around London in the future, and I'll try to come to some!!

Your sort-of-biggest fan,
Ghausia :)

I have just finished the final book, and wanted to express how much I enjoyed the Chaos Walking trilogy. I have seen your comments about writing for yourself -- I just wish you'd been writing when I was a teenager!

I picked up 'The Knife of Never Letting Go' during a library lesson (I teach 11-16 year olds in a South Wales school). From that moment, I was hooked. Complex characters that the reader sincerely believes in and cares about, issues that are universal without being patronising or tired, and a narrative style that is original and utterly absorbing... it is a real pleasure to be able to recommend your novels to my pupils. As well as the pupils, I've got my colleagues and even my mother reading them!!

I have laughed, sobbed and held my breath many times throughout the series. It clearly is a trilogy -- and I don't feel that there should be any more of them -- but I look forward to seeing what you have to offer next...
Thank you for sharing New World with us.

You had me from the titles! After a five hour bus/train trip I have just finished the Ask and the Answer and am so looking forward to the next one, truly edge of seat stuff.
I love the concepts that are discussed, the ideas of what it means to come of age, what it means to become a man or a woman. The tradegy of choices that are never a clear right or wrong but only the best of two wrongs. The nature of war and of humanity that leaves you thinking 'What if I was in that position, what would I do?' The too familiar flaws of humans are reflected here and we see so many issues that face us today as we tolerate the things that should not be tolerated and are intolerant to the things that are of no consequence. Timeless themes that are given an interesting format in the sci-fi genre, thank you and well done.

Oh patrick - how I am forever in your debt!
Let me say it now - the chaos walking series? Brilliant. Perfect. My favourite books in the world? YES
The last few years have been hectic education wise, and I wasn't able to find time to read. When I was, even though I enjoyed it, the books were fairly predictable and I couldn't sink my teeth into them and savour them like you're meant to.
And then you came along!!!
Thankyou SO much for writing these books and letting me into this world! The characters are so perfect, and so believable. I'm always surprised with where things go, how people react and the creativity and beauty you bring to your novels!! The best thing, I think, is that they're real - I can see and feel and taste characters when I read them. I haven't been able to do that in years.
You've made me cry and laugh so hard - thankyou so, so, so much! I honestly can't say it enough, you're amazing! You've made me love reading again - you've made me love writing again :)
You rock, man!

Hello Patrick,

Well, I finished Monsters of Men earlier today. Honestly, I'd been looking forward to it ever since I finished The Ask and the Answer (4 months ago) and waiting was not particularly enjoyable.

But was it worth it?

YES!

By far the best book in the series, great writing, amazing characters, WHAT AN ENDING! I didn't expect that!

So, basically, thank you so much for creating one of the greatest saga's I will ever read.

Zahra said:

third time i've commented, sorry!
i just wanted to ask a question about the cover of Monsters of Men. I was looking at it and was wondering what it was?? Is it an image of the New World, with the two moons and the world kinda on fire with war and stuff? (Sorry if i read too much into the fiiery colour of it, I was ina creative mood ;p)
thanks

ps I think Chaos Walking is EPIC, in case i didn't make that clear in my earlier comments!!

Zahra said:

Patrick Ness,
Wow. That is all I can say. Wow.
I don't know if my comment it still here, but i commented a few months back (i think) about the Knife of never letting go and the ask and the answer. I've just finished Monsters of Men, and i have to say it was utterly AWESOME. Honestly, i can't thank you enough for creating such an amazing and inspiring series. For the two days that I was reading it, monsters of men made me completely transported to Todd and Viola's battles and troubles. The entire book was wickeddd. I loved how you managed to develop Mayor Prentiss's character so well and so much that at one point I wasn't even sure who was the 'bad guy' anymore. Somewhere along the way when I was reading The Knife Of Never Letting Go last year, I fell in love with Todd, and with todd and viola together, and I still am!! I was so scared that Monsters of Men wouldn't live up to the amazingness of the other two books, but it was fantastic. It made me cry more than once! (I won't say when-spoilers!!) The last couple of pages were honestly some of the most beautiful things I have ever read, it was so touching!! Especially the very last two pages-I cried when I read them, not just because all of the last pages told todd and viola's story so beautifully, but because i knew this was where it ended with the books, that I wouldn't be able to read a new book about them both again. So, once again, THANK YOU IMMENSELY for such an amazing series. Todd and viola will actually stay with me forever!! i could babble on forever about your books, but i'll stop myself now! just wanted to let you know how many people you've touched with your writing, including me!
ps by the way, the early one morning, just as the sun was rising song is fantastic. I think the 'oh don't decieve me, oh never leave me' lines are entwined with todd and viola completely, 'cause i bet you they never will ever ever leave each other. I'm actually really depressed now that the series is over!!! grrr....i'll just have to read them all all over again! :)...and renew them at my school library else the librarian will actually kill me :s
Zahra (todd+viola forever and ever)

One of your biggest fans, Olivia.

The knife of never letting go and the ask and the answer are absolutly perfect books! Monsters of men is no exeption to this rule. I love the books and I love the characters... there is just one problem with the chaos walking series- THERE ARE ONLY THREE!!!!!!!!!! Please right some more, and make them longer the knife of never letting go only lasted me one day!!
I would just like to add that I, and I think this goes for a lot of people, would be waiting outside the bookshop at the crack of dawn to get it!!!!

SO PLEASE WRITE SOME MORE!!!!!!

Thank you. Thank you so much for making me laugh cry, and just feel so much. I have read books 1 and 2, and they are just the best books I have read in my entire life (that's 13 years). I can't wait to get Monsters of Men.

Also, is there any possibility of a film? That would just be amazing!

I have just ordered my copy of Monsters of Men from Amazon, and I can't wait for it to arrive! I might just pop to WHSmith and read the first few pages while I'm waiting because I desperately want to read it - I've been waiting for months and I know that this book will definitely be worth the wait! I've read some amazing reviews online, and if it is anything like TKONLG or TAATA, expect a comment from me about 6 hours after it arrives, telling you how much I loved it.

I'm taking part in the Carnegie Shortlist this year, and I took part in the Longlist last year. I'm currently typing a review for The Ask and The Answer, which is extremely positive as I have no criticism for that book, and I really hope it wins! I shouldn't really have decided my favourite yet as it was the first book that I had read off the shortlist. But I'll let you know if you have my vote once I've finished. I'm currently reading Nation, and so far you have beaten it. :)

Hey Patrick Ness,

I think the fast paced Chaos Walking Series is absolutely brilliant! It is so different in writing style and plot, and has powerful emotion and meaning in it... I have not read anything like it.

The local book store lady said that this series was for boys, but I don't agree. Luckily I didn't listen or else I would have denied myself one of my favorite series.

Thanks heaps and I can't wait for Monsters of Men!

My favorite character is Manchee (tsk tsk).

Hope I can manage to get to Easons in Dublin on the 13th and get you to sign a couple of copies of MOM. Well done, you, and continued success and congratulations!

Mr Ness, as a school librarian trying to enthuse teenage boys with a love of reading (not an easy task)I would just like to thank you for making my job easier.
It has helped with both 'The Knife of Never Letting Go' and 'The Ask and the Answer' being shortlisted for the Carnegie medal as we have been a shadowing school for 5 years now. We voted overwhelmingly for you to win last year and although we were disappointed we are glad of all the recognition you have received.
It will be difficult for us to concentrate on this years Carnegie shortlist now that we know that the long awaited 'Monsters of Men' is on the shelves. I will be hurrying to the shops at the weekend in order to read it and catalogue it ready for my students to borrow it on Tuesday.
Once again thank you for writing some of the best books I have ever read and making my job so enjoyable.

I've just finished 'The Ask and the Answer' in one monster session and I have to say that this book will stay with me for a very long time. As an English teacher I always search for literature of complexity that challenges and engages but doesn't patronise. This novel does it. The seemingly simple writing style is an adept device for delivering the multi-layered and sophisticated themes that the book encompasses. Thank you for a truly memorable work.

Just wanted to say I've already read the first 50 or so pages of Monsters and I love it already! It begins with such a gripping action scene! (Oops, I won't give too much away to people!) Its supposed to be released on the 3rd but I got mine a bit earlier and was soooo happy when I received it! I'm also very interested in reading your next novel!

My friend recommended 'The Knife of Never Letting Go' to me and I LOVED it! I love reading and I read all the time, but this was one of the best books I have read for a very long time. I brought 'Monsters of Men' very recently and was really happy that [edited for spoilers, sorry]. Two of my sisters have also read them and they really enjoyed them too. My sister Freya normally doesn't like books which feature depressing events, like war and deaths, but she was gripped by these. She finished 'Monsters of Men' a few days ago and has been raving about it ever since. Thank you very much for writing such amazing books!

Book.
In the post.
On its way, winging along, sitting in the post office, letterbox letterbox.
Not hurrying up, just to get on my nerves.

(Also I think these releases are timed on purpose to coincide with exams. Where was I this time last year? Knife of Never Letting Go, English Lit exam. This year? Monsters of Men, (revision for) English Lit exam. Someone is telling me something.)

(Okay so it's a bit earlier this year. No, that's a lie, my exams are later I think.)

(Whatever. It's not like I'm not going to go ahead and read it anyway, who needs qualifications?)

(Plus my book club would screw at me if I didn't.)

And that's an example of bad punctuation. Do I have anything else to say? Not really. Unless you have contacts in the postal service who can hurry my delivery along.

I just want you to know that I may be your biggest fan EVER. I've never commented before, but only because my computer used to be so temperamental that when you switched it on it starts flashing and squeaking. But it's been fixed now and here I am!!! I read The Knife Of Never Letting Go about 2 months before it was shortlisted by Carnegie. So I read (and ADORED) your books before they became famous. I'm from the same school as Rachel from the top of the page, actually we happen to be BFFEs, and I am reading Monsters Of Men RIGHT NOW, like, AS I TYPE, and it is STUNNING. Where do you get your ideas???? I love this series sooo much that when I finished TKONLG I practically CRIED because I knew only 2 books were following it. Anyway you're probably bored by now so I'll stop writing and get back to MOM!!!!! Bye!
P.S There were enough books for all of us Rach so you are telling A FIB.

I came across your books one day while wandering throught he school library. The title (The Knife of Never Letting Go) grabbed my attention so I checked it out. I read the entire book that night, instead of doing homework. But who can blame me? The book was amazing!!! Of course, the next day, I went back and checked out your next book. Have to admit I am a little sad the next book won't be out until Septemeber over here in the USA. Your writing style is amazing and you bring something fresh to the page and to literature, a freshness, that as a reader, is hard to come across but as welcoming as a fresh breeze on a hot summer day. I have always found it hard to read big books before because I have always lost interest but I got given the knife of never letting go as an English assignment and I fort ow no a big book, but I have stayed hooked and I'm on page 265 were they've just got pat the herds of the big cattle singing hear but I've so still a good adventure to go.I must say your writing skills is outstanding, I mean some little spelling mistakes here and there but we are all human and I've already asked to get the next of your books (the ask and the answer) and I must say you have done an amazing job of portraying your characters throw out the book and I propose to you about making the first novel(the knife of never letting go)into a movie e.g. maybe a manger movie or one with real children acting as Todd and viola but if you do keep to the lines of the book and not do like other movie maker's have done in the past and go off the books story line. OK :) Your book showed so much emotion and it made me feel happy sad and angry in some parts you have a real talent. And thank you for reading I bet your legendary books will live long past my time so always stay in comfort that you will live on even past death its very self.

We were all devastated to learn from Walker Books this morning that we would have to wait an additional 48 hours, May 3rd, to purchase Monsters of Men. Personally, I'd already notified close friends and relatives that I would be unavailable on May 1st - that I had an appointment with a book! Ah well - I learned when I was little that that the best things are worth waiting for. I know I won't be disappointed but I can't imagine how you're going to follow up the series...
Your books have enthused many otherwise non-enthusiastic readers - many thanks from a school librarian :)

I also saw on your journal that you met with Jack Heath while you were here in Australia. I hope you enjoyed meeting him, he's a lovely guy. I'm also friends with him, and have played in the same community orchestra as him for 6 years. I would have loved to have gone to meet you during your stay here, but couldn't get up to Sydney on the right day. Hopefully in the future you shall decide to return to our wonderful country.

Until that time, I shall enjoy your books and I hope there are plenty more to come (though I will still always love the chaos walking series - Todd and Viola all the way!!)

Hey,

I stayed up until 12am last night finishing The Ask And The Answer. I was checking them out from my schools library and am going to order them today. I have to have them and read them again! Thank you so much for these books! The Knife Of Never Letting Go was the first book I had read in months because I could not find one that I really enjoyed. You're an amazing writer. You should seriously consider turning these books into movies, it would be great, and I would be first in line at the movies!!! :)

When i came across the first two books of the trilogy, i was dumbfounded from the first sentance to the last. I had to read the last part again to make sure that it really was the end of book two. when i was sure... i was like 'NOOOOOOOO!!!' and put the books aside to leap for the internet just to see when the third book came out ( You are an amazingly talanted writer and have an imagination that i am jealous of. It made me cry.
(Shut up)

Read page 350 of the first book = NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Read page 412 of the first book = omg. awwww!! :D
Read page 420 of the first book = ARGH!!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!
Read page 429 of the first book = NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Read page 479 of the first book = NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! (IN TEARS)

Conclusion: I am crazy.

So now there's only a matter of time before 'Monsters of Men' comes out!!! Dude, it had better make me cry and laugh and scream and fall off my chair because i've been on the edge of my seat just as much as the last two, though i don't doubt you need the encouragement from me. Haha.

...

Whatever you do.... don't kill Todd or Viola.
(Please)
(Oh, god. Please)

Also, can you do a tour in the uk sometime? That'd be so incredible i have to turn away from the computer a minute to stifle a strange and weird noise that sounds something between an excited scream and an overjoyed laugh.

...

Okay.
It's all good.

Hello! I am sixteen, and used to be an extremely prolific reader until I read some... shallow books that broke my heart (and not in a good way).
I stopped reading for ages, then my friend gave me the Knife of Never Letting go, and my god. I don't think I have ever cried so much in a book. Same with the Ask and the Answer. Your stories inspire so much feeling in me, and you make me love (or hate) your characters so. You are by far my favourite author, and the Chaos Walking is my favourite series, I so can't wait to read Monsters of Men (They don't have it at any libraries or anything here yet D:).
I'm actually scared of reading it, because I know once again I'll be stuck, not being able to put a brilliant book down, and I'll be sobbing my little heart out at every twist and turn.
I am an aspiring author and hope that one day I can write a book that inspires as much feeling as yours.
C: Just wanted to say I love your books, and that I am pretty much dying, not being able to read Monsters of Men.

(P.S. I love in the books when there are the extra thoughts in the brackets, that adds an extra tingle!)

Hello Mr.Ness! You probably don't remember me, but I posted a comment on January 2nd, I finished THE ASK AND THE ANSWER for quite some time now. I live in Canada, so I must wait until September 28th to get MONSTERS OF MEN, I just can't wait I've been waiting over three months for this book and I still have to wait for another six months! I've been trying to occupy my time with other good books, but your books are still #1 in my "Favorite Books Bookshelf", I now finished an interesting book called : "The Land", it's an excellent book, but it does not meet your excellent books!

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK MR.NESS!!!
Haemeen

Ps: I wrote this in the last message (on January second), but I must repeat this once more, my Mom and I stood exactly where you were standing, un der the big robot, at the "TOTORO museum" ( for those who don't know what TOTORO is, it is an Japanese animated movie that was quite a hit) in Tokyo.

your books have to be some of the best i've ever read. your characters are perfect and seem so real and i'm always on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens.i've gotta say though, you must really love cliffhanger endings because both chaos books have one.i met you at the perth writers festival and have ever since then tried to remember your 3 tips for writing, i usally have a better memory than that.

Dear Patrick, I have just finished your first two books in the Chaos Walking trilogy and was desperate to find out if and when the third would be available - thank goodness for this website and the knowledge that I won't have to wait long - I have to find out what happens to Todd and Viola! I loved your original ideas and writing style - good fiction is so hard to find that when I find a book that is impossible to put down I want to shout it from the rooftops! Any thoughts for making the books into films - they would make great movies?

Woah... I recieved The Knife Of Never Letting Go as a gift on Thursday last. On Saturday, my mum was convinced into forking out 9 euros (how I love my local Add-two-euro-cos-we're-Irish-and-independent-bookshop) for the second novel in the series. I shouldn't have, because I should not have been thinking about Todd and Viola during Gaelic football, or Maths, English or while talking to my friend Jessie. You have penned a masterpeice that will not be forgotten Easily.

Dear Patrick,

I love your books! You made me cry several times and on every page you can find some feeling, which is just brilliant. I read each book three times and it thrilled me every time. The books even changed my mood what is incredible because none of the books I read before did this.
I can`t wait for book three, though it may be difficult to get it in japan, where I live.
I hope my english is okay.

Hey Patrick,
Your books are amazing. I read 'The Knife of Never Letting Go' on Saturday and it is awesome! I cried so hard when Aaran killed a certain person on the bank of a river, and I haven't cried from reading a book since I was seven and read 'The Snow Goose.' I loved it so much and you had such a good cliffhanger that I read 'The Ask and the Answer' on the Sunday. Once again I cried like a baby when MAYOR (eff him, and I'm saying the actual eff word) Prenttiss killed a certain character in the church. I absolutely love Davy Prentiss and wished for great things for him because I know what its like trying to live up to your parents expectations.
By the way I hope Aaron goes to hell, where he belongs, I don't tend to hate book characters but it came naturally with him.
Thanks for a wonderful thought provoking book trilogy and it had better be a happy ending or your paying for my psychiatrist! lol

I really enjoyed reading your books!! Especially 'The Ask and the Answer'. They are so exciting but heart breaking too in the Chaos Walking trilogy every time Viola and Todd split up!! I desperately hope that nothing happens to either of them in the third book and I am struggling to wait for it to be released!!!!

1 more month! Please keep writing more books like this one!! I am not a very consistent reader but this series has made me very enthused about reading!

I read the review in Waterstone.com. There was rarely any information that was...like, whoa!! You should ask all reviewers to have at least a whole page. That's enough to describe an awesome book, right? And are you suuuurre you can't make them publish it in the U.S. any faster?? I've read the first two three times each; I almost have the plotline memorized. Most authors should have something like this, don't you agree? Readers should be a priority to a writer. Thank you for taking the time to read our comments. Is there anything in works right now or the near future?

Hey Patrick

Oh. My. God. Your books are so good, it's crazy. I can officially say Chaos Walking is the best series of books I've ever read.
How do you manage to come up with all the twists and cliffhangers, and get everything to tie together so well?
I swear after every chapter I am so shocked and eager to read the next page I end up spending the whole night awake with my eyes glued to the page.
I try to start writing a book, and I get so far (usually about two pages, it's pathetic) and then I get stuck and can't come up with anything else to write.
Well, I wish I could write like you, that's for sure!
How do you do it? It's incredible.
Can't wait for the next book, May's too far away, arghh!
You're a truly amazing writer.

well, i hope you read this comment first of all! a friend of mine recommended the knife of never letting go to me last year, and as soon i read it, i actually went to my school library (which involves climbing up two flights of very steep stairs!!) to take out the ask and the answer, which i read in one day. i have them both at home now for myself!! im a little obsessive over them--for example, i only let CERTAIN PEOPLE borrow them, and they hav to b up for inspection afterwards!! (weird, i know) anyway, i just wanted u to know how amazing i find this series (TODD+VIOLA 4EVER!!) i re-read them again a couple of days ago, and im tellin you, in the knife of never letting go, [edited] never fails to make me cry, as with davy prentiss (ESPECIALLY with davy prentiss bless him)
thanks so much for a great series!!! you rock! :)

Mr. Ness -

As a mother, I wanted to let you know how awesome you are. You see, my 16 y/o son brings home this book, The Knife of Never Letting Go, from his school library. He reads it in less than 3 days and then brings it to me. He says, "Mom, you HAVE to read this book. Look at the first sentence!"

So now, I am in the middle of this book and I am hooked as well. My son has started the 2nd one and I can't wait to get my hands on it, as well.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that it takes a truly awesome writer to not only capture the imaginations of kids as you have done but to entertain the parents, too.

Oh, and I just thought you might want to know that I did a book report on The Knife of Never Letting Go for school. (I got an A+!) We had to bring in props from the book we were reading, which was hard, because you can't exactly bring a knife to school. But I did make a poster-sized cover of the first book, and if I may say so myself, it looks pretty ruddy awesome.
Congratulations on your successes and thanks so much for the fantastic reads. :)

I didn't realise how good your book, 'the Knife of never letting go', was until [edited for spoilers, sorry] and you made me cry! The way you explained the tumultuous (thats very likely to be spelt wrong) emotions running through Tod was beautiful and you made it all seem really real. Your style of writing is enthralling and really opaque, so you can never guess whats going to happen next. Also, in the second book of this trilogy I loved the way you built up a relationship between Tod and Davy. You turned Davy from the cruel boy you first described to a fallible human and I thought this made him a really 3D character. I love your books, can't wait for 'Monsters of Men' in May!

"I am the Circle and the Circle is Me" said:

Hi Patrick...
I just wanted to say how much I loved your books. I read The Knife of Never Letting Go and The Ask And The Answer, and I'm trying to find the 3rd book. I loved the whole plot with the Noise, and found it really interesting how layered and complex you made it. I have never seen that before in a book about "mind-reading", it always seems so easy to read minds. But what I liked about Noise was that it was unpredictable, complicated, and the characters seemed unable to control it. (Except, of course, for President Prentiss in The Ask and the Answer)
The characters seemed very real too. I found myself not only sympathizing with Todd, but also with Aaron and President Prentiss and especially Davy... poor Davy who I fell in love with, and the Spackle...
Anyway, I just want to say how amazing your books are. Your writing is an inspiration to me and I look forward to reading more of your work!

I thank you so much for writing it, you really inspire me. I got really addicted to it, making up more romance and problems for Todd and Viola... Is there a way of giving me tips on what gave you the idea and tips on how to write a magnificent book like that!
Your AMAZING
Best Wishes in your 3rd book.

Hey Patrick. I have commented before on how amazing I think 'The Knife of Never Letting Go,' is, and how, as a teacher, I'd like to develop a unit plan to use it in a Year 9 classroom. We are currently experiencing some censorship issues with the few curse words in the book, and as such, I must find evidence that other book groups and schools are using it (I know, I know! It's been awarded everything from here to Mars, but apparently I need to know other teachers are allowing it). I can recall you mentioning a scheme of work being posted somewhere on it, but can't find it.
Have you heard at all from any schools teaching the text?

Your books were recommended to me by a YA librarian from New Zealand and it took a while to get to them under the multitudes of TBR's that stack up on the bookshelves. But, after having literally DEVOURED the first two Chaos Walking books in under a day, I'm quite eager to tell you THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!! I'm so upset I didn't read them straight away! What a stunning and breath-taking series you've created! It has been many, many years since I've read a YA series this original and powerful (and I read an extraordinary amount of everything).

Thank you for your imagination and passion to turn words into such an excellent story!

Can't wait for 'Monsters of Men'. May not currently be in the book trade but still reading my kid and teen books - I'm addicted!
